Some more info here for people who might be new to assets in Blender, it's good practice to have your source assets positioned at the world origin so you don't get weird offsets like at 7:47. This happens because the instanced collection doesn't make assumptions about where you want the origin of the entire collection to be, so it sets it to 0,0,0. If you don't want it to be 0,0,0, you can set a different XYZ value in the collection properties of your original asset collection, the property is called 'Instance Offset'.

Thanks man, very useful 👌🏼👍🏻. Its a bit of an annoyance that it would require all the objects to be on top of each other if you had a file with multiple assets in....

with any of the 'limit' constraints, there is a toggle called 'affect transforms' ...this option will prevent you from moving the object past the limits you've set in the constraint (unless you manually type larger values directly into the transform channels). as far as the minimum and maximum order, it is based on the traditional order of operations and not based on the viewport. as an example, a maximum value of 1 could move the object both up and down depending on the objects local orientation.

Cool. I've been watching a couple asset browser videos in preparation for putting all my screws, screwholes, etc into assets instead of just a known place, but those all talk about it from a materials POV. It's great to see one that addresses things like assemblies of models rather than stuff irrelevant to 3DP. I had a professor in college who would write assembly code from bottom to top, because the first code you run is lower in memory. :)

Excellent tutorial, thank you so much! I just received my first Maya "Engineering" file of a vehicle for a client, and I've never had to organize soooo many meshes and materials before (prepping for car rigging) and this was a huge help!! Any other tips you can offer on optimizing a mesh in my case? Even on a RTX4090 this 7GB FBX file from the manufacturer is HEAVY. lol I'm trying to learn more about mesh optimization for making this engineering model into a media-ready asset. I primarily do previs and concept art- so this is a first for managing HUGE meshes like this. THANKS again!

Hmm.... That does sound pretty savage as a file. Depending on the file the decimate modifier should help a bit if it's really dense but you may want to try a retopology route either manually or using something paid for like quad remesher, though I've never used this or seen it used on something VERY dense so I don't know how it will hold up.

You know the absolute funny thing. For the last 2 days, I have been watching outdated Asset/Kitbashing videos and thought "I wonder if AoV has an asset video for tabletop?" I was even gonna suggest one because it could help a lot of us out in the niche, but felt weird because I am not on your patron.

Well I'm glad I can help. And I always listen to video suggestions so always feel free to comment. I just prioritise those from the Patreon and I think that's probably fair. But it doesn't mean suggestions from elsewhere wouldn't make it on.

I'm sure you know already - but for maybe someone who does not - holding D down lets you sketch with the little blue pencil and holding right-click lets you erase the pencil sketch.

nice mini tutorial. i wonder, is there any hotkey+LMB to select all hierarchy in outliner, like click on parent or collection and select all sub objects? i know about select linked/similar/childrens and RMB-select objects/hierarchy, but maybe you can one click it?

1. I just wish that Instance-tickbox existed in v4... Sure, it's somewhere but where o where. 2. I just wish there was a method/tickbox for automatically place the dragged out asset where you drop it, instead of adding the assets location data relative to where you drop it. Just one tickbox that subtracts the assets location xyz-values to where ever you drop it...

You lose all the Modification and constraints when objects are parented with the 'objects' selection. Chose 'Transform' from the Parents' menu, allowing future Mods and constrains application. But this is workflow works in 3.6.0 doesn't work in 3.6.7 - 4.0 RC crashes -
