There should definitely be a plugin for this sort of thing

Isn't easier to render only 2 passes: 1 only with water, and 1 with ground and without water (transparent), and then compose one on top of another?

Yes indeed, that would be easier. I can't believe I didn't think of that!

what a pain in the ass. I have been having such problems making a pool look like anything other than a death pit and this is why. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for watching! Knowing how to make a death pit could be useful too, so don't write it off completely! ;)

How do I need to make the mask and transparent scenes if I have characters IN the water? Just following this setup 1:1 either give: -Massive black areas cause of screenspace reflection in the water due to the characters being in the "transparent" scene. -no visible body under the water due to them not being in the transparent scene... What is the setup for that case?

What about the OVER-SCAN feature? Isn't it for this purpose?

That would work for anything occluded by the edge of the render area, but not for anything occluded by an object in the scene (the pool in this case).

your system works very good , but is there a way to achieve the same result in 3D viewport , without rendering with F12 ?

As long as the refraction is calculated using "screen space", the camera will have to see the bottom of the pool and/or you'll have to composite it. Cycles doesn't use screen space refraction, so that's a better choice if you can handle the increased render time.

Sorry, bit of a noob question but how did you set your cube up like that at the start of the video?

If you're referring to the basic pool geometry, there are two ways to make a shape like this. Option A, Start with a cube using the face selection mode select the top face, press X and choose delete faces. Then using the edge select tool, hold down ALT and select one of the top edges (this will select the entire top edge). Then press E to extrude it, but immediately right click to "cancel" the movement. Because the added geometry is still there, you can then press S and scale it out to the desired size. Option B, Start with a plane. With the plane selected in edit mode, press I to inset the faces and drag the mouse towards the center to scale the new inset to the right size. Then press E to extrude it down.
