Liner Notes: R.I.P., Chris Cornell. No one sings like you anymore. That's abundantly clear to anyone venturing to cover Chris Cornell vocals. I really wasn't looking forward to inviting the inevitable comparisons. But I thought hearing my take on this song might be cathartic for some people, so I did this for those folks. It was certainly cathartic for me, making it. And such a great song. I heard Dave Grohl in an interview describe it as "The Beatles meets Black Sabbath". That about sums it up.
While preparing this cover, I found this live version from 2007. The vocal performance is simply mind blowing. I've lost count how many times I've listened to this version (ask my family!).

That's the stuff of legends, my friends. Seriously. It answers the "how good was Chris Cornell?" question emphatically. He was as good as there ever was and ever will be. And I like to think of his parting words at the end of that video as a message to us all: "Thank you very much. Be safe. Bye bye. Keep your minds open."
On a personal note, this song always reminds me of my brother, which is another reason I like it. I remember him mentioning he liked the high scream thing at the end. I hope you enjoyed it, Mark!
Thanks to Bryce for learning and performing this with me. He did a great job.
A note to the guitarists out there interested in this arrangement: I play it tuned a whole step down, with a drop D (drop C, really). And then we tuned up to A457 Hz. So it's sharp of standard tuning, A440. That's the tuning of the original as I heard it. I tried playing it the "right" way (not tuned down a whole step), but I just couldn't get the open sound I wanted--didn't translate well to my percussive style of acoustic strumming. So playing it in A (instead of G) was the answer for me. And you get that big low C during the C Bb D. Sounds huge.
So, if nothing else, at least we've answered the question, "What would Mike sound like covering Chris Cornell?" Like this. Exactly like this. I hope you enjoyed my humble effort. For those who think Chris Cornell shouldn't be attempted (or at least by me), I don't blame you. For everyone else, I hope you enjoy reliving this song with me. I hope my version helps remind you of what you love about the original. God bless Chris Cornell, his family and his fans.
Love,
Mike
