I just posted that I'm shocked animation layers aren't native to Blender yet. Glad to hear they're working on it long term, but really that should have been part of 2.9 or earlier. I'm glad to see all the improvements in the Sculpting interface, but animation layers are probably far more important to studios if Blender is really looking to get adopted in the professional markets as they should. Anyway, this addon is fantastic. Very important feature.
@MeshVoid

@@cgvapors963 I think it was the initial plan to make 2.9 all about animation and have a meeting with major studios around the world, which was scrambled due to corona. Dev team was planning to focus more on animation improvements in 2.9 having a clear plan, but because initial plans were scrambled they have decided to shift their focus to performance improvements, modeling, UI polishing and other areas while leaving one developer for bug fixing in animation module. I think it was a rational decision on their part, considering limited human resources they had, my guess is animation and rigging leap has been postponed for 3.0 which is coming next year, meanwhile we will enjoy more performance, It's okay not to rush if you don't have a clear plan.

I found that the NLA is more equivalent to the "Time Editor" in Maya but clunky. I'm Blender user, I'm only familiar with what I saw of it in a tutorial video (kzitem.info/news/bejne/rmN4mp6qjZhkdqQ). What I mean by clunky is how you can only have one strip occupying the same time space on a track/layer, and more importantly that when moving them, strips physically block each other and you have to navigate around them to move them.

@lucianomunoz
4 жыл бұрын
Hey I'm glad it's helping you not to give up on it!, well my experience it hasnt been that bad in viewport when it comes to animation, but to be fair the more "complex" piece I did ever animation wise in blender was this: vimeo.com/226993548 But that was in 2.7x (fun fact: I was actually working on that full on in on this date about 3 years ago). and i remember it was workable by using the low res rigs, but also to be fair those rigs aren't really optimized, I'll take a stab at opening those scenes today and see how fast they go :)
@lucianomunoz
4 жыл бұрын
so I just reopened that scene and with the characters in high rez but with simplify (without subdivision), I get 10fps on my laptop, which if i compare it to what I'm getting at work in maya on a machine that's 16 cores and 64gb of ram is basically the same, but seems like maya's performance is quite scalable in the sense that i usually get thos 10fps with 2 or 5 o 10 chacters (with parallel evaluation), while in blender I'm not sure if that will scale the same way.
@joaoalexdias
4 жыл бұрын
@@lucianomunoz thanks, actually the latest 2 version of Maya are quite fast in the viewport, I'm working on a personal shot with 2 characters ( no facial) and I getting stable 24fps, on a 4 core I7-4770k and a quadro M4000, and I don't even use the cache viewport! Yeah totally, There are two things id like to address there: one the reason I promote animation layers is because I'm incredibly excited about it and with all the years using blender the'es never been something similar that added so much goodness to the animation pipeline, and being paid at least means the developer will continue to develop it (hopefully), which brings me to the problem of promoting a free add on like animaide which i really like, is that the developer seems to have abandoned it and I don't know how much will that benefit or disappoint users so no bug fixes, no new feature no nothing, but a video on animaide has always been on my plans.

Great addon, but I'm having some problems. I have a character rigifa rigged, I linked it to a new scene. I was animating myself and figured that I was going to test the addon animation layer. Everything worked fine - until for some reason, because for some reason after restarting the blender, the linking relationship of the rig broke and the whole character disappeared. It happens at different intervals, sometimes after 2 hours, other times I thought that everything was ok, a few specific runs of the project, I even reset the computer, and it was ok until the whole thing disappeared. Even Merge Down with Smart Bake doesn't help. It made me lose my entire day of work. In general, it seems to me that the linking system is so unstable that the addon itself also crashes it

Hi Troy, unfortunately it's a limitation of the breakdowner itself with additive layers. It works only with 'replace' layers. The problem is with scale and rotation quaternions, if you just need location inbetween, then you can filter it with hotkey G. This problem was reported already more then 2 years ago (before the addon existed) and on their 'To Do' list. However if there will be no progress with this then I would probably write my own breakdowner for additives

Many addons like that one add functionallity that is not there, but do so with data that IS there, so the addon is very valuable :) You can have more space in the NLA byi going to View > Show control f-curves. I'm not even an animator but the changes that happened sometime in 2.82 or 2.83 are great, and I noticed when I used it recently it seemed more intuitive. Before there was an extra dropdown for changing the track name when you can already do that double clicking in the name, and the first tab was in the second one with everything else as well as two panels that now are a subpanel.

I hope you dont mind but ill answer in english, that way most of my viewers can benefit from the answer, the cape is mainly a lot of experimental chains from rigify, combined with some basic copy ones, ill do a video on that as soon as my laptop is workeing properly again

I sort of remember a different addative animation layer editor. Cant recall its name though.

It was actually called "Additive NLA layers" i got a old copy of 2.79 on my drive I found the blender artist thread again as well. blenderartists.org/t/nla-additive-animation-layers-add-subtract-multiply/1100149

Yeah but that was fixing a little issue on the NLA strips, but the animation layers addon actually looks and behaves as expected.

What does Maya do for animation layers that's so different? I know it's a lot better!
@lucianomunoz
3 жыл бұрын
Firstly animation layers in maya are a part of its code, not a plugin so it makes for a much tighter integration, and blenders animation layers addon though it is great because it's a hack you can manually break it if you start messing with the nla, in fact when you use the animation layers the nla becomes useless and you need to start chosing which way to go. I dont use the nla much if the animation layers were part of blender other tools could make use of it.

@@lucianomunoz I know blender can use animation nodes? Is that any better than the NLA? I can only find limited tutorials on it, seems like a fringe function. Do you think Maya's the best animation software even compared to 3d studio and C4D?

animation nodes and the nla have nothing to do with eachother, check out this course from rigging dojo about the NLA ondemand.riggingdojo.com/a/47021/5hbfzZzu
