Very cool! Reminds me of a tub manure spreader with openings in the bottom. Interesting video.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tub manure spreader like you’re talking

@@AnglesideFarm OK I’ve seen those I guess I never really knew what they were I probably thought they were some type of TMR mixer or something. Be interesting to find an old one like that and converted into a black walnut processor

Those are the walnuts you picked with the nut roller? Interesting to see the homemade swinging chain nut breaker.

Well this stuff is just knocking the husk off of them it’s not really supposed to break the nuts a few here and there to get broken

Black Walnuts are some kind of tough! Nothing like English Walnuts.

So do the de,hulled walnuts come out of the green tube,but then do they still have to be washed ?
@biffmalibu3733

you can cure them without washing but when you crack them later the black hull residue gets all in your nut meat and makes a mess. I use a Harbor freight concrete mixer to clean mine.

I hull anywhere from 5000 to 8000 black walnuts by hand every year and I need to make something like this. I like the chain idea rather than using tires as the beaters. I'm not fond of microscopic pieces of tire rubber in with my walnuts. Just one question.....does the exit portal for the nuts go on the bottom or is it slightly raised and why is it that no hulls go out with the nuts? Also, what is the function of the large blue pipe which feeds into the yellow bucket? This looks like it works quite well.

No the portal is not raised it’s just at the far opposite end of where you put the nuts into the green pipe was supposed to be for an exit but you just end up having to get way too many nuts flopping around in there before they start exiting out of there I used to have it working but right now it’s not working that good

I'm gathering the materials to build one of these in the next month or two. How far apart did you weld you chains - looks like 2" or 3" apart? Are they set at 45 degree angles running up the shaft? What is the spacing between the rebar along the bottom, something like 5/8th? How big is the exit hole? Appreciate any guidance!
@michiganhay7844

The exit whole is about the size of a baseball the bar stock on the bottom is a half inch apart and the chains are all well that right next to each other one after another perpendicular to the shaft but they are welded in a cork screw pattern on the shaft

Runs probably around 300 RPMs if you go up to 540 end up cracking nuts
