We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives kzitem.infoUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.

I sharpen my tractor mower blades with an angle grinder and it shoots long bright orange sparks like mild steel with no streamers. I've also bent the hell out of them too. So that's a dead give away that they're not hard. When I first bought this place I was mowing the clearing in the back and I hit a huge chunk of concrete with the tractor and bent one blade like a fish hook. The end was curved all the way around. Whoops. I beat it back straight again though. The grass there was waist high so I couldn't see what was on the ground. That was the maiden run of that tractor too. It was brand new. I was breaking it in right.

Huh. I know the mower blades on my tractor are not hardened at all. I know because I've bent one severely hitting a large chunk of concrete with it once. I bent it around like a fish hook. Then it was so out of balance it shook the whole tractor. It also kind of dug into the ground too. So I had to stop, take the blade off the machine and beat it straight with a sledge on an anvil. It was a brand new tractor. Brand new property too. That's why I didn't know about that chunk of concrete in that tall grass. Yeah I was pissed. No, not drunk. Just mad. Now if the blade was hard instead of bending like it did it would have just shattered. Which is why mower blades are not hard in the first place. No one wants a chunk of mower blade coming at them at the velocity that mowers spin them at. It would either mess you up for life or end your life right then and there. Depending on where you got hit.

As per usual another great video. I also agree that you have spot on timing for your videos in so many respects. I've done a few of my own wood planes over the years. My own block plane is a little taller so it fills my hand. This avoided the need to scrunch up my fingers and also reduces the risk of catching the heel of my palm on the sharp edge of any serious hardwoods as I'm planing an edge. It doesn't LOOK as nice as yours with your low speedy silhouette. But for function I prefer it for the way I can hold it tirelessly in hand for much longer periods of time and not risk bleeding on the wood when the heel of my palm gets cut by some hardwood when I don't hold it up high enough.

The blade on my mower is very soft. Do you think yours will keep an edge, even after tempering?
@PaskMakes
6 жыл бұрын
While it wouldn't be the highest carbon steel it's held an edge to fill my workbench with shavings. I don't reckon I would use a block plane to make that many shavings in a session. And only takes a couple of minutes to sharpen the blade and set it back in the plane. :)

I also was told and found to be relatively true that mower blade isn't soft or hard steel, its more like a med hardness steel. This is a great method for getting your feet wet in plane making. This is how I started making planes . What I did and sometimes still do is make the plane body and the iron out of the mower blade (kind of prototyping), and if everything comes out successful make a 2nd iron, your permanent iron, from tool steel and that'll last you a lifetime and hold a great edge. It gets expensive if you keep messing up tool steel honing your plane making skills, don't ask how I know lol. But yeah get a few made with the mower blade steel and when you feel your ready, start making all your blades right from tool steel. As always Great video

I've heard from people that use both wood and metal body planes, wood planes are easier to use. Is that true? I've used both but I'm not in the shop often enough to tell the difference. Another KZitemr suggested that the wood body plane is burnishing the surface as you plane and that is why they are easy to use.

I was under the impression that mower blades are not high carbon steel, so that they don't shatter when they hit rocks. If that were true then wouldn't your blade lose it's edge quickly?
@PaskMakes
6 жыл бұрын
The mower blade certainly wouldn't be the best steel but I reckon it's got enough carbon to make it worth while. It would only take a couple of minutes to give it a quick sharpen and back in the plane. I probably wouldn't use the mower blade in a bigger plane that would have more of a workload. :)
