Alonzo “Lonnie” Clayton was an American jockey in Thorougbread horse racing. Clayton holds the record as the youngest jockey to ever win the Kentucky Derby in 1892. He was just 15 years old. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 27, 1876 but left home at age 12 to follow his brother into the riding profession. At age 14, he moved to New Jersey where he began his professional riding career and immediately won races. Clayton also earned victories at Champagne Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Churchill Downs, and Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Clayton died at the age of 40 on March 17, 1917, of chronic pulmonary tuberculosis. Alonzo Clayton’s accomplishments in horse racing earned him induction into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
