I think one of the few things that could make your channel better is to post the scientific name of the fruit in the description if not in the title. I notice you did put it in our article as thank you for that and for eating things for my general entertainment.

That's a novel idea. I know this is 3 years old, but I am loving the segments where Jared cooks with the fruit occasionally. It's really cool to see how it's used, especially natively. Not the same exactly, but transporting rare fruit to a chef probably isn't too possible, and in any case the native uses are much more interesting to me. I would however in a fantasy world love to cook with some of these

I just found this episode and realized it is the fruit of a tropical jasmine bush that I have. I tasted it, and I do get blackberries, but more like the half or fully dried blackberries you find late in the season, with a hint of prune and honey like you said. So it's a cool fruit. The flowers make a great tea, and the fruit is a nice jame dark brown to black in color so I would assume it's very nutrient dense. Thanks.

I decided to google what it looks like, and when I saw its leaves and flowers, I thought, "hmm that looks like a gardenia", sure enough they're both in the same family (Rubiaceae).
@erikjohnson9223
5 жыл бұрын
The flowers are also supposed to smell like Gardenia flowers (& a slow, short plant), so it should make a wonderful houseplant combining utility ( edible fruit), beauty, and fragrance. Yet I have only rarely seen seeds (never locally, but sometimes mail order places like Tradewinds Fruit) , and never plants, for sale in the US. Has anyone grown this indoors? Is it difficult?

SO excited you finally reviewed this fruit! I’ve been debating getting it for a while now but I wasn’t sure it would live up to the hype. Would you say this would be something that is tasty and novel enough to grow for the fruit? Do you think the average rare fruit lover would actually want to eat this on occasion or is it more of a “one and done” type of thing? Thanks again for your awesome videos!
@WeirdExplorer

I would use it if I were growing it, but Its a little strange for a handfruit, so I probably wouldn't buy it much. I could see using it for cooking or actually spreading on toast.
@erikjohnson9223

Jen Thompson , From what I've read, it is related to Gardenia and has very fragrant flowers that resemble single Gardenias (e.g. G. radicans, as opposed to the rose/camelia form which is more popular in the US). It may or may not be productive/useful enough to be a "staple fruit," but with that fragrance, I would definitely plant 2 (for pollination?) in a greenhouse (though with that fragrance, it is probably moth pollinated, so you might need to do the pollination yourself with a q-tip if you have them as houseplants or greenhouse plants) if I had one or near a door &/or window if I lived in a suitable climate. (Not sure if it is attacked by nematodes like Gardenia unfortunately is, but there are work-arounds for that.) Edible landscaping is the way to go!
@AlbinoAxolotl
6 жыл бұрын
Erik Johnson Wow I had no idea it was related to gardenia! Now that I look at the flowers I can totally see it. I’ve recently gotten on a fragrant plant kick so the fact that it’s fragrant is swaying me slightly more towards buying it (or two; I haven’t figured out if it’s self fertile. Space is at a premium in my yard so if it’s not that could be a con). Definitely an interesting plant that would be great to have in my collection since I’m in a great place for both subtropicals and gardenia-ish species! (10b, San Diego so it can go outside with my other tropicals and subtropical and hopefully get naturally pollinated!)

Thanks for taste testing this, I have been debating whether to purchase one. I understand they do best in acidic soil, and potted, even though I'm in the subtropical climate it prefers we have pretty alkaline soil, so it would have to remain a potted bush. Not sure if it's going to be worth the trouble.

One of the most pervasive millennialisms has got to be using "notoriety" as if it's a good thing. That actually means that this fruit is notorious. Nice video though. Thanks for sampling that fruit for us. I was also wondering about it. I knew some people spread the pulp on bread but it isn't commonly used. Now I see how small the fruit is.
