Thanks Klaus for the video. Yes black currant is easy to root if you take soft cuttings. My black currant bushes is over 40 years old, and still is producing well, but I always cut back the older stems in february. Enjoy your weekend.

CB's Greenhouse and Garden I’m not surprised you haven’t heard of black currents in the States, at one time they were completely banned in the States because they are an alternate host of White Pine Blister Rust! This is good to know. I just bought my first black currant plant a few days ago. Just south of Canadian border in Washington state. I bought some Ribenna juice and made a drink. It was pretty good. My grandmother had a currant bush in Port Angeles in the 1960's. Are the berries too tart to eat fresh?
@WhatWeDoChannel
Жыл бұрын
Well they are quite tart, I think because they are full of vitamin C. My wife and I always pick and eat a few when we walk by the ripe berries. They are way more of a superfood than blueberries 🫐! You can certainly eat a few ripe ones! They make to most fantastic jam or jelly! I have made them into wine in the past too. In France they make them into the famous liquor called Cassis, they often mix Cassis with white wine or Champagne for a drink called Kir Royale.

@WhatWeDoChannel

Two Turtle Gardens At one time I grew a load of red currents! They make wonderful jelly and of course I made them into wine too. Goose berries are in the same family and make awesome jams, it can be really painful picking the thorny ones though! Black currents are incredibly good for you, lots of vitamin C and other anti oxidants, they sell them in Europe as a health supplement! I think black currants are even healthier than blueberries, a true superfood. Klaus

A little dirt never hurt I think you would like black currents, they have about 10x the flavour of red currents! They are a huge crop in England and Europe! They make the famous French liqueur Cassis and the popular English drink called Ribena! They are even better for you than blueberries, full of vitamin C! Klaus

Great advise and love the idea of blackcurrant wine, yum. Is it OK to pot in large pot and put into a large victorian greenhouse, I just built my 5x3m victorian style greenhouse and did a video on it, I also just got a father's day present, my very first blackcurrant plant. Any advise on growing in a greenhouse would be great cheers..

Backyard Homestead Well they grow all across Europe from the colder parts to the temperate. I’m originally from England where we are mad for our black currents and Gooseberries (Ribes family). They grow well across Canada and down into the States, I just don’t know how far south they go. A lot of Americans have never heard of them because at one time they were banned for being an alternate host of White Pine Blister Rust, they only survived because some settlers hid bushes when the government men came looking for them!

Good video, thanks. I just bought a black currant berry bush (H: 1m), planted and surrounded the roots with good compost in a sunny place in the yard. A few days of a mixture of rain/sun and some of the leaves are starting to yellow and curl. Any suggestions on why and how to combat this?
@WhatWeDoChannel
4 жыл бұрын
meljon It probably just needs a little time to get settled in its new home! Please check the underside of the leaves to make sure there aren’t any aphids hurting your plant! Have you grown something else in that compost, there has been a problem creeping into some commercial compost from a persistent herbicide used on pasture land!? The first black current I ever purchased (about 40 years ago) came with a virus, it never did well and everything I propagated from it didn’t do well either! One last thing, very often nursery purchased Blackcurrants are started from old wood and will never do really well but you can start healthy vibrant bushes from their new wood! Klaus

@@WhatWeDoChannel You were right. On the underside of just one leaf I found an infestation of green aphids and a lot of little black fly like critters. Do you recommend getting some lady bugs to combat aphids? Thanks again Klaus.

meljon I’m never happy in the spring until I see lady bugs on my black currents! My observation is that ladybugs 🐞 work better in the long term than nasty pesticides! I would wait a bit and see if the ladybugs turn up on their own, they always do in my garden.
