I appreciated Beyond the Sea because it actually took itself seriously for one thing. Black Mirror's attempts at humor just really don't work on me, they make the whole message feel less poignant and it ruined much of Joan is Awful for me. Having said that, Beyond the Sea was both sadly predictable and padded out beyond reason. This really could have been wrapped up within 50 minutes or so. And the ending was really clunky. So yeah, paradoxically, I guess the best made episodes were those that had the least to do with Black Mirror altogether.

About beyond the sea: Wouldn't it make more sense if they sent the replicas to space and kept the real astronauts on earth? Black mirror has always been about human nature confronting the horrors created to mend it. It profits off of our fears about technology by uncovering why we dare to make it in the first place. I wish they could’ve expanded upon these feelings but they seemingly abandoned it in hopes that they could create this mind bending tension through other means. Trash. What was once so compelling about Black Mirror was it's new age look at the darker side of the human experience through a lense of the futuristic age of technology, its fresh unknown actors (that received greater opportunities through their debut roles on BM), the deeply thought provoking and disturbingly relatable writing/writers, and it was captivating in a way that held your attention from beginning to end. Honestly after all the hype and popularity of its 1rst season soo many big name actors..writers..directors..and producers just globbed onto it. By season 2 it had a major decline in authenticity and intellectual ideology. The actors cast were already famous in their own right therefore less hungry and not as interesting to watch. They should've kept their integrity and stuck to the formula that had us all soo interested. Most of season 6 episodes barely had anything to do with sci-fi/ future/ or technology...just seemed lik alot of vapid stories about murder that went no where, said nothing and weren't even visually pleasing to watch. Season 6 felt more like a season of American Horror Story. It was mostly paranormal/occult-like stuff. I enjoy Black Mirror when it delves into technology and its potential darker implications. What also made little sense is the timeline. Do the episodes from all the seasons not take place in the same timeline? I do believe the final episode of season 6 ended in nuclear armageddon. So, does this mean BM episodes from previous seasons whose settings occur in the future all have a history where a nuclear armageddon occurred? That seems wild. Individually, I understand the episodes. Overall and how it relates to the entire series, however, Season 6 made little sense to me.

At first I had the same opinion as most, “why is there like no technology in any episodes!?” But looking back, I honestly think that the directors and writers have noticed how people can so easily figure out the message and the tech behind each episode. So for this season they wanted to make it up to interpretation. What if Demon 79 takes place inside of a cookie? For those who don’t know, a cookie in the black mirror world is an alternative self conscious that is commonly used in multiple episodes. What if Demon 79 is showing a test similar to the trolly test but in real life, showing how far someone will go to help other people they will never meet. Similar to hang the DJ, it’s all just a test and killing 3 people is how you pass, or maybe not killing 3 people is how you pass idk. I could be totally taking this too far and all it’s actually about is a demon and an alternative world but idk maybe not. Mazey day on the other hand. That one confused me. Black mirror has always felt realistic like it could actually happen, but adding a werewolves curse takes that away. What if this episode has a much bigger meaning then just invasive paparazzi? Someone help me out with that one lol

I think the intention to steer the show in a different direction is a good one. However, I think the show runners missed an opportunity to point at the horrors of how close we are to what they’ve been outlining from the beginning of the show. There is a palpable anxiety around technology (thanks in large part to earlier seasons) and to be able to expand on it could’ve been more interesting as opposed to pivoting and ignoring it.
@moonchild5713
Жыл бұрын
This season was a complete shift, but I don't think the concept of unpredictable technology is gone for good, in fact I think there will be a return to it. Regarding the "missed opportunity", I believe Charlie had a vision for this season and executed it perfectly. From articles I've read, he's stated that he wanted to do something different with the show (as we can now see) and essentially focus more on horror this time around. There is also the addition of the Red Mirror label in "Demon 79", which emphasises that as well as hinting at a possible spin-off. Back to your original statement, I believe there will be a return to what made Black Mirror so iconic because the majority of things that give people "palpable anxiety around technology" nowadays are relatively new and (in my opinion) inspired by past episodes of this very series or (more generally speaking) other related media. I can 100% see the 7th season of Black Mirror including things like NFT's and AI-generated art, and contrary-wise 100% could not see those aspects being included in this 6th season because of how rapidly they've blown up over the past few years alone. With production on season 6 starting early last year, I think it's safe to assume that while those forms of technology were "taking over the world" so-to-speak, these episodes were already written.
@LibertyRapsher

If the intention is to steer the show in a different direction then they should end the Black Mirror series and begin a new series, otherwise it's a gimmick and they're using the Black Mirror name to market a new series under the Black Mirror name.

I think Episode 1 mostly criticizes our desire for drama (e.g. reality tv, ) despite its unethical/destructive production. Episode 2 also frames its criticism by addressing streaming services. I think I'd like to politely disagree with you on this one. Loch Henry was also my favourite Black Mirror episode (with Shut Up and Dance in close second), I think one thing the show does really well is play into the "what if"s of now, it's all well and good to look at what could happen in a distant future but I think it's more eerie and terrifying in a way to look at how the technology we have now - and in the case of Loch Henry, have had for years - can drastically alter our lives. The episode is about technology, without the old camera and VCR the plot wouldn't have unfolded in the way that it did, without film making devices and their commercial availability, we wouldn't even be in Scotland. We don't notice the presence of technology as much as other episodes because it's the kind of technology we already co-exist with. I also thought the humour and 'lack of conflict' in the episode was very refreshing and only made the ending that much more hard hitting. Side notes: I really like your analysis of Beyond the Sea, I also think it's incredible. Mazey Day was indeed, awful. It was such a good concept and has such strong themes but the werwolf thing felt so unnecessary and out of place. I loved Demon 79, especially the exploration of race and politics with all of the elements of comedy and it's actually really cool to see all of these episodes be set in the past, present or very near future

I loved the new season because of pretty much the very reason this vid says it was bad. This season went away from the usual black mirror tech stuff. It was different. Which they frankly had to do. There is only so much tech stuff you can keep repeating before it becomes predictable. The exploration into the supernatural while not tech related was entertaining. This season was more focused on the commentary on how society is in other aspects of life instead of just tech. I think this entire season's main theme was about second chances. Each episode looked at giving people second chances through different lenses. They also pulled off comedy really well in the first episode. So, overall this is by far one of the best seasons of black mirror.

i vented to a friend about season 6. i'll leave some of my thoughts here because i'm passionate about this series. Black Mirror in my eyes was always a series where the writers / directors were always trying to commentate on a modern day issue and also trying to start a discussion on modern technology and "was it even worth creating this tech." I've only seen two episodes so far, but the two i've seen were a far cry from the perplexing technological horror i've come to love about Black Mirror. Especially in Joan Is Awful's case, up until the last 10 minutes or so, it felt more paranomal than technological. I got the impression that the writer had an idea for some paranormal horror and really wanted to make it happen, but quickly tacked on the technological ai deepfake bit to push it through screening so it could get the greenlight to get made. As well as that, season 6 feels really off beat compared to everything before season 5. Something I'd come to love (being the commentary on real world issues) felt like it wasn't prioritised and that it felt like it was trying to bite off way more than it could chew. Especially in Joan Is Awful, when i first watched the earlier seasons, i could usually get a grasp of the social issue within half the episodes runtime. with fifteen million merits it was the vicious and commerical world of public speaking / television, with hated in the nation it was the falling out of honey bees and action that was needed for them, with white bear it was cancel culture and online witch hunts.. etc Joan Is Awful felt like it was trying to convey three different main points to me, but it didn't bite down hard on any of them. was it the increasingly elaborate and terrifying way tech companies breach privacry and make content catered specifically to you? or maybe the level AI is at right now and how deepfakes can affect public image? or was it the often long winded, complicated and confusing wording of user agreement forms? Joan Is Awful also had a really cheery and triumphant end to it. Black Mirror was always a show to me that had bittersweet endings. Men against fire had the soldier realise the truth behind the roaches, and ultimately get his memory erased and discharged. Hated in the nation had the deaths of hundreds of thousands due to the electronic bees. sorry, ive kinda grown up watching this show so it means a lot to me. i hate to see it get reduced to *this*.

You know what pisses me off the most is that most of the episodes were pretty okay... if they weren't Black Mirror episodes. Like the Loch Henry one? As predictable and rushed as the ending was, it had potential. But it just didn't feel like it fit in... the Mazey Day one too, this one was just dumb compared to the other episodes, even compared to the ones in the same season, but it couldve made a decent AHS episode or something

I really liked season 6, in terms of sci-fi originally with beyond the sea, loch henry was one of favorites having this really dark turn into old town wounds and the ending scene with the mother hanging herself and leaving her son all the evidence and seemingly not regretting the murders she committed. Demon 79 was funny and sad, I honestly expected the ending being more towards the main character being mentally ill and committing the murders out of delusions. Joan is awful was an interesting take on meta commentary and it was relatively heart warming towards the end. Mazey day was the only one that kinda felt off but i still liked the premise even if it felt the episode could of done/explored more Id rank the episodes this way 1. Beyond the Sea (Acting was amazing) 2. Loch Henry 3. Demon 79 4. Joan is awful 5. Mazey Day

I really feel like the internet wants something to be either the BEST or the WORST. People online cannot seem to digest the idea of a show being "good but could be better". Personally I loved the season! It was way better than season 5 for me. The stories were creative, and I liked all of them except that werewolf episode, which still was not the worst thing ever. Beyond the sea was INSANELY GOOD! I kinda knew it wont end well, but even then the last few minutes shocked me. Loch Henry episode had the best plot twist I have seen in a while, and I am someone who devours murder mystery stories, so props to the episode for being able to stand out in a genre which can be full of cliches. 'Joan was awful', also loved it, what an opener to the season. And just finished the demon 79 story. AMAZING!! I want an entire show just on that premise hahaha. The only thing I felt was weird was that the vibe of the season overall felt more like 'Love Death Robots' than black mirror, especially with Loch Henry episode. But again, thats a small nitpick.

Yeah this season was not my favourite. It seems to have lost what made Black Mirror unique in the first place. Loch Henry, Mazey Day, and Demon 79 didn't really deal with anything futuristic, so they almost didn't feel like Black Mirror episodes. Joan is Awful and Beyond the Sea were the only ones that really felt like Black Mirror to me, but there was still a lot that didn't make sense to me, like how Beyond the Sea was meant to take place in the future, but everyone is dressed like they're in the 60s. I get that it could have been an aesthetic choice, but I wish there was some sort of explanation as to why that was the case. Also Mazey Day and Demon 79 actually take place in the past, which to me makes no sense for Black Mirror. Black Mirror has always been futuristic sci-fi about what our current technology could evolve into and how it could become the downfall of society. This season strayed away from that original concept almost entirely, which is so odd.

Honestly as someone who lives in the UK, Demon 79 was by far the best episode. Outwith it just being generally quite a fun ride with a wacky ending, the absolute unbearable tension it also manages to deliver with seeing the bigotry that permeates throughout our culture through the eyes of the main was for me the most black mirror type tenseness I felt this season. I do feel this is super nitpicky but Loch Henry was absolutely ruined for me by the utterly pointless death of the girlfriend, it genuinely made me sigh when she just happened to fall and immediately one shot herself via rock. What are you even running from bro? a decrepit old woman who you know isn't even chasing you. Joan is awful and Mazey Day were super mid at best, just kinda blegh episodes with kinda cool concepts. My hot take is probably that Beyond the sea was by far the most wasted potential of an idea iv ever seen in my life. It was a decent episode with some great acting but the literal second his family was killed I immediately called the entire episodes plot, guy will get to use other guys body, will start to fall in love with the wife, will either kill the wife or kill Aaron pauls character, it was just so blegh. Someone came up with an idea that was great and they made it this run of the mill love triangle shit thats used all the time like really? that is all you could think of?

yeah it’s so predictable and tired tropes with Loch Henry and Beyond the Sea loose end Murder Mystery with the “nice folk” the actual killer, wow how shocking 😱. We had the killer plot pinned on either the bar owners or the mother and in the space one, the moment David’s family was killed, I knew it was gonna be this long drawn out crap about how he slowly goes insane and sabotages the space mission and/or Cliff’s family too. This one especially annoyed me because I hate seeing professional astronauts go insane in like every space fiction plot ever. just…. ugh. uninteresting. I hope the other episodes are fun or spice things up, at least the first episode was silly in an entertaining way. It’s hard to feel suspense when I see the “plot twists” coming a mile away and I spend all episode waiting for the predictable thing to happen.
