First time i've come across this channel. Nice introduction showing the craft from beginner to master in the time! I've been learning under the instruction of a highly competent smith at 2 weekly intervals for the past 42 months with enforced breaks due to covid. I haven't got as far as fire welding yet (but hope to start early next year) My own experience is that as a beginner you really need to learn how and where the fire heats your steel and how to control that before you can shape it at the anvil to meet your expectations. Very well stated in the vid, and I have a load of failures teaching me by example that this is true. I added my sub straight way after watching.

Usually I get mad at KZitem blacksmithing videos. This one significantly less so. Those are the key operations, I can't argue (except of course with the myriad finer points, unnecessarily). To anyone watching this if the book reads like the video it's probably a decent buy for someone starting out.

Hello, I’ve been wondering if there a word for long swords (or blacksmithing in general) that are designed to be more ornamental/aesthetic?

Cinematic? Decorative. False. Untempered.

Thanks for the video. May I ask if just heating up steel to red or even white alter it's shape? Even for more precise work, something like 0.01mm? Can it change 0.01 mm by just heating it up?

the simple answer is no, but even leaving a piece of flat bar in the sun all day will cause it to swell on a microscopic level - but for practical purposes, again, the simple answer is no, it will not significantly/visibly change shape.

It can, but only for very precise work. It is possible to shape a make part that is just barely too large to fit in a hole, and use heat to get the hole loose enough to assemble the parts achieving a tight fit by the time the parts reach room temperature.
