in defense of the BR 2039 short, well---it was a short film. Just like in other media format for example, it would be too boring to see a 10minute youtube video with just 5 cuts, focusing mainly on a person talking endlessly. Tho, I'd agree that the ambient-place-making was a bit lack-luster, it could be attributed to the editing budget and target audience-format. I believe it was not released commercially, and so since the studio would not profit from it, they could've decided that a less cinematic output was sufficient.

I remember sitting at the edge of my seat throughout the entire film even when there was not a lot of action happening but the beauty and the sounds and the acting and music and cinematography just overwhelmed me and when the credits began to roll I felt like I had spent the past two and a half hours on a rollercoster that left me breathless and overwhelmed. I just sat there until the end of the credits, blankly staring at the screen, out of breath, not knowing what to think and the first thought I had when standing up and leaving the room was when I was going to see it again. And I did and it was not better the second time because there was nothing to get better from the first place.

TGS TGS What a fucking joke. Give it up man. You must be one of those movie-goers who don't care about great writing, directing and a compelling story that actually goes places and explores very deep and rich themes while being a brilliant, gorgeously shot, directed and acted piece of art, nah you probably just want to see explosions and fucking robots that transform into cars and just loud noises and destruction and coolness. It's incredible that you and so many other poor people don't have enough patience or at least the ability to pay attention for two hours and 45 minutes, who can't appreciate and enjoy the brilliance that is this film just because there's a lot of silence, a lot of personal moments that take the time they need to flesh out the story and characters, a lot of subplots that are still entirely necessary and interesting, many moments where it's just Rian Gosling sitting somewhere and flying while this unsettling music plays in the background accompanied by incredible sound design that all together create the superb atmosphere that we got, all that instead of cool action and fun and jokes and entertainment. I saw it twice because that's what this film needs, it needs to be seen at least twice to properly understand everything and it's just pure joy to see such a good film over again.
@LulzTVx

From a movie perspective (sound design, directing, editing, etc) I really am sure 2049 is the greatest movie ever made. Almost all the people in the world are obeddient dogs who have to say all the big movies from the 70's or 60's are the greatest blah, blah, blah. But I really don't think this way. For example 2001 a space odyssey is a big incoherent boring mess with no plot that does nothing but show the viewers almost static images of monkeys and people flying ships for 3 hours!!!!! But blade runner 2049 is special. It has something unexplainable to it that makes it such a cinematic masterpiece. And TSG, you idiot. Even a 13 year old like me (yes I am 13, no lie) can apreciate such an amazing arthouse film as this. Please delete your fucking replie and go watch your marvel or michael bay films or whatever you like.

I'm re-watching Blade Runner 2049 at the moment in my breaks and I have to say this film is about as perfect a movie I have seen since....well....I cant even remember. Probably The Two Towers or Gladiator but even those absolute classics appealed to the crowd. "Win the crowd and you will win your freedom." Well, blockbusters aside, Blade Runner 2049 doesn't feel like a blockbuster or even a film appealing to the masses. Blade Runner 2049 is a work of cinematic art par excellence.
@drakenfist

100% agree. Those two films I also love, but I knew when I saw this film that it wasn't going to be easily understood. It's moody, its deliberate, scenes go on for way longer than they should (in the eyes of the general audience). But I loved every moment of it..and this is from someone who never really understood the appeal of the original (and still don't). I didn't care for it, it looked nice..but I couldn't emotionally invest..and it felt too simplistic..is Deckard a replicant?, was basically the films only message. This one was like "what does that even mean?..what does it mean to be a replicant?..to be human?" By the time I got to the end, I felt teary and fulfilled.

zimThuet Man I already commented this twice but whatever here it goes again Plot holes in the movie: Why the hell can Rachel have a baby? There is no glimpse that she was created for it, the movie doesnt even takes a moment to explain that, they just say "It was miracle" and move on (A miracle in a science fiction movie, what a move) they just inserted that so Deckard can appear in which reminds me: Why is he and the bald guy at the beggining alive? The previous nexus lived only 4 years, which is why the rebel replicants travel to earth in the previous movie, TO FIND LONGEVITY, that was the whole plot, but I guess a wizard decided they can grow old, who gives a fuck about the rules. And theres more

Mate im not even over with the flaws of this movie. Because if I was maybe wrong with that (I'll see the movie again and check that out but as far as I know K was looking for him because he was and older Nexus model), this film is unbelievably over exposed, you barely have to use your brain because the characters, fits or not, will explain absolutely everything, an example: K looking through the archives, at the moment he found the date it was so cool because we've already seen his flashback, so you start thinking "oh so is HE the baby?" but no, his holographic companion has to point out "hey isnt that what you remembered as a kid, what a coincidence, so you're actually the child", and the next half hour of the film you already know what is going to happen. Thanks Christopher Nolan. But to turn this, they put a super plot twist where he is NOT the child, not that this turn is something bad, but the device they use to explain this is lazy as fuck: The revolution leader comes out of NOWHERE, saying not only that the replicants knew all this time about the baby (Wasnt robin wright's character worried about this? If they knew all along why havent they do something already, what the hell are they waiting? to harrison ford have an emotional chat with her daughter?), but to tell them "hey you're not jesus christ, now go do our work for some reason" and they NEVER appear again, also the only purpose they serve in this movie is just to reveal the great mistery, I think I've seen that device in a kids show before. How about the super evil cliche character Jared Leto plays? The blonde fuck in the original had a great arc and you could feel for him, but this guy has the most blatant reason " I just want to rule the universe or some star wars crap", in addition to the BORING evil sidekick that has no purpose or self consciousness that could fit in any Die Hard movie as the super powerful minion. And I think the biggest insult is that in 3 (three) hours of movie they couldnt close the evil guy or the replicant revolution for the sake of making a sequel (already confirmed by Ridley fellas). I cant wait for this film to become a super hollywood franchise supported by Rotten Tomatoes™ and over hyped by fans who find any excuse to consider something deep, this video is the proof of that. And not that I think it was a shitty film, it was okey but for fuck sake, just because Rotten tomatoes gave it a 9/10 (the same webpage that LOVED the last jedi for some reason) doesnt means its a perfect movie.

CMBYN and Blade Runner 2049 will be movies from 2017 that people talk about in twenty years. (and maybe Phantom Thread; haven't seen it yet). They are both arthouse movies, zen-like meditations on how beauty and love give our lives meaning. They stressed mood over exposition. BladeRunner was all about what it "felt" like to be a slave. CMBYN was what it "felt" like to be in love. For me, they were transportive experiences - like I had lived other lives beyond my own and come back when the curtain fell with knowledge and wisdom I could use in my own life.

Bought DVD today. Watched with rapt amazement. Currently own every edition of Blade Runner and watched it in May of 1982 in Gettysburg PA at the cinema in the old International Village. This movie entirely lived up to expectations. Dreaded seeing it, worried about how poorly it would be done. Deserves an Oscar in my book.

Wonderful post. Thank you. Blade Runner 2049 is my favorite film of the year. Glad I viewed it in a true IMAX presentation. It was glorious. Although watching the 4K UHD blu ray on my 65" tv won't compare to my theater experience, I'm still excited. Everyone should support this film when it's released on blu ray on Jan. 16.

I love that you compared the directing styles of Luke Scott and Denis Villeneuve. 2048: Nowhere to Run suffers from the exact same problems as 2036: Nexus Dawn, and watching them both after seeing 2049 for the first time just made me appreciate Villeneuve's (and Deakins') brilliant understanding of visuals even more. You definitely pointed out some things I didn't notice, though. Nice video, keep up the good work!

Well said. It is quite shocking how little consideration BR2049 is receiving in the academy circles, while extremely lesser titles such as The Last Jedi are. It's probably the best film in quite a few years, and I completely agree it already feels like a classic. The entire theater was in awe when it ended.

BR2049 for sure is a technical masterpiece. The cinematigraphy, useage of CGI and color, cut, soundtrack and especially the amazing sound design just blew me away! Everytime a gun was fired i startled. This is how guns in movies HAVE to sound like! The only two things i could criticise in that aspect are the blend of CGI and camera footage in a later scene (people who saw the film know what i mean) and some of the pacing throughout but especially in the middle of the film. Wouldn't be surprised if it sweeped all technical categories aswell as best direction at the Oscars. When it comes to actual plot i feel like it is quite good, but not exceptional. Not because the themes and plot developments aren't interesting, but rather because a lot of these things could have been communicated more clearly to the viewer. BR2049 is first and foremost a character study, which the first BR tried to be aswell, but failed at that if you ask me. For me it is a really good thing when films convey their message in a subtil way, but i feel like BR2049 was overstepping a line a few times here and there, which for me got to a point at which i wasn't really able to enjoy some key plot developments aswell as the ending as much as i wanted to. Really missed the big emotional punch which the ending of the first BR provided too. I feel like you can't fully appreciate BR2049's story without a second watch which i haven't had the opportunity to do yet but really look forward to!

This film was unfairly neglected, worse so than the original when superior: flawless in sound deign, CGI, cinematography, acting and narrative. The only complaint I have is the slow, long pace and this deterred much cinema attendance, but the artistic merit is irrefutable - it is a classic that should be appreciated with the highest filmmaking awards as compensation for the public's negligence.

Agree with you.. The public is so stupid, they go to a film because the actor is pretty, and complain about the time of 3 hours of the movie. Wtf, did u not see the fucking time before u go to the cinema? its sad

Not sure your criticism of Scott’s approach to his “short” are warranted. You can’t really compare the setup of a larger space with 6 actors in it to a smaller space with 2...or the fact that one scene is 3 minutes longer than the other. They simply can’t be shot in the same manner since they have completely different cinematic story points to convey. One is a self-contained, independent prologue, while the other is a 1:30 long scene that is a piece of a two & half hour film. Your choice for comparison in this case is really apples & oranges. Stylistically, Scott likes to use a lot of cuts...it’s just “different” - not better, not worse. Plus pointing out that you “hear rain & don’t see it” as a negative in the Scott piece...dude, it’s a short - the guy did it on day work, it’s not going to merit the CGI of an external effects shot (for a scene without a window, or an exterior, I might add...) You want to make a comparison, go ahead - but pick a scene of similar length, in a similar space, with only 2 actors and then tell us about the finer points of “how Scott or Villeneuve handled it better”. (How about same Villeneuve 2049 scene vs. Scott’s Leon/Holden Voight-Kampff from the original?)

Browntable I stand corrected on which Scott directed the piece and obviously a comparison to something shot by “Ridley” would not be in order. But that said, I stick to all of my other points.

I had heard that the cinematographer stated that 2D was the preferred viewing so I saw the movie 3 times alternating between Dolby and IMAX and passed on 3D. I just watched the 3D Blu-ray and it was amazing! The afterthought 3D rendering added so much depth to the already beautiful cinematography. No forced 3D effects. Just wonderful depth almost like watching it again on a 90 inch mini stage in my living room. Check it out!!!

Don't know what it is about his films. Like Arrival, if you sit back, open all of your senses and every pore in your skin you still feel that there is more to be absorbed. Like there is another level, if you could just tune in. This was a masterpiece, in every sense of the word.
