The lyrics are super important to this show, because there’s virtually no dialogue. I highly recommend subtitles when available, to make sure you’re absorbing the words as much as the music. The music is great and super important, but people miss a lot by not focusing on the lyrics.

There really isn't any spoken dialogue in the show, so each song butts up against the next. Aaron Burr, Sir really bleeds into My Shot to the point it's hard to tell when the first ends and second begins. The beat boxing is diegetic and being done by one of the guys (Hercules Mulligan, I think) in the loud group that comes in after Burr tells Hamilton to not talk so much. As to why they came in like that, they're a bunch of young loud idiots in a bar and Hamilton is also a young loud idiot. Besties forever. If it concerns you, there are 2 ,I think, full F-bombs in the show (one in Yorktown and the other in Washington On Your Side) that are censored in the Disney+ versions but should be present in the cast recordings. They do play with saying it other times, but never fully do.

It’s all genius. IMHO The lyrics could be read like Shakespeare. But the music is amazingly detailed and important too. I’ve gotten used to musicians focusing on the music first, and rappers focusing on the lyrics first when reacting to this. There is too much to take in both equally on the first listen.

In the show, those four guys are already in the tavern drinking. Hamilton meets Burr (this is meant to be their first meeting) either outside or just inside the door, they have their conversation, and then proceed into the bar for the drink Burr offered. So the animatic gives the wrong impression from the actual staging. After getting the plot summary in the first song, the second one introduces some of the main characters for the first act. We learn that the main narrator (and guy who says he shot Hamilton) is Aaron Burr, and the four guys who are drinking are about to become Hamilton's good buddies. In this song we meet John Laurens, Lafayette, and Hercules Mulligan. All of them have important roles to play during the Revolution - which is starting since it is 1776. It is unlikely that Hamilton met them all at once this way, but it works great in the show as an introduction to these characters that were important in Hamilton's life and will be important in the show. Pay attention in the next song when they introduce themselves further if you don't want to get even more confused later. Enjoy!

One thing that you should know. Four actors play four characters in Act 1, but play four different characters in Act 2. This can be confusing. BTW, the final song of Act 1, “Non Stop”, reminds me of Opera. Everyone is on stage. Everyone is singing. All the themes come back. It’s a spectacle. In the best way.
