I worked as a server in a fancy Italian restaurant years ago and there was a black guy who would usually have 3 guests and drop $400-500 every time. He tipped around $150. I was not expecting that and was pleasantly surprised.

If you can't afford to leave a tip, stay home make your own food, clean your own mess. I agree 100%, I don't think I have ever not left a tip even with bad service, but the tip will definitely get larger with exceptional service.

I do understand your point of view. Im black and I leave tips all the time. But some times i noticed some servers pre judge me and assume im not going to tip and i have to wait 30 mins for a refill or have to call a manager to find out waitress. What do you do in that case.

when i go out and get that poor of a service, I don't tip. You should not tip just because you feel you need too. I think if you get good service and didn't ask for much just leave a little something. 30 min for a refill. i would have gotten up and got it myself. Poor service is never acceptable...

I was a server for a few years, and was a great server as you are. The people who tip good make up for the cheapskates and then some.

I worked restaurants in Louisiana. Most black family’s for me was 50/50. The worst I’ve ever seen is pentecostals. They are the most rude people I’ve ever served in my life. It could just be my area but I’ve never seen them tip once in my life and they will ask for absolutely everything and extra and run you all night.

I always tip heavy since i dont go out much, and if i go somewhere ive been a couple of times before i usually seem to get really good service with big smiles, which just tells me the servers all let each other know who the big tippers are and who to treat well with their service.

I think it’s also getting worse because of how everyone is saying tipping culture has gotten out of control. So now, even more people opt out of tipping just because they’re irritated being asked for tips from every establishment they patronize. I was a server and bartender for a couple years and that has given me so much empathy for employees in the service industry. I think if everyone had the job for even just a few months, we’d have a lot better tippers.

Is Tipping Mandatory? Should it be? Is tipping just an excuse for employers in the US to pay you below minimum wage? If tipping IS NOT mandatory should you be mad at a person for spending money at your restaurant that does not leave a tip? Does ownership care? Should they? Should servers be paid hourly like they do in Europe? If servers got paid hourly instead of by tips would service be worse?

Great questions, especially #2. I once saw a counter argument to the complaining about non-tippers - they asked, "why should I be responsible for paying you a fair wage". And they make a great point. Now while I do tip when it's deserved, these are my observations. Is the real problem not the employers who think you don't even deserve to be paid minimum wage or a decent hourly wage? But of course many if not most will choose to be disingenuous, intellectually dishonest and deny it then deflect because those complaining about it really are so selfish that they don't actually care about the next server or they would get together and protest these employers paying them $2 an hour. Is that not the American way? Protesting what you're against and have strong feelings about? But you can't because you're only out for yourselves. It's more convenient to try and shame individuals, the lazy route. But apparently they didn't think that through because now people are sick of seeing and hearing that nasty unprofessional behavior, both tippers and non-tippers, being made to feel as if tipping is mandatory so now people are tipping less often and if they do tip you get less. They really expected a positive outcome from attempting to force people to do something.

The funny thing to me then becomes why you all get so amazed that people have issues wanting to serve those tables or people have issues wanting to take those deliveries..... And I'm sure it sucks because when you have 80% that burn you it makes it bad for the 20% that have good intentions but I'm not going to lie you all get thrown into A group and I'm not the only person to feel that way

At the end of the day tipping is optional. Yes it’s rude and they should tip. But it’s optional. That’s how optional works.

a lot of things are optional. Like cooking or going to a place that doesn't rely on tips. heck, get your food Togo. all good options
