Sometimes bands should do a double or triple CD in those cases. Guns n' Roses with _Use Your Illusions 1 & 2_ , Metallica with _Load & Reload_ , System of a Down with _Mesmerize & Hypnotize_ . All of these are really just the same album. Even if each disk is good, an album from a great band usually represents a distinct concept with a distinct sound and theme, so these 2 and 3 parters are still basically the same album, just with a cynical money making gimmick added to it.

Let me sum it up even easier.. Green Day hasn't written 1 single decent song since American Idiot. It could be argued that a bunch of their songs sounded similar in the early years. Its irrelevant. If the songs were good, theyd sell. Like American Idiot. Alot of early Green Day fans fell out with them on Nimrod or Warning but couldn't deny their mastery of pop punk on American Idiot. Alanis Morrisette would be another one - yeah I know everyone loves Jagged Little Pill, but it is nowhere near her best work musically. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is a fantastic album, and she just kept getting better after that. Same for Tori Amos - Under the Pink is an immeasurably better record than Little Earthquakes, but that's an inconvenient truth for most. How about Mastodon? I always considered Peter Frampton’s follow up to “Frampton Comes Alive” the biggest letdown ever, “I’m in you” while not a disaster, sure seemed that way. Gwen Stefani’s follow up to “Love, Angel,Music, Baby” deserves un-recognition as well.
@denniswilliams4789

I disagree with Frampton's follow up being any degree of disappointment. It was the same as his other four studio albums. A non issue. Frampton Comes Alive was an industry shock when it was a hit. It just kept selling. Stores ran out. Generating three hit singles, none of his previous four studio solo albums 1971-1975 had been particularly noteworthy. There were also four studio and one live album with Humble Pie during 1969-1971 before that. PF was a respected session player and worked with a wide variety of people and he had stage presence. Folks in 2022 may not realize that bands released a lot more product back then. Frampton Comes Alive was essentially a greatest hits + album and since the live production values were excellent for the time and sales had been minimal for the original releases it was new to consumers and ripe for singles and radio airplay. Unlike performers/ bands who had tremendous radio hits and single sales and then capitalized when their GH collections were released , Peter Frampton was a lessor known British name in the U.S. and his double live album featured the best he had , culled from many years of releases, and it was fresh to radio and album fans alike in 1976.

When people talk abaut ARTPOP's sales they forget to mention that physical sales in 2013 were way lower than in 2011. The way people consume music constantly changes overtime and in 2013 streaming was taking off, so context is required to mesure the success of an album/era. After all Artpop was nothing less than the 4th best selling female album of 2013, just behind Prism, Beyoncé's self titled and Pure Heroine. Too soon to call it for "Scaled and Icy". It won Top Rock Album at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards and its songs still get tons of regular airplay on alternative rock stations, including SIriusXM's Alt Nation. Diehard fans may be disappointed with it, but it's not a commercial failure. I don't think they'll ever replicate the success of Blurryface. I liked Chinese Democracy; I wasn't blown away, but I wasn't totally let down either. It's a mix of really good songs, forgettable songs and one song inferior to the live bootlegs that had been heard for years (that would be "Madagascar"). Sure, I would have preferred a more stable lineup, but the album does fit with GNR's other releases. There were great musicians involved in the making of the album and everyone was credited for their hard work. The amount of albums stores stocked in advance does show how the numbers can be manipulated. It was certified Platinum by the RIAA even before its release (thank you Best Buy!), but that number isn't the number actually sold and can be further skewed by double/triple album releases. I don't know the amount sold in the US, but it likely isn't close to how many copies were available here. It has also done well internationally. And now I'm listening to the album again, so thanks!

There's another reason why Michael Jackson's album failed. It was only around for a week before Britney Spears's album "Britney" came out, and it blew "Invincible" out of the water. Ironically, her most popular single on that track, "I'm a Slave 4 You," was rumored to have been written for Michael's sister, Janet, but Janet refused to record it due to the fact that she was a black woman and the lyrics would've made it VERY tone deaf.

"Flop album" is a term only relatable in the pop or rock world. In niche music marketplaces, like blues for example, an album that sells 100,000 total units is considered a monster, because in most cases the artists themselves physically sell their albums. That genre didn't record its first platinum album until Robert Cray's "Strong Persuader," if I'm not mistaken. And of course. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton each had more than one "pure" blues album sell over a million units. And an extreme rarity is someone like Susan Tedeschi, whose "Just Won't Burn" album went gold despite being released on the tiny New England based ToneCool label. I don't believe blues music legends such as Buddy Guy or B.B. King EVER had a platinum album in their lives. Most blues or jazz acts would kill for even a gold album.

Now Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney are usually in that platinum territory, along with newer artists like Florida-Georgia Line, Chris Stapleton and Lady A (formerly Lady Antebellum). If I'm not mistaken, the first country album certified platinum was "Hank Williams' Greatest Hits," but that had a long time to achieve those numbers because it was in print from approximately 1960 to the mid-1970s. And also, for country to be reaching those numbers, that means the music crosses genre boundaries; that is, it's selling to fans of pop, rock and R&B as well. As for hip-hop, you could classify much of that as straight up R&B because a lot of R&B performers do guest vocals on hip-hop albums and singles, so I should have included R&B in my original statement as well.

My brother worked at Sam Goody in the late 90s and someone in corporate was convinced Motley Crue's Generation Swine was going to be a massive hit. This was about a year after Metallica had their huge comeback with Load and they thought it would be more of the same. So they had all these decorations in the store and played nothing but Motley Crue for a month and had a Generation Swine launch party. That was attended by four people.

It's worth noting that when Michael Jackson's "Bad" came out, it was considered a "flop" by virtually every industry bean counter since its sales were paltry compared with "Thriller's." Sure, the album spawned a slew of hit singles but, even after a full year of release, the album's sales were barely a quarter of what "Thriller" had sold in the same time frame. (The big joke was that only "Bad" could sell 10 million copies and still be considered a flop.) Part of the initial problems for the album was the lead-off single, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" with Siedah Garrett, had no real promotion (ie, no video) while the title track had the big video production (a thematic sequel to "Beat It" with the cinematic production level of "Thriller"). By the time the album was released, the title track had been sent to radio and the video was making a splash at MTV. And the album's vinyl release was destroyed by the cassette and CD releases had the additional track of "Leave Me Alone" (which actually may have inflated the album's actual sales as people who'd bought the vinyl would end up buying a cassette or CD edition for that additional track--which cleverly had a video produced). Incidentally, "Bad" wouldn't be certified 11x platinum until 2021 ("Thriller" had received the same level of certification in its first year of release). And when "Dangerous" was released a few years later, the same thing happened. Anticipation was high but sales didn't quite live up to the hype.

Thriller's success was a double-edged sword. People expected MJ to sell that level of albums with every release after that, and when he didn't, they were considered "flops." But he was following the trajectory of every major 80s performer, Prince, Madonna, George Michael, they didn't sell nearly as many albums into the 90s and 2000s but they weren't considered flops.

Just wanna point out something: Gaga and her fans don't consider Artpop to be the 3rd album, but her 4th. The second album is The Fame Monster, an EP of 8 tracks that, instead of being released separately from her debut (The Fame in 2008) it was released in 2009 as a re-release of her debut, but The Fame Montser is a concueptal body of work on its own. It was also released in some countries separately, but the sales are always counted as one album.

Yikes. As an avid (original through Use your Illusion 1&2) fan of Guns and Roses, I GAVE UP on them after all of them left the band (save for Axl). We all knew he was an asshole and increasingly difficult to work with but after 3 years of hype over “Chinese Democracy” I lost interest. Once Slash had moved on, it was over. It’s like Jagger without Richards, Tyler without Perry. Never the same.

The more I listen to Creedence, the more convinced I am that Axl's contribution wasn't singularly original. John Fogerty popularized a vocal style that's been widely imitated from the 1960s to today.

Gaga was struggling even in the Born This Way era. She developed a ton of momentum with The Fame/Monster which is why it came charging out the gate but her ego and her art didn’t live up to the hype built from the first era. The lyrics and the production and songcraft simply weren’t there. They got even more sloppy and tired by the time Artpop dropped.

@@oneaboveall4203 it wasn’t a good album from a critical standpoint. It certainly didn’t justify her record contract. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable for some. Songs like “Manicure” and “Jewels and Drugs” were beneath an artist of her stature at that point in her career.

@@oneaboveall4203 When there’s a consensus among consumers and critics, it’s pretty fair to say this video and my original comment were correct. Gaga is a great entertainer but as songwriter she really hasn’t earned her recording contract. Most of the production was standard pop EDM of that era. It wasn’t that much of a departure from her debut sound. Her reach exceeded her grasp… I respect her for trying to be avant garde but she really doesn’t have the talent Elton or Bowie did.
