Hey, we heard somebody over here was looking at art materials- thanks for visiting us! Glad you mentioned watercolor ground- there are several companies offering this marvelous stuff. Watercolor ground is an acrylic-based primer that can be applied to a huge range of supports- basically any material that can accept acrylic gesso- to make it accept paint just like watercolor paper. That bookbinding kit is a great starter set. Thanks again for including us in this video!

I have the Koi watercolor set. It’s good for playing around, art journaling, and travel. My advice is to wet all the paint pans when you start your painting. Then the paint turns nice and creamy. It has a good range of colors as well. Put your thumb through the ring on the back of the case with your palm up. That makes the set really easy to hold while painting.

Me too!! I have some pieces of wood I'd love to paint watercolor on. I'm really curious what the ingredients are. I really hate the plastic in acrylics and acrylic grounds. I'm really hoping there is no plastic in these!

One thing I didn't see on the bookbinding kit included supplies list was chipboard for the cover? I only saw signature paper and the cover paper. Unless this is a soft cover kit?

I've seen people use oil paint in a sketchbook by putting down gesso first. The watercolor ground is supposed to make any surface feel like and grab watercolor like mirrors or glass, paper, wood, and any papers or canvas.

I purchased the Kikkerland Book Binding Kit (I am a beginner) and found the instructions for the Japanese Stab Binding confusing. It says to cut the A4 paper to make an A5 book. The diagrams are confusing as well. I think for a beginner these instructions could be more detailed.

I do art journaling in my Bible and the paper is thin, fragile, and bleeds through if you use the wrong tool. Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground, I use transparent, is a game changer. It seals the page like a gesso and it gives the page just enough tooth to effectively watercolor on it. It keeps the page flatter when using a wet medium. You cannot use wet on wet in a Bible, but on other surfaces this ground allows you to do so. However, the paint will not react like on a 100% cotton watercolor paper. One limitation is that not all markers like this surface, so you have to try things out first. Bottom line, when bought at a reasonable price like at Blick, it is worth playing around with to see if it meets your needs. It will certainly expand possibilities for the watercolor artist who wants to experiment. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Daniel Smith or Blick. Thanks Sea Lemon for all you do online. I have made many of my own watercolor sketchbooks from Arches paper for myself and as gifts. People are always amazed at the quality and this is because of your excellent videos.

Watercolor ground is amazing! Just be careful while applying to not put some in your skin, it can be really irritating for the skin. My mum had a few drops on her hand and did a kind of big allergy. Grounds are usually not really environmental or skin friendly. This one in particular is not.

try to find the most of needet tools in your household ... per example instead of using a very special kind of spatula ... use lowprice or even leftover table knifes, grind them to that form you need and spare a lot of money! well ... if the bookblock is not too thick i am to use a furniture tacker with needles or even crumps, tacker the sheets of paper to a bookblock an at least i can choose the way to bind it: softcover or complete hardcover. i saw a brochure, tackered with furniture cramps and the spine was saved by a ducktape. quality is ok, price is ok, and the look is ... usefull up to gentle. so far: ok, too.

@Gerry-T. Fuchs • I'm not sure as many people have grinders and furniture tackers lying around the house as your comment suggests. Growing up with my father's tool chest which had overflowed to additional tool boxes, coffee cans, etc., I was shocked when I moved away and priced out tools for the simplest repair job. Plus, starter apartments aren't spacious enough for tool chests. These companies provide a valuable service to millions of people. I don't turn my nose up at people who purchase their goods and hope, in the future, you will show more understanding and compassion.

@@yvonnetomenga5726 well, this is not my mother's language so it may be you were to missunderstand me. i did not want to set you to feel bad or hurt in any way ... by the way: i beg you to sorry that if i did. on the other side: for me it is easier to get an accu-furniture tacker and the needles and crumps as to buy so very specially tools... and a grinder ... so many neighbours have an accu-driller i can lean for a little while and the grinder is availible for just a few cents. and at least: an old or a leftover table knive .... emm ... although to get in an one-euro-shop (equal to an one-dollar-store). the price was about 45 eur-cent per piece. the price for an accu-furniture tacker is about 45 - 50 eur and i am using this for so manny jobs in the household in the office in the garden ... ...

Well done! I have that koi set and it works fairly well for simple on the go sketchy studies. I like to take a watercolor block as then the paper is stretched and ready to go, will not warp and you can get smaller sizes too. You might consider taking watercolor postcards! They are that 4x6ish size and many come in a tin for storage, keeping everything close and ready for painting. I have replaced the original paint in the palette several times and any good quality paint will work just fine. I use DaVinci as that is the one paint I recommend for anyone who wants a better paint! Yeah I rather have the converted zealots attitude towards a fabulous product, I simply believe that DaVinci makes the best paints.

On the watercolor grounds there are actually 3 different ones that you can get that mimic different types of watercolor paper. There's one that is for mimicking hot press watercolor paper that is fairly thin and is the texture of a thick acrylic paint, one that is to mimic cold press watercolor paper that's very thick paste with chunks in it, and one that is meant for adding 3D texture to the painting that's like a really thick frosting it's easier to spread with a knife instead of a paint brush and you are meant to make it not even. So it's good to check which one you have because certain techniques need certain types of paper. Also the brushes you use to spread the watercolor grounds onto the surface will also contribute to the final texture so it can be fun to get different brushes/paint knives/sponges/rollers and try out the different textures you can get. Watercolor grounds are really fun and vital if you like painting on canvas.

when you do your sketching video while on travel, could you talk about what you consider as far as safety? I always kind of wonder when traveling, do I want to stay in one place, is it safe of people like pick-pockets, etc. how do you balance a place that is kind of well traveled and yet open enough that you don't block people traffic?

I have a bit of experience with the water color ground. I think it works best painted onto a surface like wood or canvas. ( i used it to make little water colored ornaments on small log slices) The main tip I would give is to use a sponge brush to apply it to minimize brushstroke lines. The texture of brush stroke lines can kind of interfere with how the water moves across the ground and absorbs, so things can get kind of streaky. I’ve also tried applying 3 coats and then sanding it with a superfine sand paper and that seems to help the texture, you just have to use a very light touch and very clean sandpaper.

I picked up that bookbinding kit at my local art supply chain (Guiry's). If I go by the included directions, each book is of either the single signature pamphlet variety or Japanese stab binding. I currently have all the papers folded into signatures of 5 pages each, tucked into a press with light pressure, and waiting for me to decide how I really want to use the materials. (I'm thinking using all of the paper in a case bind.) Paper quality seems pretty good, at least.

What are the yellow strips on either side of the paint pans? I've seen other sets that have sponges, I think. Which I'm thinking are for wiping your brush? Which I can't imagine those would hold up long if those are also sponges. IF they are sponges can you replace them once they get really nasty?

I’m trying to learn to use watercolour of canvas using watercolour ground as a base. I’ve only done it once so far, and it wasn’t too bad! I only used one coat on my canvas, will probably do two or three in the future, since the paint bled through to the back of the canvas in a few places.

It is definitely upcycling! I have been getting hardcover books from my local refuse department to upcycle into journals and sketchbooks. These books are already thrown away - destined for the dump - so I am absolutely upcycling them!
