OGD 114 is closer to $35 in my market, but still budget in this economy, and super full flavor. It's very "Snickers" with a lot of peanutty nuttyness, but this can be used to your benefit in numerous cocktails, and it stands up to dilution with that high proof point. An overlooked solid mixer...

At 65 years old, I buy a bottle and see which ones make me feel the best the next few hours and the next morning, after 2 shots. For me, the best so far are 100 proof Old Grand-Dad, 100 proof Early Times blue top, and 90 proof Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey aged 7 years. Prices here from $21 to $31.

Excellent job on the tasting! Your description of the whiskeys is wonderfully evocative. My two favorite bourbons are Four Roses Small Batch and Elijah Craig Small Batch, so I'm glad to see them represented favorably here. I also like Evan Williams Bonded and Early Times Bonded, but they don't have the complexity of Four Roses and Elijah Craig. Based on this tasting, I'll try to get some Old Grandad 114.

It's funny that he doesn't care for the wood. That explains it since BT is aged like 7-8 years which is pretty unheard of for a $25 bottle. I think it's great stuff, but WAY overhyped. BT products at MSRP are excellent values and quality juice, just don't go chasing them and paying secondary prices. BT is everywhere here in California so I always have it.

CA and AZ always have Buffalo Trace available at or below MSRP. It can be very hard to find in other states, especially ABC states. The standard bottle is always a mixer in sweeter cocktails for me. The store picks are sipped not mixed. Caveat, I like 10 to 15 year old Bourbon and Knob Creek 18.

@justinmalone8640 yeah we get very little distribution from BT in this state so like half the liquor stores go crazy and price gouge and the half put it out as they get it for $30 a bottle and the handful they get are gone in a few days or they draw names for it and call you to pick one up at that price. Don’t get me started on eagle rare, $150-200 in a lot of stores around here, though I did manage to snag one for $40 from one of the good stores that doesn’t play those games but it’s the only time I’ve ever seen it for msrp in this state and haven’t seen it since. A fair number of stores will lottery it instead of gouging it or putting on the shelves. We really are a desert for everything BT except ancient age and traveller. Even the bourbon cream gets gouged and lotteried sometimes but not usually.

I feel like Kentucky Bourbon has a really narrow flavor profile. Being able to pick out differences beyond ABV (as we know, higher ABV means stronger flavor, not just more drunkening power) is something to write home about.

I've had a lot of liquor.... not exhaustive and Buffalo Trace is a favorite, but Costco's kirkland brands of bourbon (small batch, bonded), tequila, vodka, rum, gin and cognac are excellent on their own and as a base. Their liqueurs are not so good, avoid the orange grand marnier knockoff. The value can't be beat, especially with the gin.

I keep trying to like whiskey, but I don't. I'm starting to come around on a couple of rye whiskey cocktails, but I'm largely a gin and tequila guy. (Gimlets and Palomas are my favorite.) For beer, I like stouts, sours, and ciders. For wine, I like dry and sour whites: Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewürztraminer. Any idea on where to start? (Also, I've been really enjoying your channel, and you've inspired me to buy bar equipment and learn to make drinks. Thank you for all the tips and advice; you make really great content and you seem like a good dude.)

Start with whiskey cocktails. My favorite bourbon for a Old Fashion is Wild Turkey 101. Rye whiskey's have more of a bite to them and wheated whiskeys are generally smoother to the palet. Elijah Craig Small batch is a fine whisky to drink neat or chilled on ice. Bulleit Rye is a good example of a popular Rye forward whisky.
