I actually used to work in the Xbox 360 repair center and one thing I wanted to point out is that when the Xbox 360 overheats, the motherboard tends to warp a little bit which causes the CPU to not touch the heatsink properly causing it to heat up even more. The best way to fix that is to replace the heatsink screws with bolts and tighten it up as tight as you can without cracking the board. The "gunk/glue" they were talkin about is ArcticSilver heatsink paste. And yes, that is rubbing alcohol

That "glue" that was on the CPU was called thermal paste. It helps keep the CPU from overheating. I really hope you reapplied before putting the heat sink back on. Plus you shouldn't be handling electronics without being properly grounded. Any amount of static electricity will ruin the motherboard. So... yeah.

As long as you touch the right things, being grounded isn’t necessary. I always ground myself before dealing with my electonics though because my shit is expensive and in the very tiny chance that static electricity will mess it up, it’ll be a huge problem.

The two red lights was actually ok if you have no other option. It just means the console is overheating. You're intentionally overheating the new thermal grease application so that it melts slightly into a solder point that can be used to verify proper cooling in the future.

The gunk on the heatsink is called thermal paste. To get rid of it you just use thermal paste remover (or rub it off well enough). BUT, if you can do this, you should probably go build a decent computer and save the money from having both a console and a pc.

Same for me. I had a 360 that my friend got from a pawn shop (so its already the most likely to have problems) and it never failed on me once. It made funny noises even (cuz it was so abused before I got it) and it never quit. I sold it for a CPU for my computer but I now have another 360 that I got with MW2. I have 2 PS3s (ones my dads) and I never use them. Ever. They're great, and I love em, I had some good times on them but it's just not as good as a 360.

I know this video is old but the comments are stupid. 1. It's not "glue" it's thermal compound 2. RROD (3 red lights) is caused by overheating 3. You need to clean the CPU because the thermal paste is shit on the xbox 4. They were getting 2 red lights because they didn't have the video cable plugged in but they could have let it run because it will still reflow the motherboard as long as the xbox is running. 5. You reflow to fix the solder joints 6. Most people use too much thermal compound.

erm..you're supposed to get the two red lights. that means it's overheating. and this can all be achieved by not taking it apart, you just wrap it in three towels and turn it on for 20 minutes, let it cool for 20 minutes and it works. temporarily. the r.r.o.d. is caused by two contact points disconnecting on the motherboard, forcefully overheating your xbox essentially just makes them melt back into place. it's like a ghetto soldering iron.

Correction: The PC has better graphics/better materials if it is Upgraded as a gaming system. Just buying one isn't going to cut it for every good game out there with great graphics. None of the steps after taking the motherboard out made any sense. How is wiping off thermal paste and overheating the GPU going to solve anything?
@mitchawesomefoot6139
10 жыл бұрын
You want to overheat the GPU because the crappy lead-free solder they used cracks, which is the usual cause of the red-ring. Heating it up with a heatgun (not a hair dryer, not powerful enough) can get the solder to a temperature where it melts enough to settle the solder and fix the cracks. Wiping off the thermal paste has to do with how you have to remove the heatsink (where the paste is) to access the chip. You should remove all the old thermal paste and apply a fresh layer of it when you're done as a cautionary step to make sure the heat rolls off the chip smoothly. I've repaired two different old 360s several times with a heatgun successfully, although only temporarily (had one working for 3 months straight, they end up acting up more and more). It's not worth the effort really, as the solder is crap and will end up cracking again and you can damage the chips. A majority of the red-rings could've been avoided if they were allowed to use lead solder, but since it's a "toy" that kids use, they're not allowed by US (and I think a lot of other countries) law. Which is stupid, tearing apart the system to get to where the solder is is too much work for a kid young enough to not know the dangers of lead.

Is this a rip off repair kit? Two theories of repair say the overheating "melts" the connections just enough that you get vibrations in the 360 and cause the overheat/communication loss error (red rings of death). One way to repair is to re-secure the systems components and replace the 'grease' as they so eloquently put it. The other is to wrap it in towels and cause such an overheat that it actually resets the systems board (don't think that works personally). This seems to be both?
