my only issue with the story in these films is that they make the royal navy seem like blithering idiots a lot of the time, when in reality if you were a pirate and the navy showed up you typically ran as fast as you could in the opposite direction. The Royal Navy at this time was one of if not *the* most well trained and disciplined fighting force on the planet. You can still show that and then show the pirates besting them, but don’t just make them the comic relief or turn them into stormtroopers.

You are right. No pirate would reach the firing sequence of a ship of the british navy. Pirates were not trained to destroy enemy ships but enter them - if they were trained at all.

The royal navy kept to trade routes only, unless they were moving troops. And even when they did show up, pirate ships were always faster,, the exception being brig and sloop, but they lacked the fire power to stop a fleeing ship,, and they lacked the crew to properly board. It was because of men like Henry Morgan that the royal navy could claim so many victories during the age of the pirate.

@@leedavis8093 "Tell the royal marines that tabed all those miles and fight in the Falklands" Gladly. In doing so, I'll tell you right off it's the distance that makes it silly. Take a look at how far away the belligerents are from one another. Are these pirates Olympians? Those ships are miles apart. Sure, you might get a few guys across, but you'll lose most of them along the way to exhaustion. Then, you have to consider the Royal Navy. They'd clashed with pirates enough to watch out for just this sort of thing, and it's not like they were a collection of retards. You don't think a single person out of the entire crew and officers (who specifically look for boarders from the quarter deck) are going to miss a collection of bobbing heads closing in on them across the battlespace? Right. Moreover, effective amphibious forces don't wear heavy, calf-length leather boots with wooden heels. In short order they act like kettle balls strapped to their feet. Regarding kit, the equipment the Brits used...pardon me...the equipment used by 3 Commando Brigade in the Falklands was designed for amphibious warfare. They weren't outfitted with whatever they could scrounge or steal from others on the high seas. That, coupled with hours and hours of intense training - (training that took untold years to tailor for maximum effect by numerous individuals spanning generations) - gave the Brits...sorry again...gave 3 Commando Brigade a distinctive advantage Teach and his pirates would never have had. You think pirates got up every day to work out, drill, train, work out, run, and train to do it all over again the next day? Every day? I didn't either. It's embarrassing to compare a colonial era pirate raiding party - from - a - movie - to a technologically advanced, First World fighting force from the 20th Century - and reality. Movies and real life are two very different things. Try to take note of the differences when you feel like shooting off your mouth.

The make-up artists really did a solid job in changing Ray Stevenson into the intimidating monstrosity that was Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach for this show. Exactly as you would imagine him: 6ft4 tall, bíg strong dude, with a black beard, bright-blue eyes that could stare right through your soul...and armed like a platoon! He got a pérfect introduction to the series in that awesome 'Three Lies'-scene? It's a statement to the actor Stevenson to play a scary, calculatingly intelligent and serious person like thát, compared to the jolly/nonchalant berserking 'stormtrooper of Rome', Titus Pullo? He was amusing in The Three Musketeers, as well, as Porthos. But in Black Sails, they gave Stevenson the chance to really portray one of thé most notorious pirates in history, as a humane being, and Stevenson náiled it imho! I think Stevenson's portrayal of Blackbeard is perhaps the most realistic in current TV-production? Of all documentairies, historical facts and 'wild stories', this sorta puts a fár more believable story to the man?

Maybe - I'm not super familiar with British naval practices. But it's not "totally implausible" like you suggest. Maybe not super realistic, but there certainly is a plausible and obvious explanation in the show as to why there weren't marines on the ship. You'd have to be a huge history buff to know otherwise. I think that almost every complaint I've seen about this clip are because people are forgetting (or don't know) the context of the clip, or because they're nitpicking relatively small details like the ships being anchored. The main problem is overcomming the several hundred men on the ship once you got there, could have been made much more epic as gunners turned to grab whatever weapon was near by and repelled boarders. Seeing Star Trek may be more similar to reality than this, the pirates actually avoided confrontation with a warship at all costs, their ships were not sufficiently artillery, and obviously they were looking for simpler prey, such as merchants or populations poorly defended coastline. On a large number of occasions, the Spanish evicted these murderers from the islands and areas where they settled without the possibility of resistance, and later after the English settlement in the area, the same thing, if the navy came, the pirates could not face them. . In the end, a romantic myth of these people is generated, who did not stop being murderers, and criminals.

Black Beard was actually killed by Lt. Maynard. Maynard, in an unarmed ship, outsmarted Black Beard by hiding his men below decks and luring Black Beard into boarding him. They then sprang from hiding, taking Black Beard and his men completely by surprised. Maynard then basically out dueled Black Beard one on one, with a Highlander decapitating Black Beard from behind.

Maynard had 2 armed ships, Ranger and Jane, they said that ship Jane even damaged the pirate ship Advanture with either lucky shot or the crew's skill, Blackbeard's ship took out Ranger's captain and 5 of his men, but Maynard and his men hide inside the other ship Jane to deceive Blackbeard when he entered their ship, they basically sacrificed a lot of men and needed an ambush to took out Blackbeard. Also Maynard didn't beat Blackbeard in 1 v 1, his sword was broken by Blackbeard then Maynard shot him with a pistol but it didn't stop Blackbeard, then Maynard's men attacked him from behind so thats how they beat him not 1 v 1. Maynard says they shot him 5 times and landed 20 sword cuts, Blackbeard was outnumbered heavily by them.

However the shot failed to stop his opponent and barely slowed him down. Both drew their cutlasses and a melee ensued between the two. After a short period, Blackbeard managed to break Maynard's cutlass. When Blackbeard was about to deliver a killing blow to Maynard, another sailor, a Highlander, jumped on Blackbeard's back and inflicted a deep wound. With the intervention of another sailor, this redirected Blackbeard’s cutlass and struck Maynard’s knuckles instead of killing him. Maynard and his crew were then able to kill Blackbeard'' Maynard was losing 1 v 1.

I'm a fan of Black Sails. That being said... while the visuals and general cinematography here is cinema worthy, the way the pirates win doesn't make sense. Swimming that far unnoticed (yes, they would have posted lookouts... maybe not expecting swimmers, but possibly expecting boats) is not believable. In terms of storytelling, I much preferred season 1: It was made clear that a single (unseen) British warship was something they were genuinely worried about and when they foolishly attempt a 2v1 against a heavy warship, they get their asses handed to them. In later seasons, it seems the warships were no more effective than Imperial Star Destroyers.

Accurate or not, I know one thing when it comes to shown standard battle tactics. These ships were built to resist fire from particularly the sides (as that's where the crew, cannons and powder was stored, but also to fend of prolonged banging of waves). That is not to say the rear and front were completely weak matches' wood. After all, the front faced much friction from journeys as it breaks through waves. Obviously that needs to be very strong and resistant. But there was significantly less protection there all the same. What's more, a shot from the front or rear has a much further range on damage than it would from side to side. What 10 shots could do to damage from the sides, 1 or 2 shots from the rear could do that and even more damage. That is why they always sailed "in Line", each ship protecting each other's front and rear. So the shot shown at 2:55 , regardless of who ordered it, was actually not that far from accurately true. It just didn't happen as easily as shown here.
@Stripedbottom
5 жыл бұрын
That's called 'raking'. It wasn't really a question of how the different sides of the ships were 'protected' because essentially, they were not. It was recognised that at the ranges these battles took place and the firepower involved, wooden ships no matter how well made were essentially unprotected, and it was simply a question of getting the upper hand at the start of the battle and then being able to deal more damage to the enemy faster than he could to you while being hopefully able to absorb more damage than he could at the same time. The benefit of raking was simply that a cannonball traveling through a ship lengthwise had a much better chance of dealing much more damage than one that simply penetrated the ship's side. Whereas a sideways penetrating shot might be able to take out 2 cannon crews - one on both sides of the ship - the same shot delivered fore-and-aft might wipe out a whole deck battery from one side. Raking was especially effective against the ship's rigging and a ship that lost a major part of that during a naval battle usually fell quickly out of it's battle line, lost the all-important strength in numbers, became a sitting duck and was usually finished off pretty quickly. A raking shot from the stern was especially sweet as it could easily disable the enemy's steering and rudder which was otherwise not so easy to hit from the side. Again resulting in falling off the battle line etc.

Spain, France,... most navies in the world indeed tried to shoot at their enemies from a distance. While the Royal Navy tried to get in as close as possible and then unleash a broadside from up close and then fire as fast as they could. They did this at Traffalgar to great effect. Redcoats did the same on land. Get in close, and then let the discipline and faster reloading do its work.
