I've got one of these, I will never forgive horizon for the way they discontinue parts supply because it is absolutely my favorite helicopter to fly, crashed it once and spent months getting parts and putting it back together, actually just got it back up recently. Video is on my channel about it @the heli guys

You can’t expect them to make every part for every heli they’ve ever made, it sucks but it is what it is

I have this helicopter and I have flown mine a lot, I will warn you that the capacitors sticking out of the front of the stock ESC are only secured by the solder pins of the capacitors. The vibration of the helicopter will cause the capacitors to just break off during flight. I had to open up the ESC and solder in new capacitors when this happened to mine and my father's 500 3D. I have added hot glue around the base of the new capacitors to keep them from breaking off again. Modern ESCs have capacitor holders that solve this issue.

Make sure you checkout and look into the recall on this heli. The tail grips are defective and will eventually explode if you don't get the updated set. They used to ship you free replacements. Not sure if they still do. 500X has the same recall (same part), so they were shipped for quite a long time with the tail blade grips that fail.

Hey MangZ, another great video mate! Would you mind sharing any setup variants not listed in the manual? I ask because after setting up a new model on a DX8, the swash does not respond to pitch as expected. Basically, when adding pitch the swash tilts exponentially to the left?

I’m not aware of any setup variants, I set up my DX8 without any issues. Are you positive that your servos are connected into the correct ports on the receiver?

Just found your channel. You speak REALLY WELL, lighting is good, sound is good (VERY important!). I have an old Trex 450 SE that I bought used way back in 2009. Haven't flown it a lot cuz of opportunity, and I've also got some kind of weird problem where the motor cuts out for a SPLIT SECOND mid-flight, and I have NO IDEA what the heck is wrong with it. (I grounded it after it did it to me two or three times in ONE SHORT flight!) I suspect MAYBE the motor is bad because sometimes the ESC beeps are ALMOST INAUDIBLE? I also haveta fly it in a very small park (don't have a car), and it's really too big (dangerous!) to be SAFELY flown there! I also 'adjusted' the tail (it was PERFECTLY fine BEFORE!), cuz I suspected the other guy didn't set it up right, and now I can't get it to work right. I really should've LEFT IT ALONE! Oh well, that's me! If it ain't broke, 'fix' it UNTIL IT *IS*! Anyway, LOVE seeing these old helis, cuz they were CURRENT when I got into the hobby back in 2009. No flybarless heads, no FBL controllers, just pure, UGLY, CLUNKY flybarred mechanical gyro goodness! Thanks for the GREAT look back! Cheers!

I appreciate the complements! Good ol’ Align, I have never owned a T-Rex but I would love too. The 450 platforms are so popular and well proven. If I had to guess, I would think it would be your ESC cutting out, not the motor. I say that just because brushless motors are so simple and basic, if they look and feel okay, they are probably fine. The ESC can be the cause of many many different problems unseen to the eye. As far as setting up a tail, if you can find the manual for your tail gyro, it should be fairly easy to reset up your tail, the process is usually pretty friendly. These old flybar helis are definitely not as clean and pretty as the newer stuff, but I enjoy having them around for their old style, not having to setup a flybarless controller is odd, it through me for a loop since I’m only familiar with flybarless!

@@mangzrc Thank you SO MUCH for the tips! I never would've suspected the ESC cuz it's an Align and was SUPPOSEDLY brand new (it wasn't originally installed in the heli when I bought it; came with a Scorpion). I don't have anyone to help me with the hobby, so I've had to try to figure EVERYTHING out on my own. Yes, I printed off the manual for the gyro (Futaba GY-401). I TRIED to skim it, but the printing is so frickin' TINY, I gave up. You've reminded me to look at it AGAIN! I've also watched a MILLION videos on YT so I UNDERSTAND what I'm SUPPOSED to do, but it's not working. Obviously I'm MISSING something!

@@TechNoPhobiaGirl When I first got into helis back in 2019, I was pretty much on my own as well. The Blade BNF stuff was great for starting out, but when I decided to assemble and setup a kit heli on my own, oh boy was it trial by fire. I basically scrounged around the internet to teach my self how everything works, I eventually succeeded and now have a pretty vast knowledge on helis, but it was a rough and frustrating journey. As far as your tail gyro, if you are missing something, you will eventually figure it out if you keep trying. I had to take multiple breaks when building my first kit because I was stuck, but I always came back to it until it was done. If you replace your ESC, I highly recommend Castle, they are very easy to setup and your sure to have absolutely no problems with the setup due to the vast information on the internet. I only use Castle.

@@mangzrc I guess there are a LOT of us (MOST of us?) who get into the hobby with no one to help us. That's why YT/internet are soooo amazing! Castle, eh? OK, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! I'm of very limited means, so I tend to buy from China in order to spend as little as possible. If Castle is an American brand then it'll be expensive and probably won't be available here in Canada. I bought a cheapo ESC from HobbyKing in China for my little HK-250 and it's total garbage! It doesn't even have a soft-start option! I hate that thing! Fortunately, my 250 has been mostly disassembled all winter so it's not really a problem, until I put it back together. I also suspect the tail gyro is faulty but I don't know if you can even BUY a tail gyro anymore. I guess you probably can, but it's gotta be TINY to fit my 250.

Believe it or not I had to see kind of scenario as you. I was on eBay and I sure blade 503D used. So I contacted the guy and I said it’s a beautiful helicopter I wish I had it. So the guy contacted me back and asked me how much money do you have? He was charging almost $400. I said to him to get it I don’t have enough we spoke for about an hour going back-and-forth text message so then the question comes up and said what I said to him I just just enough for something cheap he asked me again how much money do you have and I could hear the anger in his voice like he was trying to tell me something that I wasn’t picking up on. So I told him I all I have Is $175. He then said to me give it to your helicopter I said are you serious? He said yup he says I see how much you want it and I know what it’s like to want something and not have it. I can’t tell you how happy I was. He even sent it to me FedEx second day. When I opened the box it was literally brand new not a scratch. If this guy flew it twice that would’ve been a lot
