Glad you did this. Youre being a very good horse mom. Chiropractic and periodic massage therapy can be very helpful. It might be worth adding that to his regimen. By the way, the mouthful of water trick is horse humor. They love to "trick" humans by pretending to drink and then dribbling water on you. 😂

Your videos are excellent! I am in Tennessee, and this story of "Black jack" sounds SO MUCH like my journey with my gaited 10 year old gelding over the past 7 years!! Especially all the diagnostics, I do regular chiropractor/acupuncture, body work, have had every kind of lameness exam, xrays, ultrasounds, regular dental, sheath cleaning, you name it! Welcome to THE WORLD of horse ownership, especially for a "senior owner", getting the horse later in life! But the boarding facility looks fantastic! I too, changed barns and it's been a positive move, not as good as yours but 100% much better situation for the horse. Will continue to follow your story! God's blessings to you and Blackjack!

I have to say your efforts to help this boy are amazing. I hope you keep pouring your love into him. Ang get a good, experienced trainer to knock out some if his learned bad behaviors. I believe that some of the bucking and kicking stems from mistreatment and lack of proper handling. If you stick with it, and get him started on a good working routine with a trainer that doesn't let him get away with bad attitude, you will have a great horse. Don't teach him that bucking gets him out of groundwork. He needs leadership just as much as health care. Try not to focus on the assumption of him having pain. Horses are smart and can use your carefulness and compassion to get out of work.

So happy to hear he loved his adjustment ( at the end of the day they are athletes just like some of us humans so it’s nice for them to receive that kind of care) You are spot on correct with wanting to be there as much as possible when the vets/farriers/etc are there. You learn more by being there than if to have someone stand in for you AND you are apart of your horses health . Some horses do buck on the lunge to kick up their heels, BUT knowing their personality helps to distinguish this. A horse whose chill like yours, goes out on pasture, has a big area to run, but has a past with injuries( we will say) when they do buck on the lunge does raise some questions about pain( there is usually a reason for the buck) and you are spot on for trying to figure out what that may be. Being he was sore in his back could very well explain why he kicked out/bucked that day( remember the only way for a horse to communicate with us is through body language and when whispers aren’t heard then tend to go to bigger ordeals to let us know that something isn’t right. Happy you are getting answers and helping him to feel better within himself. When you listen to them they absolutely will show their appreciation for it❤️

I joined a brand group on Facebook when I originally bought Black Jack, but I didn't have much luck. I also searched on a brand site for my area, but now I'm not sure how local he is. I would love to know more about it though. I should do more searching. I've had other people mention not lunging in circles, especially with his flexor tendon issue. I will probably hold off doing that (which isn't hard considering I don't know how to).

14 would be a young retirement age for most horses. I think some of the issue might be his two years of forced confinement. Pasturing him is something he needs to improve his mental health. He is so sweet and gentle overall that I can't see why anyone had treated him the way they had. I am not a horseperson, but having helped in athletics training I would suggest putting him on the walker a couple of times a day for 20 or 30 minutes then give him a 5 or 10 minute break before doing a 20 or 30 minute training session, another short break, and finish with a cool down walk before cooling off his legs and ankles with some running water. Just my thoughts. The idea of vet exams is great, because you have to rule out medical issues causing behavioral issues. Then you have to consider temperamental ones, or previous training. Look at Ryan Rose, Clever Cowgirl You Tube channels for some experienced horse people training and care insights.

@@HorseTaleswithBlackJack Auction horses are known for having physical problems and emotional and performance problems. You took on a horse with all of those. I have seen many horses who were surrendered because they couldn't become what the owners wanted. I'm on Black Jack's side. I'm so scared he's going to end up back at a kill auction. He might just become a "pet." Rescues give them that chance to just become the pet because of all their problems. You're trying to do the right thing. I admire that. Horses are expensive, especially when they have problems. I wish you well, and just love him. Beware of "ranch horses."

Black Jack is a cutie and clearly loved the chiropractic adjustment, the yawning is also a release, so it was very cool to see him so relaxed afterwards….. my last horse also used to drink her water and then hold it in her mouth and then she would open her mouth and it would just come pouring out and I’d be like why do you do that? I guess it’s just a form of entertainment :) …. and one last thing, in regard to Black Jack bucking while being lunged, you never know what was done to him when he was on the lens line previously. I knew a gentleman that would get his horses on the lunge line and then just beat on them so Black Jack could be reacting to what was previously done to him well on the lunge line and it may not be pain related, you just don’t know and lastly, I agree with you that it’s best to be at all of Black Jack’s veterinary and shoer and chiropractor appointments. As a horse owner, I was always present with my horses, with the exception of my shoer who I’d been using for many many years and my horse absolutely loved him! I trusted him to pull my horse out and put her back, but otherwise I was always present for any kind of veterinary appointment or anything else…Thanks again for sharing the journey.

Again, love watching your learning journey. In addition to non-riding tricks, do you have access to a 'mountain trails' type arena, or grassy area with steps, logs and inclines?
