It isn't about breaking the law. It is about preventing corporations and the government from tracking where you go in your personal vehicle. Cameras can log your license plate whether you break the law or not, and all of that goes into a database that can be searched and used against you later if they feel like it. Anonymity is a right. The government should not be tracking where you go and there's nothing wrong with making it more difficult for them to do it.

I agree. This is not about breaking the law at all- this is about privacy. People that use cameras and exploit technology to invade privacy are subjected to being served by people that use plate covers to exploit the laws of physics and the refraction of light. I will happily pay a ticket if they catch me willingly breaking the law, but in some instances, photo radars might flash a car stuck in an intersection. To track people without their consent is unlawful by the constitution. Amendment IV clearly states that "The right of the people to be secure in their *persons*, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated...". Unless the camera was put up for a specific reason, the search for you and your possession (your car) is unreasonable. These traffic cameras are designed to help the police meet their quotas. They serve multiple functions, such as: Capturing speeding drivers, observing traffic patterns, and recording footage. They capture everybody and their everyday commutes to and from work. There is no way that the camera was designed to keep the public safe from YOU. If you are challenging a ticket, I suggest requesting information on when the last time they checked for faulty equipment and also request that they get the equipment checked before the court ruling. Not only will it buy you time, but the expense of having the camera checked might cost more than your "traffic violation" and the charges might be dropped... if you're lucky.

don't buy this thing. You will get pulled over. You may win your case in court (depending on the working of your state's plate visibility laws) but you will get pulled over and have a chat with officer friendly. There are alternatives to this thing, look for them, do not use this thing unless you like chats with officer friendly.

Sun screen or sun block, Sun screen blocks uv rays as we all know, but it also blocks any type of light also, and if you know anything about cameras you will know they are all about light. Thanks for showing us how to beat the cameras. But how do we beat the "improperly displayed plate" tickets that we will now get from having this thing? Your license plate can not be covered by ANYTHING. No plate covers or frames. It's a USDOT law. That's why truckers don't' use them. Trust me, I've gotten so many of those tickets I just ditched all the cute frames and covers. I can legally purchase purple headlights, radar detectors and jammers, Class B fireworks, Assault rifle bullets, 1000 watt FM transmitters etc, Legal use of these items is a different story.

Look at police vehicles (especially the ones paid for by state and federal grants) and note the small black boxes mounted on them on the back. These are license plate readers and they record every license plate they pass by. This allows anyone with access to the database the pictures are uploaded to be able to search for a particular plate number. A vehicle can be tracked wherever it goes with these readers and various traffic cameras positioned near roads. As long as the plate is visible from the rear by officers it can be argued that it is not "blocked" or obscured unless the law is written to prohibit any covering of the plate.

No one's life is at risk. When you're driving the only car on the road for miles in every direction, complete, three-second stops to make a right turn on Red are quite senseless. Not one cop on Earth would ticket a driver in that scenario. Any 7mph right turn, is beyond safe. Unless there's a robot watching the intersection, and a robot judge, instructed to maximize borough fines, on the bench. The law is black and white for working folks. Grey areas only exist for the lawyered-up caste.

True. Furthermore - there once was a law in America where you had the right to face your accuser. And if your accuser could not be present in court, then there was no case. In the instance of a traffic camera, who is the accuser? Most people go to traffic court and pay the ticket, but for those who show up and ask questions and throw a wrench in the gears of the money-making machine, they typically get the fine dismissed. Also worth noting the cameras usually take pics of the driver too.

Can you use a computer privacy screen also? YOu know the clear plastic that are set on computer screens so people can't read if they are not directly at a 180 +- degree angle? ** You could spray it with a clear coat for the road.... Just an idea....

This cover is almost like those plastic page magnifiers that people buy to red small print in books, they also have the rough lines on the surface. Probably buy a couple of those for a buck a piece, cut them to plate size and slide them under a clear license plate cover.

I have some fresnel lenses (page sized) I give out to the elderly; wonder if that would work if it was removable for cleaning? My big sin is just speeding (driving at my lower skill levels), so I doubt these would help me. If I'm clocked when my Mojo is workin' in low traffic scenarios, I'm just scrood.

today our citizens are becoming increasingly paranoid. 1:38 "we don't need to be treated like slaves" so get a license plate blocker? You know hiding evidence is a crime, so using this is in effect a crime, and if you did something illegal like run a red light how could someone prove you did it in a 'court of law' if you blocked your license plate? So what you really mean is 'if I'm dumb and do something intentional or not intentional I want to make it as hard a possible to be held responsible for my negligent and reckless actions'. If you 'slip through a light' and smash into a family, no problem right? Maybe you should just focus on yourself and becoming an adult who will take responsibility for all your own actions and ignore the very unlikely notion that the government is watching you. BTW plate covers are illegal in NY and probably many other states.

If you pass the stop line and proceed through the intersection when the light is red you are running the red. If you're already in an intersection and past the stop line then you're okay to clear the intersection. If somehow you can't stop in time then you're probably distracted. I'd hate to think there was a mother pushing a stroller into the path of a vehicle who's 'accidentally' running a red. Really, either you're trying to stop or your trying to beat the red even if it means you're wiling to run it.
@MarusyaPolyanova

If you are in the intersection when the light was red, you are running a red light. There is no such thing as accidentally running a red light. You either do or don't. If you do, it is all your fault every time. You were not using enough care.
@DontDentMyCarNYC

people making a left turn are often caught in the intersection when the light is red because of on-coming traffic, which is one of the reasons 'running a red' is if you haven't reached the stop line. Then again maybe it's different state to state.

I currently live in Ohio. If you wish to listen to the people issuing the ticket, then of course its your ticket. You confess to the ticket, when you pay or sign. If you challenge the ticket.Then it will be a matter of who can prove what. If your face is not in the photo. Then you didn't confess to it, then you have no ticket.

A cheap way to block cameras at night is use brighter bulbs . mine had two 5 watt bulbs and by mistake I used two 30 watt bulbs which are so bright you can barely see the plate . it really works because a cop stopped me and said he couldn't see my plate . I pleaded ignorant and said the car came like that when I bought it and he just shrugged and let me go .

****ATTENTION READERS**** You can be pulled over for obscured plates and in some areas have your car seized, which means they can search the entire vehicle down to cutting it up should you have any drugs/guns/contraband in the passenger compartment/trunk/etc at time of seizure, or that a canine finds on the spot or at the impound lot. This means that your illegal plate cover could get your car cut into pieces if the police find a single seed or flake as well as sending you bye-bye for an indeterminate amount of time as of your your sentencing. This is in addition to the strict fines and license penalties in many areas. Should you be traveling across town/city/county/parish/state lines the penalties can rise exponentially as you drive, and the police do not HAVE to pull you over immediately, they can follow you as you cross lines and have ALL municipalities ticket you. *** www.autoblog.com/2016/04/01/police-traffic-stops-obscured-license-plate/ *** Please know that this is NOT limited the the USofA, in fact the USofA is far less strict than some other countries in the world and more locally, in the Americas. Reporting Criminal Behavior in the USofA: www.usa.gov/report-crime - { Take a photograph of the plate, then of the car w/ plate and then of the car in the area you caught the offender with a description } - send/e Mail this information to your local, state motor vehicle agencies as well as this USofA federal reporting agency. In MOST (or at least many) states, ANYTHING that covers your license plate for ANY reason is illegal. Fines are as high as $500 in some places, and it is often considered a moving violation - which causes your insurance rates to go up. This violation can also require a mandatory court appearance, so plan to take a day off from work. And they take the cover for evidence, and to prevent it's further use.

yes this is illegal in australia. in fact the fine for obscuring your plates is greater than a speeding fine. sounds good but remember the cop who pulls you over may not be able to fine you on this but he may just start getting interested in the roadworthiness of your car..................

The rectangular section of my photo mask cover that bends the light and distorts the photo flash, turned "yellow" and in spite of many scrubbings and bleachings, I cannot turn it clear like it was when I first bought it 2 years ago. I believe that it turned yellow from the combination of weather, humidity, and years of exposure to direct sunlight. I also think that because of the color and texture of the rectangular plastic strip, that it cannot be made "clear" again, so I am stuck with the yellow film which is a dead give-away that that I am masking my license plate. I took the yellowed plate cover off so that I would not get stopped or ticketed by the police.

With current tech for monitoring our movements, by cell phone, license plate scanners and facial recognitions, I can see a day in the near future when you'll get a visit from the police because they'll want you to explain why you were here and there. I know, "If you aren't doing anything wrong, you shouldn't care." The sad reality is that with the complex laws that we have, we are all doing something wrong.

yep -just asking to get pulled over -had a clear plastic cover and state patrol said to remove it immediately or get a ticket for obscuring a plate number- WA . state bottom line is that if a cop can't read your license plate from all angles then it is in fact obscuring -no defence against this as driving is a privelage and not a right in all 50 states just depends on the cop -I like my privacy as well as anybody but this just opens the door for more investigating by police and raises suspicion of wrongdoing -the next questions by the cop will be do you have any weapons ?

The Law Enforcement is based on the folowing statement: "It is illegal to mount license plates frames, colored glass, plastic or any other type of covering on your license plates that alters or obscures the letters, numbers, decals or the state where the vehicle is registered, and when the registration expires.". As such, the device is illegal simply because it is a "plastic covering the license plate" (not even talking about the obfuscation aspect of it). Please, notice I am not saying one shouldn't try to avoid being tracked (in a privacy matter). What I am saying is that if a person is really concerned about being tracked, they should first think about blocking their windshields against photos (as most cameras take photos from several angles, includding from the driver) and be less concerned about the license plate. Block the license plate alone sounds to me as a basic attempt to freely "speed" and "run red lights", which by itself is stupid and shouldn't be attempted, period! Lets be realistic here: a person nowadays can be tracked by cell phone (and other devices), by face recognition, by credit-card usage, by devices in the car and even be followed in the old fashion way... That's why, IMO, this "license plate cover" is not more than a law breaker tool instead of a personal protective device.

If the infrared beam can't tag the plate a cop will stop you and ask it to be removed. The rainbow thing you were talking about would shine the beam elsewhere. If a cop is on the side of you and he sees the side he's on has changed your plate with the fog he will stop you as not readable. Even if he sees it fine front the back. It's a sketchy item to have. Roll of the dice.

In some countries, like mine this will be an expensive modification... If the police catches you or sees your car standing somewhere with that modification it will get you 1 point in the database of vehicle owners, a country wide database managed by the government (you lose your drivers licence at 8 points and have to do the drivers liense course again which will cost you about 2000 dollars). You will also get your drives license taken away for one month and get a fine of around 3000 dollars.
