Hey Everyone! In this video I show how to use a mist pass in Blender in order to add procedural mist to any shot or 3d scene of your choice. This technique is super useful to create a cinematic look for your projects. Enjoy and let us know what you would like to see next. That is an interesting technique. Can we do the same process for 3d renders?

Thanks Jon! Yes and pretty simple too! You can do the same process for 3d renders yes...just need to export and combine the mix pass with the beauty pass as well. Same general concept.

Is there a way to make the mist pass only effect one render layer in compositer?

the concept is solid, but in this case you might well be doing it in PS with a brush....

Yes true for a static shot.

is there no way to make a depth map?
@LightArchitect

Yes you can make a depth map in Blender; however for this type of live action effect I've found its simpler and more versatile to use a mist pass.

Nice but why not just right click and then click subdivide?

That works too. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks a lot for the tutorial, but, as there is no motion in this live shot, I don't see the point to use a 3D software like Blender. A much more efficient and time saving way would have been to do that in a 2D or Photo software like Photoshop and apply that layer onto the video. This Blender precise and 3D compositing is only useful if we have a live video shot with 3D camera tracking and/or animated 3d element in the live shot. Let me know your comments. If you have the same tutorial with a live shot that would be better! Thanks for your good videos!
