I went on Pokemon Showdown with an all-fire type team for a Generation 1 battle and came up against a pretty typical overpowered team, and beat it! The opponent's movesets weren't optimal but even so this is a huge accomplishment since fire is bad in Gen 1. In fact, Moltres is only even viable as a wild card choice. The only mistake I believe I made was using fire blast against Moltres for a few turns, slash would have done slightly more damage.
Team breakdown: Rapidash is the fastest fire type so I lead with it, hoping to paralyze with body slam and free-swap out using fire spin. Moltres has the highest special so I try to increase its speed with agility before hitting hard first with fire blast. Ninetales is probably the MVP, confuse ray comes in clutch and it has the third most powerful fire blast, plus fire spin, and toxic can be good against pokes like Chansey. Magmar's stats aren't good but submission is really useful against Chansey and Snorlax, and psychic is there for more coverage. Flareon has the highest attack and second highest special and access to fire spin so it's solid. Charizard is unique in that it's immune to ground moves and knows earthquake. Arcanine is not on the team because it brings nothing needed to the table, Rapidash is faster and hits nearly as hard physically and more importantly has access to fire spin. Arcanine would work in place of Flareon but it's kind of a toss up... Arcanine's speed is the only real advantage there at the expense of weaker special and physical attack and lack of fire spin. If you use Arcanine you better hope for crits and paralysis.
