Chapter 11 Questionable Ethics
Freeman finds his way out of the waste processing plant via a service hatch and inadvertently discovers the Advanced Biological Research Lab, where he learns that Black Mesa has kept the aliens that are currently wrecking havoc on the facility in captivity for quite some time, and have conducted a series of questionable experiments aiming to weaponize them. With the only exit out to the surface sealed off and guarded by the HECU, Freeman must track down the remaining scientists if he is to have a chance at reaching the Lambda Complex.

Notes:
- Though the door at 12:27 appears to be blocked, bumping into it will open it up and allow Gordon to backtrack to the area at 10:26
- The Alien Grunts in this game used to fire homing hornets at Gordon, just like in HL1. However, this was taken out in favour of more damaging non-homing shots (13:54)
Trivia:
- In HL1, it was necessary to release the Alien Grunt at 2:03 in order to unlock the door to proceed onwards
- The captured agrunt at 2:03 is stripped of its armour and Hivehand, while HL1's version was fully armoured
- The Lab Announcements on the TVs such as at 3:25 cycle through various screens of updates
- The brand of TVs in the lab are hilariously called "FONY", an obvious pun on Sony and also "phoney"
- The tesla discharge in the Snark testing room (3:37) is inoperable
- G-man's eighth appearance at 5:20
- Similar to Chapter 2, the lockers at 6:51 contain the names of developers
- Bringing the pizza to the end of the game will result in a slightly altered ending sequence and reward players with the "Pepperoni Precipitation" achievement
- Interacting with the computer at 8:25 will hilariously result in a blue screen with "HL2.exe has stopped working", a reference to the well-known tendency of Source games to crash with the same error message. Text later comes up saying "Fix it Deniz!!". Deniz is one of the Black Mesa devs
- The HECU's original dialogue in the 2012 mod version was way darker - they mentioned going to "wrangle some lady doctors" before laughing sinisterly
- The motto "superbus via inscientiae" as seen at 9:00 can be loosely translated to "Proud by way of ignorance". Fitting for Black Mesa
- Unlike HL1, the second floor of the lab is inaccessible (shown at 9:20)
- The creature at 11:46 is the Leech, a cut enemy from the game but present in HL1. Also, a Dopefish can be seen drawn in the corner, a reference to an enemy that appears in the 1991 game "Commander Keen in Goodbye Galaxy"
- Using the Tesla discharge at 12:48 will release the agrunts from cryo and also cause the HECU to investigate, leading to the two parties fighting each other
- In HL1, Gordon prevents the shield at 20:17 from coming down by pushing a box underneath it
- At 20:28, the Tau Cannon is shown penetrating walls. From user Jean Scuissiato: "It just works on some walls of a certain thickness. Contrary to HL1 though, the beam does not go straight and the beam itself has a unique effect shape (looks like a RNA). It cannot explode through walls in it's original code, or ricochet at the player like HL1 but it has a bit of the original's feature. You can try making it penetrate walls playing off, it seems to work better on thin concrete ones"
- Though the Guard and Scientist both get killed by overcharging the Tau Cannon at 20:28, if Gordon overcharges it the HEV suit will absorb much of the discharge, damaging Gordon at the same time (as opposed to exploding into tiny bits)
- The Tau Cannon, acquired at 20:54, is also known as the "Gauss Gun" as referred to in the HL1 game files, as well as by its serial number XVL1456
- The tau is the largest member of the lepton family of elementary particles; like electrons, tau particles are negatively charged, but tau particles have more than three thousand times as much mass. This would explain the Tau Cannon’s powerful penetrating power, as well as its significant recoil (thanks Combine Overwiki!)
- The primary laser will be permanently disabled after firing it through the wall (23:28)
- The sheer radiation of the laser leaves behind the shadows of the headcrab cages at 23:38
- A security guard torso can be seen in the incinerator at 23:59
- Press F to pay respects to Peter at 24:59
- The scientist saying "Look what you did...I can't believe what you did" is a reference to the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (29:16)
- There are 5 experiments that Gordon can conduct in this chapter. Performing all of them will result in an achievement ("Ethically Questionable"). They are as follows:
1) Kill the agrunt at 2:03 using the console (
2) Use up all the Snarks in the launcher at 3:37
3) Use the Tesla Discharge on the Bullsquid at 5:47
4) Gassing the headcrabs in the Xen habitat at 18:13
5) Using the primary laser at 20:14 WITHOUT disabling the shield
