Paulownia is a great choice for charcoal used in black powder production. It makes a very fast powder for pyrotechnics used in lift and burst charges.
Paulownia has simple, heart shaped leaves with palmate pinnate venation that are arranged opposite on the stem. In the US it is considered an invasive species and is usually found in disturbed areas with ample sunlight. These trees grow very quickly and young plants can grow up to 15’ a year to a mature height of 50’ and a 30’ canopy spread.
Paulownia can be confused with the native Catalpa which also has simple, heart shaped leaves. Catalpa has pinnate venation and is arranged in whorls. The Catalpa forms large seed pods resembling string beans and has a rougher, more furrowed bark.
