Guys, this review is what I noticed and what really stood out to me within the first few days. This is not the full review. I don't think some of you are understanding that. At least the BlackBerry fanboys aren't as they are using it as a reason to jab at me for not mentioning everything they see of value. Chill your beans!

IT GOD DAMM OVERHEATS!!!!!!!! way bad.....i fixed this problem....oddly enough it was the blackberry software itself, i ran 3 separate apps that analyze apps, the "hot" ones were the blackberry apps itself, i deleted or "disabled" them and the overheating vanished by 90%, it now takes a heavy prolonged used like normal phones are, before that it took 2 minutes of use, basic ebay searching or amazon looking around, and the phone would overheat to the point were my palm was sweating....like way hotter it should have been after 2 minuets of use.....took the brightness down by 50%, turned off lift to wake, and other features....it now runs at normal...and my battery life is back to normal, but that took disabling every cool feature it had....i got it for the physical keyboard, and that mainly...and it was on sale....but all the blackberry software/apps have been deleted or disabled, and google search was also guilty of overheating...i came from a iphone 6....the mix of android/blackberry is not seamless....the BB hub was really bad at overheating.... i bought it, so i will use it and i prefer it over my iphone 6 any day, but should have gotten something diffrent...to late now....

Also nice that typing doesn't cover/use half your screen. I won't get the phone but good on Blackberry. Solid attempt from them. It _looks_ nice. Although the fps in games is not good. lol And I am sensitive to that as bad fps can induce migraines for me. lol Edit: oh my.. I have to say something. The lack of detail on the iphone camera.. argh.. The amount of love it gets.. I don't understand it. I think it looks horrible. why does nobody understand that it's actually positive if you feel the warmth of a phone nowadays? it's called heat dissipation. every processor gets warm and even hot, so if you can't feel it it means that the heat is trapped inside, causing overheating. simple physics.

Since it runs warm, could it be possible that it's thermal throttling? Try an experiment in cooling it down to see if that's the case. If not then Blackberry could be throttling the Soc. Like samsung did awhile back. I'm curious to see the results.
@ChuckieV79
9 жыл бұрын
My theory is there are some bug or bugs in the bb os and/or bb apps that could not be solved in time for launch; causing heating issues, app crashes, and others. However they wanted the priv to get this phone to market before the holidays. It was rushed through production and cores were capped as a more or less "bandaid" so phone wouldn't hopefully get too hot and possibly better battery life at the expense of overall performance. This would explain lower benchmarks compared to other phones w same processor and overall inconsistent behavior.

Hi Erica, when you used the passsport was it after its first update 10.3.1 or 10.3.2? I'm uncertain what you referred to as the BlackBerry launcher is actually the BlackBerry launcher (it's definitely not the bb10 style). Mind having a crack at using the launcher by assigning shortcuts to keys? Eg. A longpress of 'o' for 'outsource' emails the company I outsource work to. 'w' composes a text message to my wife 'a' adds an appointment, 'n' adds a note. Basically try and create a shortcut for any communication task you do repetitively and see if you like it. If BlackBerry didn't do that I wouldn't be a BlackBerry user. Hope you like it, thanks.

Do you think you could give me your thoughts on a video I did about the Priv? I'd really like to hear more about your experience and thoughts on the phone as a whole but especially about how much/why you appreciate a physical keyboard. The video is called "Blackberry Priv. An Unusual Phone in Modern Times" As for my thoughts on your question, it's a pretty good phone. Performs noticeably slower than other phones but not unbearably so. I mean, a Samsung S8 will run circles around this phone in any test but if the physical keyboard is a huge selling point for you, you gotta factor that in. And if you aren't expecting the best performance, rather, ok enough performance for most things, you might be pretty happy with this phone. Heating issues minimized from the updates this phone got since this review, I'm pretty sure.

Hi, I'm not a Blackberry fanboy, never had one and even the price here is higher than what you paid. I ordered one nonetheless, the main reason: Security updates. I'm sick of using the "standard" Android choices where you can't safely walk around with wifi enabled or surf without risk of someone opening one of the dozens of unpatched issues your vendor doesn't give you an update for. The extended security features also matter a lot to me. This is the phone I'm using for work and I still consider it *my* phone, not google's or any app vendors'. The keyboard is just a nice bonus - I don't want to work with autosuggestions, since honestly, I want to write what I think, not what the phone suggests based on the few word relations it knows. Thank you a lot for showing this in some depth in the video though - that was helpful.

BlackBerry better ships the Priv WITH wireless charging to The Netherlands(Europe) because Samsung created a real hype when the made wireless charging a standard in the S6/Edge. We even got 2 more extra wireless chargers. Before I got the S6 Edge we never used wireless charging. Now we use it on the S4/S5/Note and Nexus 5. I never used the fast charger that came with the S6 Edge.

Tbh I would buy this even if I don't use the keyboard. It has up to date specs and good design well worth the price. LG G4 has 808 and is plastic, but no one complained about price.

Erica, Thanks for this review! I'm a writer and I'm experiencing some frustration. It took me two weeks to figure out where the recorder was on the Z10, no help online or from BB. Please tell me , where's the voice recorder on this phone?!

I'm sorry but this phone looks beautiful, I know is still the first generation, and the first intent of blackberry and Google, for blackberry fanboys just give it a try, just note blackberry 10 was expected to be good, and didn't have market. I had so many blackberry's phones the last two was the z10 and the q10. Is sad that I have to moved from those beautiful devices but the world cannot wait for Blackberry to optimize applications. If i can change my current phone for sure I will go with this blackberry priv.

Erica! Have you noticed any screen wobbling towards the bottom of the screen near that metal strip? It feels like something is loose inside when the keyboard is tucked under...

Is the performance really better now that the software has been updated? Not to Marshmallow, but a relatively small update that some are saying vastly improves the performance of both the software and physical keyboard. Is it true? I really want this phone, but I'm not spending $700 on a sluggish phone.

I think it is a good phone.. little surprised by the really low benchmarks. you were kind when pointing this out. the extra security will help it sell to corporations and government.. Good luck BlackBerry. I think you are done if this does not work out for you.. hmmm just a thought, I wonder if the extra security is what is affecting benchmarks..

Ive been thinking the same..blackberry might have tweak the android core kernel for security purpose and this in turn affect the app performance.

It looks cool and unique, but surprising to see it overheat/throttle despite using a SD808, and not a SD810. They probably did not optimize it?

HURR DURR 10% tax in Washington... In my country it's 27, so just be happy. In this country a normal "600 dollar" flagship costs 820. Not even gonna guess the Priv, as it's not available here. Reference: iPhone 6S 64 gig edition is 1200 dollars.

Hey +Erica Griffin I know you said you'll be doing another review of the phone soon, but maybe you could also mention the DTek software? And the security side of the phone. Cannot wait to get this phone, would appreciate it if you could (which you mentioned already) let us know how it does with battery life. I love the look of this phone and the screen size seems just right! Starting to hate the edge of my S6 and this edge isnt going round as much so I think it will be more user friendly! :) Thank you.

+Sadiq Rekabi yes it is true that the curve on the screen borders of the Priv is smaller than on the borders of the S6 Edge. Plus the battery indicator makes so much more sense. Regarding the content of the review, there are always two ways of conducting them. Either you start looking at the ads, and the PR stuff, and talk about them, and then talk about what every single other KZitem reviewer has already said. Or you do what Erica prefers, meaning making a video as a technology nerd who likes to film stuff, meaning talking first about what she cares about, and the rest only after if need be. How many reviewers look at the gamut ? Or stroke slowly the back of a smartphone and whisper "oh I like that rubber feel" ? Of course, DTek is something quite different, especially the almost "Firewall like" features like having a popup when an app that has not been explicitly granted, tries to access your contacts database. I'm sure it will be mentioned in the full review (maybe after a challenge ?)

Agreed; on-screen keyboards are faster than physical ones but you just don't get the satisfaction of tactile feedback unless you use real buttons. Also, physical keys allow me to type and look elsewhere at the same time, meaning I can pay attention to where I'm going.

+patriotbarrow I completely understand what you mean. If I look away when typing on an iPhone my words go all haywire then I gotta re-type wasting twice as much time.

The Priv felt great in my hand and looks fantastic but too techie for me as I'm not the most technological person. I'm looking to stay with my BlackBerry (have a Q10) but it's on its last legs. I'm a KZitemr who's trying to make his channel (mostly a hobby) more professional and serious but what BlackBerry would you recommend out of the Leap, Q10, or Z10? I'm looking for a good camera but also something that's good for social media. I don't want to have an abundance of apps on my phone however. Any recommendations?

Nice. I really like the looks of this phone especially the keyboard. But since I'm a new Grandpa (well, 7 months now, but it still feels new) I really wish the camera were better in low light. Great job as usual! ~ Randy Wright ) I have to sign my name now since I changed the name of my channel!)

There doesn't seem to be anything about privacy/security on the phone. I though blackberry was supposed to be a secure platform for businesspeople. BlackBerry has finally made the switch to android but (other than the keyboard) they have failed to set themselves apart from other manufacturers.
