As an aspiring bond villain this video has taught me that I should provide my would-be executees with a colored vest that matches the target I use to signal feeding time. I hope to use this knowledge to avoid having to awkwardly stand around as the enemy spy is splashing around in a tank full of entirely disinterested sharks. As a sign of gratitude, I shall name one of my sharks Clint when the time comes.

Um, Clint? It _is_ correct that the, "Sharks must swim to breathe," thing isn't quite true, it isn't false either. The vast majority of sharks can breathe just fine whithout swimming, but there are about 2 dozen of them that are true obligate ram ventilators, meaning that they actually do require effectively constant motion in order to breathe, including the Mako, Whale, and Great White.

Honestly, I'd give these a 5 for hardiness relative to the fact that they're predatory saltwater fish. Everything you've mentioned about them is pretty much the typical saltwater aquarium + predatory fish stuff. You'd have the same requirements in that regard for a seabass, grouper or lionfish, maybe a bit more strict than those since sharks tend to be a bit more sensitive to water chemistry but that's it.

10 years ago I saw a reef shark (not sure what species) in a local fish shop. It looked like it was 4ish feet long and house in a long 500ish gallon tank (not a good final tank size) The shark was $1500. This shop also had nautiloids.

Also should be mentioned that you can't just use normal table salt for any saltwater creature, you instead need special aquarium marine salt.

In all my years of watching shark week and consuming as much shark content as possible, and even diving with sharks… no one - NO ONE - has ever described shark posture or reading sharks quite like you just did. My interest in marine biology has been high since I was a child, and living in Florida, got to see lots of marine life (and not just at sea world) and I appreciate info like this- considering how few people would consider a marine shark for a pet, you give such fantastic info!

Sharks are pretty cool. Know what's even better than sharks though? Imagine a creature so bad-ass, it considers great white sharks to be nothing more than prey. That's right, orcas! Would love to see a video on orcas, or other cetaceans.
@veggiedragon1000
3 жыл бұрын
It would be a good opportunity to give a 0, since orcas should really never be taken from the wild. I'd like to see Clint ragging on Seaworld for 20 minutes, but that might be a pretty heavy video. :(
@elifia
3 жыл бұрын
@@veggiedragon1000 Oh, I definitely agree with that, orcas don't really thrive in captivity. On top of that, they're sapient animals, with intelligence equivalent to that of a human child. Capturing wild orcas should be as illegal as kidnapping a child would be. I'd still like to see a normal video on orcas, but there should definitely be a segment on the morality of capturing wild orcas if Clint does decide to make such a video.
@veggiedragon1000

@@elifia Yes, exactly, just wanted to say since Clint often talks about the viability of animals in captivity. I also think Orcas are pretty cool. Their hunting strategies are so fascinating, and they actually almost never attack humans in the wild, at all. If Clint were to talk about orcas, maybe he could go in a boat out to sea and try to spot some in the wild. I bet he would be really excited. :3

What a fun video. We used to catch these sharks when surf fishing in Galveston. They were little bitty guys - but still thrilling to get to handle a shark while getting them off the line. Fun memories

Are you sure you had tiger shark jaws? The tooth shape looked a bit off, especially the lower jaw. Tiger sharks are one of the few sharks that have sawing teeth on the top and bottom jaw. The jaw you had looks more like a lemon or bull shark jaw.

Definitely do some more videos on smaller, keepable sharks like the bamboo and epaulette sharks. Also, I wouldn't personally keep blacktip reef sharks so much as condition a wild population to handling and feeding for study, identification and to ensure their health was at peak condition if it were up to me and I was living where these sharks were native, kind of like how Caribbean reef sharks and tiger sharks in the Bahamas have become so used to handling and feeding to the point where they have actually learned to recognize specific people they have formed decades-long bonds that allow divers to remove hooks from their mouths without being bitten. A perfect example of this is shark tourism operator Jim Abernathy of Florida, who has bonded with a 15-foot female tiger shark named Emma, and with whom he has maintained a 20+ year friendship. As for your video you want to do on the great white shark (my favorite shark, too), it should interest you to know that the longest time a great white was kept in captivity was 198 days at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This shark was a pup (one of six baby great whites the aquarium held and rehabilitated) that was released shortly after she began eating her tank-mates (as baby great whites eat other sharks, rays, fish and small cephalopods at that age. These sharks are definitely impossible to keep as adults, though. They live more than 72+ years as adults, don't mature until they turn 27-33 years old for males and females, respectively, are highly migratory and oceanic during certain parts of the year, can dive to incredible depths of 3,000+ feet, and their diet is so varied as an adult (tuna, seals, dolphins, giant and Humboldt squid, and even living, grown humpback whales and whale sharks just as examples), that keeping them in captivity as a full-grown animal would be unfeasible for even the best-equipped aquarium. Also, mako sharks fare even worse than great whites in captivity: the record for the longest time in captivity for a mako is 5 days before it died.

Heck yeah! I'd love to see some videos on different sharks. I remember as a kid I really wanted to be a marine biologist with a focus on sharks and whales; which I s'pose would be an ichthylogist/cetologist. Anyways, I'm digressing, but seeing a vid on Great Whites and any other shark would be delightful
