I revisited Blame when i saw the movie on netflix I knew of it because i read it as a kid, but didn't understand anything beyond all the cool fights I think the original story, at the end, implies a sort of "natural" cycle in the world, where we witnessed the end of Killy's journey and the start of another, mirroring the beginning. His job is to find the gene, which is hard because most humans are mutated or too genetically distant from thier ancestors (the orginals with the NTG). Though its implied thousands of years have passed, the orginals with the genes must've been living in a technological utopia, being able to create anything so long as they have a digital temple and access to the sphere. But something happened and they lost control of what they created. Maybe it has something to do with the inherent flaws in human nature compounded with the pursuit of perfection in an imperfect world. It's left vague, only that a virus or calamity had tainted this world. However, at multiple points in the story, we see life in varying forms of evolution, from the primitive to the ultra high-tech (one thing that makes me think this is the varying heights of certain characters, which some science theorizes that huamnity will evolve to be of taller and lighter builds). And, again, at multiple points, nothing is every truly gone or dead in the traditional sense. Someone or something can be recovered or fixed if they have backup information and capable machinery. Things get lost or destroyed often, as you see when Killy's weapon of choice is essentially an anti-anything canon. Even so, life persists, and the megastructures and their systems continue to work. Somewhere, the gene exists and persists too. A lot of characters know of Killy, even though he doesn't recall much about anything, not his weapon or the very clothes on his back. And i mention that because there's the scene where he comes to in that human colony and has the "new" ability to scan things. This information is relayed to us when he looks at his arm and comments on the material of his suit. And there's this trend he undergoes of getting absolutely wrecked, only to heal. Our introduction to Seu demonstrates how any physical damage can be mended, but messes with thier memory/pysche. It's hard to grasp how much Killy really knows at any given time. In the very end, Killy, already horrible damaged from an off scene fight, takes a shot in the head and lapses into a deep sleep until the damage is mended. When he comes to and sees the globe, does he remember what it is and how he got it, or does he only understand that he needs to protect and deliver the genes? Seu doesn't recognize his own hand at first glance, but remembers how to fight. Killy must have something similar that compels him to search for the genes and bring humanity back to where it was. Vast stretches of time occurred during the instance of the story, so i don't think it's a stretch to assume the story world can't sort of reset itself, reestablishing buildings, facilities, and entire civilizations of people given enough time. Lastly, there's that excerpt from that book Killy had: "When the Earth, cold and calm, clears, a shadow climbed the hill." Killy may be a shadow of himself at the end, but he knows he has a mission. So he continues his journey, climbing the megastructure. Maybe he's made this climb before and fallen, but he persists. To me, it's a story of hope.

It's funny, you'd think this manga would go perfectly with some spaced-out dark ambient soundtrack. But when you read it, you realize the story is actually like 90% balls to the wall action. I tried the same thing as you, but ended up switching to some crazy drum & bass instead :D

how about these are not the only children Killy has been taking with him. At some point he stop the City expansion, and he keep wandering around to keep this expansion in check. And in case the silicon creature start to build a culture and slowly change back to a "more human" being, Killy can still save/help those. Giving enough time and encounters, he can change his opinion too.

This is a great video. Just read the manga a few days ago and I had my own interpretation and idea of what the moral of the story was, but I needed a refresher to make sure I didn't miss anything. Very happy for those small explained details like the tower being destroyed causing PCell's body to become disfigured when she tried to reform. Made those moments a little bit more special to me.

Also just a nitpick, the master edition's would have been better to go off of, simply because they have better translations. Some of the translations in your version are poor in certain parts, leading to misinterpretations by the reader. For example, -the name "the Authorities" for "The Safeguard" is a mistranslation. -"The Administration" is NOT the same as the Safeguard. and are Killy's allies. basically you have 3 completely different factions at work here not including humanity: -Safeguards (bad), -The Administration (good), and silicon life (also bad). All factions are decentralized to some degree.

The world and tone are awesome but that story is rough. It's "and then" story telling with "post-it note" conflicts. All coincidence and happenstance. But man that world is sick. Someone could take it and make a nice tight story with a plot and characters, growth and real conflicts. It's got so much potential.

Hey I love this video. you speak clearly and summarize details efficiently and in a fun way too. This must have taken a lot of work and passion. Hats off to you man. Easy Like & Sub. However I want to admit I was a little thrown by the title "diving deep". I thought it was going to be more analysis than summarization. A deep dive makes me think we are going into the particular and more subtle details of each Log that teach us about the city, or Killy, as a whole, and Nihei's style as an author to convey information to us. The first "Ex-Log" for example tells its story without any dialogue and shows us some of Killy's personality, morality, as well as the conflict with silicon life. thanks again for the free hour of entertainment!

Truly, a great but difficult to understand manga. My spoiler understanding is as follows. I always saw it as a commentary of what happens when technological development outpaces social and moral development. The silicon life were hunted down and killed for simply existing (they are not some innately evil lifeform as was seen in Blame!^2 by the way) as well as any surviving unevolved human minority that lacked the control gene. Then the prequel cult took away evolved humanities ability to control the AI via their virus, eliminating the net terminal gene from the population. The result? Ironically, the system that the evolved humans in power (with the net terminal gene) had put in place came back to bite them, because they were now seen as "illegal" and "squatters" by their own AI and killed, much like the silicon life that they had been trying to genocide. It's been a while, so my memory may be off.

I could write an essay on all the information I’ve gleamed on Nihei’s works over the years. Blame! is one of the best mangas ever, my favorite. All of his works are great. Watching how his storytelling evolved over time alongside his art was something to behold. The concepts he throws at the reader while letting the imagination run in infinite spirals, asking the reader to really think. Damn. I’m somewhere around 70% sure of how the critical contingent weapon (the GBE) works. I’m around 90% sure on history of the world, but there are yet still unknowns. Scouring in any sources or references or subsequent works to fill in gaps and piece the picture together. I read in the art book Nihei released that silicon creatures were a divergence of humans, no longer human. I and others have theorized the main character in Noise could’ve been the first silicon creature (after the events leading to the books ending), but this is not confirmed. The art book also references the last known size of the megastructure to be equivalent to 43 Au. But the manga also states its’ true size is unknown. There is a plethora of information out there, but leaving it mostly open to interpretation was one of Nihei’s smartest ideas. Noise is supposed to be a prequel, with Blame! 2 and NGE (Netsphere engineer manga) serving as sequels. A question I’ve always posed among all his works (or most) is the variable of TOA heavy industries. It seems to be a common variable in many. Are they all connected in some way? This remains… unclear. And that keeps me coming back to read them, all of them. Nihei is a manga genius, I have mad respect for him. He was an architect and it shows. Damn it shows! I’ve discussed the many topics over years in different media platforms. Teamspeak, discord, here. And as I said, there are still unknowns. Leaving the allure of the mystery to the reader. Allowing the imagination to run wild. I love this manga. I love that as time still passes, people still discover this and also admire it. It, and Nihei’s many other works, have been a big influence in my life. I will likely still praise this series into my old age. I’ve read and owned this stuff for near a third of my life, I’m nearly 40 now. This stuff was sci-fi gold. As of note, I am writing this as I am watching. I see things mentioned that I have spoken of too. This… this is why I love this series. It goes hard. And people love that. A manga that has considerably much less dialogue than most. Proving art has no bounds. Thank you Nihei. Thank you. Nice video btw Boog.

I loved reading this comic, but man, it makes zero sense. The plot has no pacing. There is no arc, the characters don't meaningfully change or grow, there's not much for you to really grab onto on an interpersonal / psychological level. The whole conceit is totally cryptic and virtually impossible to understand, just from reading the text (and not the author's/publishers comments packaged alongside the volumes). It's sort of just a bunch of action scenes stringed together, laced with all these cryptic comments and clues about the lore, and you're often totally unsure if you're even following human characters who have a mind / feelings you'd understand.
