Black River & Western 60 holds the title of the oldest operable steam locomotive in New Jersey, one she wears with pride. The consolidation runs along quaint farmland and countryside nestled in Hunterdon County. In this video, the beloved locomotive can be seen doing what she does best - pulling passenger trains for the BR&W. The whistle heard in this video is a GTW 6 Chime, allegedly off of Grand Trunk Western U3-b 6323.
Black River & Western 60 is a 2-8-0 Consolidation built by the American Locomotive Company in August 1937. 60's original work was in the Great Plains of Colorado, pulling many of the Great Western Railway's sugar beet and molasses trains. Like many other of the GWR's steam locomotives, 60's smokebox was extended during World War II, allowing for more efficient use cheaper grades of coal. By 1963, 60 was purchased by the newly-formed Black River & Western Railroad and by 1965 was again operating. In 2000, 60 was taken out of service. She sat dormant for 12 years, returning to operation in 2012. Since then, 60 has faithfully served the BR&W and is beloved by many.
