My little funky opinion about the Superbowl *Long Post alert* *I don't believe that anyone can dispute that Wayne is one of the greatest artists that has graced the industry. When he was on top...he dominated and really helped to seal the spot for southern rappers in the industry. With that being said...today's Wayne is not the Wayne we had 10-15 years ago. He has openly admitted to having health issues, and his performances lately have been a little subpar. The superbowl stage is one of the largest platforms that an artist can perform on, and it requires an energy and stamina that I don't think Wayne has at the moment, and to think that he should be handed the superbowl spot just because he's from that city will set him up to be on a platform that he may not be ready for. *From a business standpoint, Kendrick is literally the hottest male artist popping right now, and regardless of how anyone on either side feels about how he got this type of popularity, he's STILL had the hottest song of the summer, that I also believe will recieve a Grammy. The numbers that Amazon did from his pop-out concert were amazing. Of course, his name would come up about the superbowl performance. This is about viewership, and Kendrick will more likely draw viewers (from both sides, because let's face it, people want to see what songs he's gonna perform). Plus, he's already been on the Super Bowl platform... so he has a little bit of experience there. *While I don't believe the politics narrative is completely irrelevant, I agree that Wayne and Jay-Z don't have a beef...however, there have been ill feelings swarming around about Birdman and Jay-Z...and now apparently Nicki. I think THEY made it about politics, not necessarily Wayne. I don't even think most people who claim outrage over this are truly mad that it wasn't Wayne... They are using it not being Wayne to mask whatever dislike they have for Jay-Z. *From a cultural standpoint, I think it was very low for people to take a moment that was earned by Kendrick and make it about someone else. No one can say that Kendrick hasn't been killing it all summer...and when Wayne was topping charts, Kendrick gave that man his flowers. Kendrick has always been for the culture, and he does deserve this spot.
