This was more or less the plot of an episode of the 80s Twilight Zone revival, where criminals in a future dystopia are branded with a mark on their foreheads that make them "untouchables" that the rest society (and even other criminals) are forbidden to talk to or even acknowledge exist. The antisocial protagonist thinks it's great at first but it quickly turns into a living hell for him. 80's TZ was very hit-or-miss but that episode was one of the best of the series.

SS Robs yeah but that’s where the writing of black mirror is questionable. Either the show is intentionally misleading us by showing the computer code as having emotions, free will, and desire or it actually has those things which begs the question as to why would anyone program that stuff into what’s supposed to be subservient code. It’s not uncommon that the show tries to have its cake and eat it too.
@ssrobs2552

NeonTime True, there's some definite inconsistencies and things left up to the audience's interpretation. I'd say since they attempt to say it's making a whole entire copy of the person's consciousness multiple times, if not try to make it seem as though it IS them at certain points aswell, and even grants cookies citizenship in the lore of the show it would be just as bad as doing it to a normal person. It definitely wouldn't make sense to copy someone's brain patterns to make a whole new AI version of them for something as simple as a home control system that we can do now much more easily though. Thats one of the biggest stretches in my opinion. I guess its to show just how little they're valued or something along those lines but still comes off as a bit silly to say the least.

Never has a Christmas carol sounded so sinister. And think about the implications : - no interaction with anybody (obviously) which means no friendship or romantic relationship (he's a sexual offender but it's still downright cruel) - impossible to listen to any music or watch any movie, since all voices and actors would be blocked as well. The only thing he could enjoy is synthetic voices - impossible to order anything to eat, except if you can write to a restaurant - impossible to work (how is he going to earn money ?) - probably impossible to have technology either, or to travel...

I thought the ending which included the guy with the snow globe was a clever reference to when Joe killed Gordon earlier in the episode.

Everybody freaking out on this: just think about it. All blocked people by now probably has formed groups or clubs finding a way to interact with each other. E.g. by taking videos, they see all devices. Not worse than sign language or being blind. They even can even have sex with each other, cooking, sporting together etc. It's a handicapp, but with your own people you can live a fairly ok life.

he can still see police. so, just date a policewoman... further, if he can't hear what the people are saying, can he function in society? how would he communicate with a service agent (bank, register, butcher, baker, etc...). so okay, the VAST majority of people are blocked and it's absolute hell. but, not ALL people are blocked...

I don't think so. This guy can still see nature, can hunt and survive in exile in a forest, this is what i think he would do. But the man in the cabin will stay in that house forever with that loudy as fuck song

I would take a couple years in jail, but knowing how fucked up is this universe justice system, maybe criminals are send to a torture camp for the rest of their lifes even if the crime is tax evasion.

The series show that technology isn't the problem, the people is the problem in this planet, the people have rights to punish other people, even the virtual guy are much more worse than them. The 'siri' women in this episode too. to have a assistant in your home, she can make a 'copy' of herself, torture her, brake her mind is the worst I can imagine

This is still better than going to prison, there you are locked up from the world, you still don't get to see your loved ones or almost anyone most of the time, at least here you can visit different places, you can go out, eat what you want and do many things that are not allowed inside of a prison jail.
