@NoblenessDee, he couldn't comment if comments are disabled. Hence, my first reply. And, yet, he commented "comments: disabled". With all of the negative comments in here, it is surprising that the comments aren't in fact disabled.

After reading the lyrics I actually quite like the song. It's about making a difference in the world and looking at it like a "retarded" person would. Considering that the term was still heavily acceptable at that time I don't see too much to be offended by, I'm not going to get offended by people using a term that, at the time, wasn't considered overly offensive. They changed it later to "Get It Started" in the 2004 re-release because that's when western society began to developmental disabilities seriously. Some of the lyrics mock people who make fun of disabilities or mental illnesses. So so the song's honestly a celebration of our differences that actively mocks those that make fun of us. I have autism by the way.

Millions of mentally disabled people commit self-harm or worse each day over the mere existence of the R word. Nobody even calls them that word and they still do it anyway. It's THAT hurtful. @v0rtexbeater

@@sebastiansprucer7609 if you seriously self harm because of a simple word then you never experienced any kind of real hardship in your life and are probably so privileged that you think someone making fun of you is akin to abuse. @@v0rtexbeater So basically, you don't care that millions of mentally disabled people, some even under the same spectrum as yours, even attempted suicide because hundreds of insensitive minds casually threw that awful slur around expecting them to just tolerate it as if it's not. FYI, the so-called "simple word" IS abuse. Suppose you were a Jew and someone displayed the Nazi Swastika everywhere they went. How would you feel? Wouldn't feel good, would it? You'd get angry at them too. Having Asperger's and ADHD is not an excuse to be a self-centered jerk. Please think about others instead of yourself all the time.

Just tell her why tf would they make the song with the word retarded after the clean version. That makes no sense.

They tried to bite off the Bay Area lol it failed. The music in the bay at the time would have words like “get crazy, stupid, dumb, retarded” an actual line from the Federation feat. E-40 on a song called Hyphy. Black Eyed Peas used to record at 17 Hertz Studio in Hayward so they thought maybe they could get away with it? Lol didn’t work out too well.

Literally this!! I knew when I got this album in 2004 that some idiot would get *offended* by this song, and sure enough, next thing I know there's "Let's get it STARTED" on the radio soon after.

@@ZenMonkeyGodOh no, how dare someone else not enjoy hearing slurs used to degrade them on songs played on the radio connected to deep rooted ableism related trauma... You can still listen to the song in multiple places, it's just not on the radio, like literally nothing has changed, so really you're the one crying over nothing.

it's not even offensive. it's just accurate. consuming alcohol literally retards your motor functions. losing control of your body through impaired dance and lowered inhibitions is exactly what the song is all about. language matters. *"IN THIS CONTEXT, THERE'S NO DISRESPECT"*

@@vandam6057 I was just a young boy at the time so I don't know the general consensus from 2003, but I do know that between 2009-2014, calling someone retarded was a generally acceptable insult, only offensive to the person being insulted. That attitude generally changed around 2015-2016 when pathetic people wanted to have their own version of the n-word since they aren't black.
