Unlike Perique that is produced in St. James Parish, Louisiana, using a single variety of leaf and a strict manufacturing process (not considering Acadian Perique that uses alternative varieties of leaf grown outside this region,) Latakia is by far a more complexed tobacco than people realise, for the very reason that it is made by smoking various strains of Oriental Leaf, like Izmir, Smyrna, Xanthi, Bashi Bagli, Yenidge, Basma, Drama, Samsoun, Katerina etc. In fact there are over 40 strains of Oriental leaf grown, and each varietal has its own unique flavour characteristics. Then you have to consider the various woods and spices that they burn like incense to smoke the Oriental leaf. If that is not enough then you have the blending process of the various strains of Latakia, blended together to crate a very specific Latakia blend, that is then blended with other tobaccos. Many people think Latakia is a single variety of smoked Oriental Leaf, just using different % amounts of Latakia in various English/Balkan blends, they couldn't be further from the truth✌️

Thanks for the detailed comment, Stonehenge! You highlight the primary reason why Latakia isn't produced in more places around the world--the complexity of its creation! Originally produced in Syria--named after the Syrian port Latakia (pronounced Luh-TOH-kee-uh)--now it is produced in Cypress. Due to changes in soil composition and variations of the process, the flavor of Cyprian Latakia is different than the original Syrian Latakia. As you mentioned, many varieties of Oriental leaf go into its production as well as various woods, mosses. and spices, which produces that distinctive aroma and flavor. My comment about its lack of complexity wasn't aimed so much at the process but more about its flavor. Smoked alone Latakia is nuanced but not overly complex. To my palate, it's somewhat flat and requires the brightness of Virginia or oriental/turkish sun-cured leaf to bring out complexity. For this reason, it is not usually considered a base tobacco but rather it is the quintessential condiment tobacco. Your comment has also highlighted why I've left Orientals until the end of my blending series--because of the sheer number of varieties and flavors in the "Oriental/Turkish" category--it really could have a series of its own. I will do my best. Thanks again for a great comment!

The only source for Latakia is now Cypress. What I find surprising is the difference in nuances. I'm guessing this is from different sources of woods used in the fire curing process.. just a thought..

Oh man, crazy stuff out there in TX Logan. Very unfortunate for many out there, good to see you back. I find Latakia to be very savory, but I do like to treat it as a condiment in sweeter blends. Good seeing you brother, be well and stay safe out there 🤙 JB

Dang, one of my favorite tobacco youtubers talking about my absolute favorite type of tobacco? Sign me up! Big plus since I get to watch this on my birthday:D I just gave a few samples of tobacco to a friend of mine with matching descriptions, but I think I didn't do a really good job at describing what Latakia tastes like. I just can't draw a line between Latakia and anything I tasted before. You did a really good job however, just as always .

Though I've never smoked it alone, I do love latakia! I have some MacBaren Plumbcake now.. I remember "Sherlocks Choice " that Tender Box used to sell many years ago. I got out of pipes for a couple of decades and now I'm back. Still love 1Q with a pinch or so of Latakia.

My favorite tobacco is latakia, I have started blending my own about 4 months ago, can't reach to a lot of different tobacco leaves due to the legislation but adding up to 20-25 % latakia addes up a lot to our orentals in Turkey.

Great video, and glad to see you’re back! One thing I’ll add is you should definitely dedicate certain pipes for Latakia blends. I was smoking a bowl of C&D Joie de Vivre while watching this. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it. It’s delicious and the aging potential is immense.

For sure, Latakia can ghost a pipe so that's a great tip about dedicating a pipe or pipes to those blends. I have not yet tried Joie de Vivre but it's on my radar. I hope to snag some soon for my cellar. Take care, Greg!

Latakia is essential to English blends. There are many choices containing Latakia. I avoid the " Lat bombs". I enjoy various flavor nuances. Good era to be a pipe smoker. Be Safe...
@ThereAndTobacAgain

Hey Bill, it's true that English blends have become synonymous with Latakia mixtures but originally it was not so. English blends were considered those that followed English purity laws, so they were distinguished by their lack of artificial toppings. Tobacconists began using naturally aromatic tobaccos like Latakia and Oriental in the mixtures to create aromatic mixtures that adhered to purity laws. Some say that a true English is a hot-pressed tobacco. This would mean that even straight Va tobaccos like Capstan could be considered English tobacco. Whatever the case, the sheer variety of tobaccos available now--English and non--make this a wonderful time to be a pipe smoker as you said. Keep the pipes warm, Bill!

In small quantities It's good.. like salt in mashed potatos..the only C&D blend that I didn't like at all was Mountain Camp.. waaaaay too much lat.. but in my younger days Latakia gave me headache.. that may explain my cautious approach?

Ya know, I had never considered the cedar flavor before but as I smoked this morning I started looking for that flavor and I would absolutely agree! That's a great describer to add to the flavor profile of Latakia. Personally, I love the smell of cedar, so it's a welcome addition to the palate. Take care, my friend!
