I was watching a bunch of these videos the past few days.. And i noticed the ones from the UK, people seem to not cause a pileup as the ones ive watched from the USA where tons of cars get wrecked in a pile. But both countries have a problem with people not using the correct tires for the situation. Even videos filmed in Snow Belt of NY and MN for example, people still using street tires not made for winter weather.

And people still say "You don't need winter tyres in Britain" while winter tyres and AWD/4x4 are not infallible on ice/black ice they do help and offer safer driving in all weather conditions during winter than standard summer tyres . It just makes sense seeing as your car is relying on four pieces of rubber each the size of a postcard to keep you on the road

21jg130 I agree living in Canada I doubt the OEM tires that Volvo used which were Pirelli Tires did the best in any of the seasons. I had some on the factory rims and then a separate set of good Winter tires on rims but sold them all to put the Yokohama geolander on as they're the All Weather tires that defeat All Seasons and look forward to testing them out this Winter.

I realise that unlike some jurisdictions, dedicated snow or studded Winter tyres are NOT legally required in the UK. However when conditions are THAT icy, then anyone sensible would stay blimmin' home. If you HAD to drive then you should probably have 4WD or AWD, *AND* then you should have snow-chains fitted as well. ONLY the addition of supplemental devices such as snow tyre chains, "snow-sox", those "cable-tie temporary snow grippers" or the alligator tail type snow chains etc will give decent traction when ice is THAT bad. Snow chains just on the front wheels of FWD are usually ok, but stick snow chains on all 4 wheels of a 4WD/AWD and then you can be getting places with reasonable safety... then you just need to watch out for all the other crazies on the road crashing into you.

One can clearly see that most people commening here never had to drive on real slick black ice....driver did a good job and "real" 4x4 would not have done it much better. The key are winter tires....not so much the 4x4 system or even manufacturer.

You are right to a degree, it's all about tyres, but a proper 4x4 like my Shogun sends power to all 4 wheels with no fluid couplings and it has locking differentials which help. I do have snow rated tyres on too but ironically it's been floods more than snow since forever!

As someone who never had snow where I live and only seen it on vacations (when I'd rather take a cab than drive) and never experienced ice on roads, I have no idea how to deal with it, but I'm a little curious... what are you supposed to do if you absolutely had to get out and rive in such weather? Use chains? Studs? Doesn't that cause a lot of wear on the roads?
@march149

Yes a good job getting ut, but what I don't understand, if it was that bad in the parking lot, I would have reparked the car and went inside. If the parking lot at the complex was that icy, wouldn't the streets be also???? Or am I missing something?

I wouldn't go out if the weather was like that I would just cabin up for a week it doesn't last long we're I live anyway in the North East because I am near the sea it's not worth the extra insurance on your car if you're car gets damaged nevermind the other car you would loose your 70% no claims bonus anyway its just not worth it unless you have money behind you it won't affect you as much I understand that some people haven't got that luxury but I have so I am staying in i claimed of my car insurance when I was younger by skidding on ice and hitting a parked car and my insurance went up next year when I went to renew my policy, / sod that.that will never happen again But then again I never used to think that way in my 20s but I do now in my late 50s , it's called life experiences .
