If you want a better sound for the string types, use a spare envelope and the mod matrix to send a short burst of noise into the delay line and let the delay ring out naturally rather than having the noise constantly running through it and shaping it with the amp envelope afterwards as in your example. In this case the amp envelope should be fully open so you can hear the natural decay of the delay. You can experiment with the shape of the noise burst envelope and even overdrive through another filter before heading into the comb to get various sounds.

Love your new 'series' on the Blofeld. My all time fav synth as well. You had described it exactly like I would (how it is)..

it's perfect that these have all come out recently because someone close to me is selling one for 600aud (about 400 usd probably), keyboard and all. i'm definitely gonna try to snatch it up after watching all these. thanks so much and please make more! especially loving the experimental stuff.

Hoping you do more sound design stuff with the blofeld. I have an XT but it's very similar. I'd love to see some vids using the wave envelope and modulation matrix. 👍

How did you get that patch at :50? It’s one of the big reasons I bought a blofeld and I’d really rather not try to build it from scratch myself as I can tell I have to do a lot of learning before I’ll be able to do that

Yeah I was surprised to, it sort of caught me off guard, I started off trying to make the string patch but then read in the manual that the other comb filter type can do pipe/tube "modeling"

I'm not a musician, but think this will make a great series for the channel. I know a Blofeld to some, may/may not be an ideal first synth - but it's features and price used/new here in the UK make it a great option. The quality of the vids here, and how many Blofeld's must have sold over the years, will hopefully gain it more views/sub's going forward. I recently saw a nice vid that showed a PEAK music track. It used only sounds/effects from that synth. So the Blofeld could double as a controller for that in future. Though tbh, despite almost no room to speak of, I'd prefer a full synth over a desktop design. Thanks for this.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it! I too prefer keyboard synths over desktop synths, even if I have no room lol. There's nothing like sitting in front of a synth and playing it, without having any additional cables running around.

I love this trick and use it often... my synth settings are often as follows: Timbre 1 Filter 1. Cutoff: 46/127 Resonance ^109/127 Velocity x/+|-63 Filter 2 Comb @ Cutoff - (off)0~127/127 Reso:86% Keytracking: Minute~or Max (opposite timbres +/- polarity)

Incredible machine, Waldorf should pick a newer chip a few updates and this synth would be time less , deepmind or peak cannot touch the flexibility of this synth ...I know sounds of those are much better ..BTW great tutorial, you know your stuff mate

@ Once Upon A Synth , What would be your favorite Calliope(Steam/Compressed Air) OR Pipe Organ ?

Interesting question. Depends on the genre of music I suppose. I'm partial to softer sounds so maybe calliope?

I guess this also means you would try to replicate a Vacuum Tube Synth... I find a Calliope to be a cross between String Ensemble/Flute/Organ

Thanks for the video, very interesting . You are both a good keyboard player and sound designer. I would love to see what you could do with a Prophet 12. Have you ever played one?

Thanks! No I've never played the Prophet 12, but I have a Pro 2 which is kind of similar architecture-wise. I have a bunch of sound design vids for the Pro 2 on my channel (about a year ago) if you're interested. Here's the Pro 2 playlist (which is mostly sound design tutorials but also some other more demo/music ones: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4CQ1qR5rnx4p6A

The interesting thing about the blofeld is that it is m being manufactured and sold for 14 years without any major changes, despite its shortcomings or its outdated technology (not speaking about the synthesis engine, which is still fantastic and barely matched, but rather about the CPU and DSP used). Also, there were no OS updates since 2018 and I've read somewhere that there won't be any new coming in the future, so version 1.25 would remain the final update. The hardware is pretty much maxed out and there is apparently no way to squeeze any more improvements or performance out of it. The Blofeld cannot really be developed further anyway, since the original developers are all gone by now and the software development platform is outdated / antique by today's standards as well. Current Waldorf products (excluding the Kyra, as it's been made by an external dev, Waldorf only took over manufacturing, marketing and selling) are all based on a different, modern architecture (ARM Cortex). This would usually mean entering the End-Of-Life phase for a hardware device after the software development ended. Interestingly, there are no signs of the blofeld getting discontinued soon, it's still going strong. The blofeld is one big anomaly. But one day, they'll be forced to move on. The DSP is as far as I know made by NXP (formerly Freescale, formerly Motorola) and they've already announced discontinuing their old DSPs. Therefore, one of the core components won't be available in the future. This problem also applies to the Access Virus Ti2 and we still don't know anything about its future. It's a similar mystery and anomaly like the blofeld, there weren't any new updates as well and nobody knows how the story will go on. What we can say is that the Blofeld, just like the Virus, are still being bought by people, there is still a demand, so there are no reasons to discontinue them for now, as long as they are doing well. As I said, this can't continue forever, something must happen, but there are absolutely no signs pointing at some kind of change or new developments, which is already weird in some way. There are two possible scenarios: - they will be milking the cash cow / manufacturing the blofeld unchanged as long as there is demand and there are parts available for manufacturing, followed by dropping it entirely and not delivering any equivalent follow-up, but just moving on and letting the past stay in the past, which would be a big shame to be honest. - They will be working on some kind of follow-up, based on current technology (could be derived from the Iridium engine, but made simpler and cheaper), maybe they are even working secretly on it already. There were some vague hints by the Waldorf guys already, but there were no details provided if it's related to the blofeld. The 15th anniversary of the original blofeld announcement next year would be a fitting occasion.

Wow, the karplus strong on Blofeld sounds pretty different in character to the tones you got on the DSI Pro 2. I'm still planning to sell my Blofeld (I just end up using my iPad for all the things that I thought I would use the Blofeld for), but it's good to see more resources available to this awesome synth!

99% Audulus and Gadget. I use Audulus with the modular through the ES-8 and Korg Gadget with the digitakt using the midi sequencing. But I just got cubasis, and have been exploring using the Arturia iSEM, Moog Model D, and various other apps as plug-ins within the iOS DAW.
