I agree that consumers are pulling back, but I also think the tradition is dying. People are shopping earlier, later, online, etc. Going into a crowd is also dangerous in some areas. I'm spending my usual minimal amount for the holidays. I've avoided Black Friday like the plague for years. I find better deals at different times throughout the year.

I agree with others. We want to put food on our table before buying the crap we have had to buy from other countries. Sad that our factories & jobs have went to other countries and lost work for our own people & supported the money hungry. Sad that we have to have HIGH wages to eat because of High taxes, health care & insurance on everything. Even those coming across the border are wanting to go back to their countries because they can’t do better there than OUR homeless. This is beyond disgusting. Stand Strong Americans & Fight back.

All I can say is yay! The Christmas BS we’ve been fed for decades has made people with very little money buy junk that the recipients don’t want or need. Years (many years) ago we told everyone we would no longer be participating in the madness. No extended family members would be getting any gifts. We would donate only to food banks and our kids would get some cash. Christmas cheer? It returned for me. I even stopped decorating because I never really enjoyed that anyway and taking it down was worse. Years before that (in the ‘90’s) we took a vow of frugality/we stopped spending and became debt free. We love being anti mainstream and don’t give a flying duck what any of our relatives think! Even shopping online, I spent $0 for Black Friday. There were really no deals worth it. Most of the "sales" were only a small percentage off recent price hikes and some of them were just avoiding the planned future price hikes. My budget worries are feeding my family. I've been so bled out with ridiculous gas prices, insane taxes and fees for everything, and high costs for necessities that there's no money left for me to piss away on corporate greed. I've become so cheap with everything that no one is getting my money without earning it anymore. I've been setting the expectations with my family for years now. We're reducing to remembering holiday values and kicking consumerism out of our lives.

Thing is, the Black Friday tradition didn't have to die. Right when cyber Monday was taking off, people would still go out in mass for black friday and if they didn't quite get what they wanted then "oh I'll see if I can catch it on Monday" was the attitude. Corporate greed killed it all. It's turned into Black Friday month, where nothing is actually on sale except for maybe a few select things but not really stellar deals. Maybe 10-25% at most, and if you're super lucky 30-40%. On top of it, pricing is deceptive, so those % savings don't mean much to me. I saw several tags that were labeled as Black Friday sales, and when you pull the tag away regular retail the price beneath is the exact same, or maybe a few dollars cheaper. All smoke and mirrors, because you can pick an item and track it leading up to black friday. The thing will sit at, say, $20 for weeks on end. Then a week or so before, the store will jack the price up by $10-$15, and on black friday give you a "deal" for the price it usually is. All these corporations can go drown in the red for all I care. Give me a real black friday sale on food and I'll be at the store before the sun rises.
@ScottAllenFinance

> Corporate greed killed it all. And you are absolutely right when you say it killed IT ALL. The corporate greed of the last 40 years has killed SO MANY areas of our society and has turned us into a zombie people... I would say that I have hope that this year's crappy Black Friday is a sign that people are changing... but I think it's clear that people just don't have the money to spend on frivolous junk. My guess is if/when we have the disposable income again to do it, demand for this junk will explode again. Sad, depressing, but 100% our own fault and we certainly deserve whatever we get. Take care all.

It used to be quality. Things would last for years if not decades. I remember when China had "trademark" goods. They were exquisite material and quality workmanship... Then companies realized they could make more profit if they lowered the quality. Then they lowered labor costs by mfg. offshore. Then it became offshore with low quality equals cheap merchandise. Everyone was talking about how much they saved and the deals they got.... Then Trump said, 'wait a minute China is making too much money, so he put tariffs on Chinese imports'. This meant US consumers would be required to pay China and then pay US gov't for the tariffs owing. China didn't pay. It was the US buyer who paid the tariffs. To make up for the tariff costs, the merchandise became cheaper in price and quality. And that is what America has created.....

For the past few weeks they have been advertising massive price cuts and Black Friday deals. This morning I checked the price and was ready to buy. To my not so surprise they were offering the standard $100 price cut. It's not really a "sale" if the price doesn't change from its regular price. I'll check back in January 2024. I'm waiting for atleast a $200 price cut from $899 to $699. I can wait.

Black Friday has always been a bust. The main stream media likes to show fake footage of people shopping, trying to persuade the ones who have that "I want what they have" attitude, as they'll be the ones to show up. Same for Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc travel. They like to show old footage of traffic and say that millions of Americans are travelling for this holiday. This trick actually makes some go travel just because everyone else is.

I live in a rural area. Gasoline prices here in the state of Washington are the highest in the nation. The closest mall is an hour and a half away. I took advantage of the Black Friday sales today at my local farm supply store. I purchased 250 pounds of feed on a buy one, get another for half price sale. I saved $45.00 on chicken and dog food today. Clothes? Surely you jest!

We went to one store this year which was Scheels in The Colony, TX. If you’re not familiar with Scheels it’s a sporting goods store similar to Cabela’s. We got there at about 2:30PM and it was busy. Saved $400 on a thermal scope then found out from a salesman they’ve had it on sale since last week. Oh well, I’ve wanted one for a long time. I enjoy the channel and I don’t miss a video.

Now some people I know too are talking to their middle school and high-school kids about instead of shopping and getting gifts/things they go out and do some big experience travel vs more stuff and clutter etc… and their kids are on board with it 100% ..
