Black skimmer chicks face dangers in their colony at St. Pete Beach in St. Petersburg, Florida. Even though protected from other predators by the sheer numbers of adults in the group, chicks are still vulnerable to the elements and even to other black skimmers. One little chick succumbed for an unknown reason, possibly the heat. When unprotected by parent, wandering little ones are dive-bombed by other black skimmers and pecked at by terns. Crows and gulls are incessant dangers to little ones - fortunately none were around.
