My two cents on why purple (or rather, pure magenta) is used as a default color is because it's very rarely used otherwise, so you'll notice immediately if you forgot to add color or texture to something (it's also used to indicate transparency in static images, again for the same reason).

BornCG Another thing you may want to try, is to put the texture color output in to the color input of the glossy shader (instead of roughtness) and add the texture color output on the "height" input of a bump node and feed the normal output to the normal inputs of the diffuse and glossy shaders.Nice stuff there.
@psychorat5

Hi Colin, thank you again for awesome tutorials. At 6.07 , I played it around in blender and realized the factor in mix shader, is about which one you connect as a first shader. I connect the first shader link to diffuse and second to glossy and saw it became green at factor 0. It means at "0.00 value" its on the first one, at "1.00 value" its on the second one. Just wanted to add this here. Thank you.

20:40 This was confusing because you actually isolated the glossiness to the cracks only, and not the surface, which is the opposite of what you were trying to achieve. You'll notice that when you plug the image texture into the roughness, the surfaces becomes matte, and the cracks stay shiny. You have to take the original texture image and invert it in gimp/photoshop/pixelmator and save it as dirt_inverted.png or whatever. Add another image texture node with your dirt_inverted image and just plug it in between 'mapping' and 'roughness' on the 'glossy' node and you are done. I think it also looks better with the original texture plugged into the glossy colour. THANK YOU FOR THE EXCELLENT TUTORIALS !!

This was a great video, but a bit complicated. I have to agree it might be better to break it down into a couple of parts like another poster suggested. It is a lot for a beginner. Is there a list somewhere listing each of the nodes and what they are used for? I am completely lost when it comes to setting this up in Cycles for other projects. The good news is, it is soooo much easier to set up a texture the way you did it in Cycles and ya know, I haven't seen anyone else explaining Mapping/Scaling before and have asked and searched! Thank you for this information. If nothing else I can at least now I can add textures in Blender scale them with this method.

Just so you know, I'm on 2.74 the option bar below the nodes view has changed. There is no object node now. You need to make sure that you switch over to the cycles render engine whether you start up blender. This is in the very top bar in a pull down menu.. You'll need to switch it from blender render to cycles render. Then you'll see the same light and material options as me, like nodes.

Hello :) Your tutorials are great, I love them, but I have a problem here, I hope you (or someone else) can help me with it. I'm trying to animate a dying star, and what I'm trying to do is to shift it from yellow to white with an emitting shader, but I can't find a way to animate the color change. I tried hovering the mouse over the color and typing "i" on different time frames but it just goes from yellow to white, instead of red... What should I do? THanks in advance, and keep up with the tutos, they are the best I've found :D

OMG! My textures where coming out blurry using , add image to material. The UV texture maps output at a resolution of 72. Really? I couldn't find a way to fix the resolution setting in blender to change that output. Now with th is Node editor i can zoom right up to the texture and it is picture perfect clear. Thank you Ever so much. Now i just have to learn how to add textures to sections of my house :). Assigning material to faces then use this to add textures. Wish me luck or please make a tutorial on that. :).

Wow, how over complicated is that. It has taken me a few attempts and I am not sure I could do it again without your commentary but I did finally manage to duplicate what you did. Many thanks. If I am honest I think there was probably too much in here for one tutorial, and it may have been better split over 2 to gradually build the complexity. Is there any reason why I would or wouldn't want to drag the Image texture colour to both the Glossy and Diffuse Roughness. I played with it and whilst I couldn't explain why it did seem to make a difference.
