Yeah, Blitz Bowl is a pretty amazing game. Quick to learn and play, simple to learn but complex to master, and lots of expandability. It boggles the mind that they've done two seasons -- Season 2 being the much better buy -- but haven't made it available worldwide. For folks interested or who play, check out "The Crush" podcast which has a number of episodes covering tactics, teams, and so on (no affiliation -- just a fan). Glad you enjoyed it -- looking forward to some demo games and the Crypt Hunters unboxing/review!

Very generous of Glenn. I saw some blitz bowl stuff on sale but already had season 1 and 2 so just grabbed a skaven team and halfling team to expand blood bowl teams. Crypt hunters is an interesting twist on lost patrol but it was not on sale. I did test lost patrol using the turn sequence from crypt hunters and it makes the game way better.

I've only read the rules of Crypt Hunters so far, but could immediately see it looked like an improvement over Lost Patrol, giving the chainrasps more to think about and removing some of the most obvious Lost Patrol situations that can occur (like when stealers just plonk down next to your marines). I loved the original Lost Patrol and thought GW really ruined the reissue, so I'm hopeful this will be a solid step up from that.

Wow, Glen really is quite the hero; that is an amazing un-birthday gift he sent over. Discounting RPGs over zoom, Blitz Bowl was nearly the only game I played in 2020. I taught it to a friend just prior to quarantine starting, then later in the year participated in an online league with ~12 people or so, conducted by the Crush podcasting duo. I’ve got a deep background with Blood Bowl and enjoy the variant versions (BB7’s, Dungeon Bowl) so I was an easy mark for this game. The quick play time and changes to the core mechanics of Blood Bowl make Blitz Bowl so refreshing to play. The removal of Turn-overs from the rules make it much less stressful than normal BB as well. A really great way to introduce people to the general concepts of Blood Bowl and/or a fun change of pace for the die-hards. It’s a win-win, imho. FYI: Season 2 tweaked and improved the Challenge cards from Season 1 to take into account the differences between bashy and fast teams being able to score points. The only reason to own Season 1 would be to have all 4 pitch variants, which is a “nice to have” but not essential. Also FYI: I can tell you from personal experience that the Dark Elves are… not good. They were my go-to team for Blitz Bowl last year and my record was something abysmal like 2-13 or worse (probably worse, I didn’t keep track). I’ve played several hundred games of Blood Bowl on the tabletop, and while that experience doesn’t necessarily translate 1:1 (which is great, this game is really fantastic that way) I’m certainly no noob. I’m just giving a gentle heads up that while the Dark Elf models look great, they’re quite a challenging team to win with.

I've been soloing games this week to learn the rules and I'm very impressed with it. Honestly, I can't see myself playing the pointy ears although I know some people who will love to. I'm a greenskins man, mainly... although the super punchy chaos team could sway me.

I never could get a Blood Bowl league running, but with all this cool stuff, plus I already have orcs, goblins, and skaven, I have plenty of teams so I may finally get a league! Might need to paint first though, and get some markers on the bases. Am I the only one who struggles telling the different player miniatures apart? I might also need to make some ball tokens or something; I find using the little ball pieces a bit too fiddly during a game. I've only played Blitz Bowl a few times to learn it, but I'm very impressed so far. It's incredibly quick and streamlined. It has a real challenge to beat Labyrinth of the Necrons, which I absolutely love, but I would say it's better than Rise of the Orks. I haven't played Crypt Hunters yet (but I'm keen to) so I can't compare it to that, but while I've never had a chance to play the other games in this range none of them looked particularly amazing. The Lord of the Rings one looked pretty terrible, and I believe one of the other games was just a reskin of that.
@johnmiddleton4291
3 жыл бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I just put the ball on the base and don't slot it in the hole. Painting definitely helps with identifying the different player types, but it's pretty easy once you've played a bit. The upcoming Warcry game looks to be good too, though it will also need some expansion options. Maybe GW will include them as with Blitz?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmiddleton4291 I don't use the push-in balls either, just the "loose" ones. I've always had trouble with the human blitzers and linemen, and I think the dwarf blitzers and linemen might be even harder to tell apart. Stuff like the catchers and throwers are obviously much easier to identify. That "Warcry lite" game looked like it might be a bit too simple out of the box so I suspect you might be right and there will be some extra warband expacs for it.
@danroberts007
3 жыл бұрын
@Always Board Never Boring I cut all the spikes off the human linemen to differentiate them from the Blitzers; much easier to to tell them apart that way. For the balls, I glued them to 20mm round bases for this game and just move them alongside the ball-carrier model. Easy to pick up and spot on the pitch. A lot of tabletop BB players will magnetize their player bases and balls, but I’ve always thought that was too much work. Ymmv. I am looking forward to the next batch of GW games in this series: Doomsday Countdown in particular, as I need those cultists to complete my Blackstone Fortress Escalation set. The Warcry/Underworlds hybrid game looks interesting. If it gets favorable reviews I may pick that up; there are some nice models in there.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
3 жыл бұрын
@@danroberts007 Making the linemen less pointy seems like a good idea. They are very similar to the blitzers, and they always caused me trouble in Blood Bowl. I had thought about putting a magnet in the hole in each base, and I may go down that route if I feel I need to.

Crypt Hunters is a very fun concept, but the game isnt that good. if you're playing the nighthaunt you basically just rush the stormcast at all times and if you're playing stormcast you basically just try to rush through the dungeon as fast as you can and stick together. the game basically plays itself and plays the same every time and seems much too easy for the stormcast player. blitzbowl on the other hand is a really great game. much more variety and strategy but not as bloated as blood bowl.

I’ve been commissioner of long-running BB league (league has been around 12 years) for 5 years/10 seasons so Blitz Bowl was never on my radar, not to sound like a snob. Out of curiosity, does Blitz Bowl league play include skill ups like BB, and is everything kept track of via pen and paper, or does GW have a site similar to OBBLM? (I see what looks like a roster sheet toward the end of the video)
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
3 жыл бұрын
I really like Blood Bowl but it's just one of those games that never gets to the table, and I was never able to get a league going with friends. Blitz Bowl should easily see more table time. The league is very simple, and I will be talking about it more in the future. You play 10 games, recording results on the team sheets that I showed in the video, and then the two highest-scoring teams play a final game to be crowned the overall winners. There are no star players or player upgrades, but after every game coaches get a new "trait" which they record on their sheets. These "traits" are special abilities you can use once per game. There are special prizes at the end of the league for the team that caused the most injuries, or scored the fewest points, and that sort of thing.
@astronomicafilms

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Cool! Thanks! I’ve always felt BB was one of GW’s best games. By 3rd edition, that rules set was as tight as rules get. Jervis Johnson was so brilliant. Great review! I loved season 1, but it really doesn't make any sense to me that they used the exact same human team for season 2. I really want the new dwarf team but I don't want to have two of the exact same team with just different colors.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was a strange move. I remember commenting in a video when season 2 came out that it seemed strange to use humans again. The elves are more complicated builds, which is why they didn't use those, but they could have put in the skaven. I don't know what other differences there are between season 1 and 2. If you just want the dwarfs, it might be easier just to buy a Blood Bowl team and try to sell on the second sprue.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Season 1 had different board layouts, in addition to the orc team instead of dwarves. Season 2 has far more expansion team cards (added Halflings, Undead, Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen, and Nurgle IIRC), plus the Ball cards, plus the league rules & league pad. Finally, a number of the cards were tweaked for better play and balance. Not that anyone should turn their nose up at getting either season, but if you have a choice of which one to get and are only getting one, get Season 2.

Thinking of it as lite blood bowl will lead you astray if you have played blood bowl. My guess is that it is human again as the blood bowl range lacked two more sets that are close to push fit. Most of the elves are terrible to assemble.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's quite a different beast to Blood Bowl, but it's convenient to talk about it in terms relating to its big brother when talking in broad strokes. The elves were the first team that really moved away from the push-fit style of early (for the new edition) Blood Bowl teams, but I recall the skaven being push fit (although I built them ages ago, so maybe I'm remembering incorrectly). Of course, I should imagine including humans seemed like a better option than rat people.
