I fear as he gets older, his supreme talent and desire to push boundaries will get more and more in the way of him playing music in an enjoyable way. Let’s be honest, this version has little groove and isn’t as enjoyable to listen to or experience as the original. It happens to some of the greatest musicians. Anyone still listening to Bob Dylan? One of the greatest songwriters in western music is still alive and making music. But virtually none of us care anymore. Not trying to start an argument with anyone here - but I’ll bet if the fans at the show were privately polled, the vast majority would prefer Blake would have played that (and his other music) in the more traditional and tangible fashion.

I am probably just the minority but I grew tired of the original. It was interesting and served its purpose but I feel his other compositions from that record held up much better. Blake has been exploring the jazz genre and this version is a natural progression. Keeping it fresh.

if he played his songs the way you expect him to, he would've never progressed from his debut. further his explorations in jazz did not lead to unenjoyable music on mutable set or jelly road. trying to contain his creativity to the boundaries he has had in his past, is a disservice to all of us. only if he consistently challenges his own understanding of music can he deliver great things. just like fiona apple, leonard cohen and countless others, let him do his thing. listen to the music you like and skip the stuff you don't and just be happy to know he will never create bland trash and surprise you every time; in good or bad. (and yes people do listen to the new bob dylan stuff. triplicate or modern times are good albums for example.)

You're talking about music as pure entertainment vs pushing the medium forward. Music needs to progress. Someone as talented and ambitious as Blake Mills shouldn't be held back on how or what he wants to play. If everyone just "played it straight", we'd never have Jazz, rock or most genres people like in 2024.

@@ebifurai415 Fair points. But people do come to shows and do follow musicians primarily for the enjoyment the music brings. And if progress is a journey that provides a cool new sound, entertainment, etc - then great. But not all does. If an artist reduced their music down to mere droning, people won’t enjoy it and it’s arguably not pushing anything forward. I’m merely pointing out that many very talented musicians, particularly as they age and leave their golden era of writing / producing, tend to create more and more bland music. I’m unsure all the reasons why. I’m not trying to insult Blake (or anyone). He’s actually my favorite guitarist. But it’s OK to be bummed out from a musician’s modern take on a beloved song, right?

@@jeffgough It makes sense and I'm right there with you. If someone got into Blake for his slide playing they'd surely be bummed on his last couple records. I think being an artist myself its more fun for me to see where people can take their art and music than to stick with what they are good at. That being said if I go see a musician and they either don't play the hits, or play weird versions I'm just as bummed as you are. Sometimes it's really nice to hear the songs we know the way we know them. Especially since memory and music are so linked and we all develop such strong connections with specific songs. Still though, to circle back I think I really dig seeing where Blake takes his music, even if I get bummed when he won't play "Don't Tell Our Friends About Me" at shows anymore.
