Nice little tutorial and just the effect I looking for, trying to recreate something similar to the vent doors from alien isolation. Would I be right in assuming the more wedges you have, the rounder looking the inner circle? And if so how would you go about figuring out where to place the pieces?

And would it be a simple case of doubling the number of wedges or is it more involved than that

Thank you so much! 😊😊 Yes you're correct! I have a smoother and rounder 10 wedges version here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/jmmFqaGEfp2Hq6w

Basically you just split a circle into several sectors as you want, this would be the wedges. Then to open them, you just move each sector in the axis that is parallels to the chord of each sector.

OK, that makes sense, a bit, it's easy to follow on the 6 piece one. Move one wedge to centre of where the next two join (red goes to where yellow and green meet, etc) I tried quickly last night with 12 and got a bit confused, but if I color code them first then try using that method, hopefully it should work. Thanks

So, as is often the case with me, I was over thinking it. read back what you said. moving each wedge along it's normal axis till it meets the centre of the next one worked. This will work great. thank you again and sorry for getting this confused

can you tell me how you placed them perfectly that way while keyframing??

Oh, you can specify the exact location by numbers from the transform panel. 😊 Like from (5, 3) to (1, 2). That way your animation would be very exact.

My only question is do the pieces actually correspond with each other like an actual working model

I don't quite understand your question, what did you mean by "correspond"?
