Thanks for actually showing the lamps in the dark. Everybody else seems to call a review playing with it at their desk.

Perfect for me for summer thru-hikes, super light and light spare batteries too. It's bright enough to make or break camp. I barely use my headtorch in the summer months though as tend to get in sleeping bag as soon as dark and up again when light. Handy torch for the rare occasion I need some light without weight restriction.

I have a question. I bought a petzl e light after watching this video. The e light was very loose from the fixed axis, so if you turn your head strongly, the flash moved together, which was not good. Did you have a similar experience?

I don't have a similar experience, i actually run with the Petzl e-light. It's possible you might have a defective unit. Although I agree, the the joint is not the most secure and may not stay in place.

Thanks! The cost of Boston hotel rooms makes it less exciting, though.

Great review. I own that Petzl, and mine bought in 2021 doesn’t flicker when battery low. I will say, I adore the little red plastic case for that light, and considered the BD light but I think it doesn’t have a case at all, which is a bummer. Thanks again

Good to hear that your Petzl doesn't flicker. Just might be the older model I have. You're right, I don't think the BD light has a case but it does have a more durable casing.

Thank you for this helpful video! However, one of the things that interests me most is the difference in the beam pattern since both these lights don't have proper reflectors and / or TIR-lenses? I used the first version of the e+lite and found it very annoying that so much of the light ended up in my face since the beam was much wider than the human field of vision... can you say anything about this comparing the two lamps?`

Thanks for the comment. I'll be honest, if you are asking these kinds of technical questions about this head lamp, this head lamp probably isn't for you. It's a very basic head lamp with a flood pattern. The e+lite is a bit brighter in the high mode.

I wanted to get this Black Diamond for an edc headlamp but I hate the batteries it’s takes. No one likes watch batteries. If they’re going to use them they should have made it usb rechargeable. Also since it a so called emergency light having something portable battery rechargeable and folding solar panel hiker use rechargeable would have been a lot better. I’m going to have to pass on this one unfortunately. It could have been a great product but I don’t think they’re going to sell very many and this will be discontinued fast due to the crappy non rechargeable watch batteries.

I mean, the point of these emergency head lamps is something you can store or carry for up to 10 years without having to worry about the batteries losing charge. Typical batteries or rechargeable don't hold their charge or will corrode while in the device itself. If you are looking for a small, rechargeable head lamp for EDC, the Nitecore NU series and Petzl Bindi are hard to beat.

Both of these are really ideal emergency headlamps for rock climbers, among other outdoor enthusiasts. It is far too easy to get held up while climbing only to find yourself in the dark before you've made it back to the car or even back down onto flat ground. These are excellent choices to carry in your chalk bag (if you buy one with a pocket) so you'll always have a light handy, even if you didn't bring a pack along or its simply down at the bottom of the climb and thus out of reach. Normally I would say that's a pretty niche use for a product, but considering that Black Diamond is a climbing gear company its squarely in line with the needs of the bulk of their customer base.

My attention span is sadly not 20 minutes long for a comparison of two headlamps.
