Very few snakes are appealing as the black Sumatran short tail python. Their docile temperament, stout, thick bodies, and aggressive feeding response check a lot of boxes for the snake keeper. Readily available in the pet trade, these are non venomous constrictors that feed on small mammals and avians.
The individual snake you see in this video was produced by Nick Bottini of Cold Blooded Earth, and represents generations of line breeding with the intent to produce the darkest animal possible. This Sumatran will get blacker as it ages, continuing to reward the keeper through the years.
In the wilds of its native jungle, the Sumatran short tail python lies sedentary under the leaf litter of the forest floor, waiting for prey to approach. In captivity, they enjoy an ambient temperature of 80 Fahrenheit with a slightly warmer basking spot to help with digestion, and efforts should be made to replicate their natural habitat.
These snakes will stay slightly smaller than other short tail species, and can live on average 20 years in captivity if their needs are consistently met. Like all snakes, ownership of these creatures must be taken seriously, and is a commitment.
We hope you have enjoyed our Sumatran short tail python, thanks for watching!
