Hes actually doing this the hard way.. the Really hard way. Take the entire image into (image editor), cut out the section you want, straighten it, export, bring back into Blender as a plane. Would take 60 seconds instead of 6 minutes.

This tutorial is legit. I hope its in the blender manual. I read it a long time ago and remember sampling a texture then painting it. But I dont remember reading about unraping curved surfaces like the bark of the tree example and parking sign example you gave.

Awesome video! Thanks a ton! Just two remarks for those less Blender savvy: You can use Fit or Crop when setting the camera background. That will maintain your ratio 1:1. Also, You don't have to add geometry for simple objects, you can use the Subsdivision modifier. Just switch it from Catmull-Clark to Simple. You can discard or hide the modifier after the painting is done. It will help you maintain you geometry clean.

Wow. I have been learning Blender for a little while and seen various tutorials employing specialized apps for achieving this but THIS seems much more universally useful beyond just texture extracting. I am regularly blown away at how powerfully functional Blender is for its 2D tools as well as their intergration into 3D workflows.

Superb tutorial! You deserve more subscribes! I think your channel will grow to become a major source of excellent Blender tutorials! The pace of your tutorials may be a bit fast for novices(they can always play it slower or pause and repeat), but they are perfect for long time Blender users like me who want a quick reference!

this is rad! I'm sure texture extraction is great for 3D work but for me I love the VFX cleanup/set extension applications. Can't tell you how many times I've bent over backwards to deal with planar surfaces that aren't facing the camera...I knew the concept of UV unwrapping was a thing but I found it all way too intimidating (and pricey). Doing this in Blender then plopping these textures into After Effects for compositing is going to be a game changer!
