Well the writing is good because even before their little brother died Cruz was already feeling low. He was the cultural storyteller and his paintings represented himself, his community, and his culture but as seen at his art gallery society didn't care about the heart he put into his paintings. Just cute Mexican drawings that rich people hang in their living rooms which mentally hurts Cruz hence why he falls back on his addiction. His brother's death being the final nail in the coffin

Respect for all painters who were heartbroken over the loss of their family members, they tear out their paintings of their brothers and sisters, but when it happens, you tear out a piece of your heart taking away life from yourself, this is one way to get mental illness like depression or you could get hunger disorders like anorexia or bulimia nervosa, Cruz's pain was more like this but instead of getting mental illness or hunger disorders he was on a drug addiction, I respect all painters who felt like what Cruz did, I hope any of you guys can pull through it all, with all due respeto te quiero Peace to you all ✌✌🏽✌🏿✊🏻✊🏽✊🏿

You actually make a great point. Gave me a new understanding of this scene. How many months or years has Paco known that Cruz was an addict, even after he got released from the Corp. ? Yet I don’t think he’s ever arrested Cruz or tried to get him help, he shut him out like the rest of the family because of Juanito’s death, yet he shot Miklo twice during a robbery. I understand Cruz’s anger a lot more now. Paco claims to be doing his job as a cop by shooting Miklo but then refuses to speak to his own brother for years, not even wanting to arrest him. Paco really doesn’t accept a lot of responsibility for how worse he makes things through out the movie until the very end.

Cruz could draw a new piece whenever he wanted, but the symbolism is way beyond painting. The ripped out part of the piece is Juanito's face. The hole it leaves in the piece is similar to the hole and emptiness and void Juanito's death leaves in Cruz' life - and the life of his entire family. That's such a deep scene. A grandiose depiction of the tragic burden the death of a loved one creates in one's life, let alone such a young and super dear kid as Juanito.

Aside from Selena, La Bamba, and maybe even Mi Familia, This is pobably the most authentic Chicano movie that ever came out Hollywood that was not corny as shit. This is an interesting parallel to Juanito’s death. At Juanito’s funeral Paco didn’t even speak to Cruz, like most of the family did aside from Mano of course. That stare he gave said everything that needed to be said and Cruz understood it and walked away. Paco blamed Juanito’s death on Cruz because of his addiction influencing Juanito. Cruz, filled with guilt and regret, just accepted being ostracized and left. Years Later.. Paco shoots Miklo and even though Miklo survived, he’s been permanently changed mentally, emotionally and physically, essentially killing the Miklo we knew before, the smart, funny and slightly childish little vato to the more ruthless, cold blooded and calculating La Onda captain. Notice how Miklo also refused to speak or even look at Paco afterwards. When Paco goes to see Cruz, Cruz is upset not only because he shot Miklo but because of the simple fact if it wasn’t for Paco influencing Miklo with being in Vatos Locos and always trying to be as bad as Paco, he would have never been to jail to begin with. Remember Cruz was initially against attacking Tres Puntos in Deadman’s Alley. Cruz returns that very same stare Paco gave him. Paco then tries to defend his own actions when he’s been called out for shooting his own cousin and trying to deflect his feelings of guilt about Miklo onto Cruz about Juanito, Cruz basically tears down any arguments he could build: If you’re such a good cop and about protecting La Raza why haven’t you arrested me yet or put me in detox or rehab? Yet you shot our little cousin while he had his back turned to you after he spared your life, leading to him being sent back to prison for more than likely life without parole and forcing his leg to be amputated. And in the end, they both decide to let go of their guilt, which like Paco said, was the drive behind his addiction aside from his back pains. Paco let go of the guilt of shooting Miklo. I’d also like to add that the same way Juanito was around Cruz, Miklo was almost always around Paco, which made the guilt for each brother worse. This is just my opinion by the way, I could be completely wrong.

When Cruz cuts out the face of Juanito from the painting and gives it to Paco ("Aiiiiita, toma!!!"), that is the most moving scene in the movie to me.
@FlickFusionOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
After seeing this several times... I realized that Juanito death was his own fault because he looks at Cruzito as his hero and wants to follow him everywhere cruz goes and does what he does... The parents tried to discipline him but Juan was too stubborn and curious. Even Cruz told Juan that he can’t just walk in his studio without permission. He told Juan to practice being a Boxer, But Juanito’s stubbornness and curiosity got him killed. The moment he smoked a cigarette and took the needle, he sealed his fate... Cruz couldn’t help because he was in physical pain and use drugs to ease... Paco is powerless to protect Juan because he was still serving the marines at the time... The parents were too busy at work... in the end, Cruz had to suffer and took the blame of Juanito’s death and sins all these years. This is why his has Juan in his paintings. To keep his memory alive... But that is my theory... This scene is powerful...
@FlickFusionOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
Also. In the paintings. Wolves, demons and evil spirits are constantly eating and torturing Juan’s body and soul. It means that Juan’s soul is in hell or in the underworld for all eternity. Even in death, Juanito still wants to hang out with Cruz... Another painting is a depiction of Cruz opens his chest with a knife and reveals Juanito’s face in his heart.

@@FlickFusionOfficial also something that I didn't notice before was that in shot of Juanito lying dead on the floor he is surrounded by Cruz's Aztec and Mayan art which I think could also symbolize the death of Cruz's affinity for that part of his art which tied him to his family

As for what would Miklo do to help Juanito. IDK. If he wasn’t shot and caught. Miklo would be probably looking out for Juan or allow Him to do whatever he wants. But he has his own problems. While Cruz is injured and Paco go the Jail instead of military. Who knows? Most likely Miklo would be in hiding Mexico or on the run. Because the police will find out that Miklo killed Spider. Eventually he’ll be caught.

I havent seen this movie in years, but Juanito was a child. How can he be responsible for his own death? He doesnt know any better. Ofcourse it was cruz’ fault. He was supposed to be the role model for juanito. Stop using. And if u insist on ruining ur life with drugs, at least have the presence of mind to lock ur doors. Dont let ur little bro see what ur becoming, and expose him to that poison.
@FlickFusionOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
@@pmata814 I see your point. I understand that was also Cruz‘s fault because he exposed his drugs in open. He should have went to a room and lock his doors and it is stuff there along with chewy. I know Juanito was just a child about 13 years old. But knowing his behavior yes he didn’t know any better but if you watch the movie multiple times you can see Juanito want to be with Cruz the entire time and he does look up to him as a role model. But Cruz told Juanito that you can’t be just walk in there don’t you ever knock. Even Cruz wants his privacy. Juanito said it’s no big deal like he doesn’t care. Looking back at it now, I think they’re both at fault... IMO

That ending scene has helped me through so many difficult times, it has been one of my biggest lessons about guilt and forgiveness. When cruzito says “u need that guilt, it’s what keeps you going… hey I know bro I fed mine through a needle for 10 years” and paco breaks down bc he realizes just how much cruzito was suffering in silence and he wasn’t there for him breaks my heart every time. You know Paco is such a hypocrite because he says things a lot to Miklo and Cruz and they don't say anything. But when they say something he's like "Don't ever say that to me again I let you say that that to me once". I'm glad Cruz stood up.

Ironically, if it weren’t for Paco insinuating a fight with Spider, Cruz wouldn’t have had a heroin addiction, Miklo wouldn’t have ended up in prison and his little brother would have still been alive.

Growing up with 50/50 family being addicts and criminals versus the rest of us who have our shit together, this is definitely a moving scene. I’ve seen that look in Cruzito’s eyes at 1:44 a hundred times, brilliant acting.

All of what happened was Paco's fault cause of wanting revenge cause of what 3 puntos did to cruzito and if he would've planned it another way to seek revenge none of that would've happened.

It’s the little detail that gets me every time “he’s my carnalito too!” instead of he was! Cruz always has Juanito with him! Just like the rest of his family only thing is he had to deal with it all on his own.

This movie is incredibly underrated. The transformations of the characters is so extreme, even a minor character like Chuey's total physical change after years on heroin.

This is a powerful scene indeed.. I keep coming to it once in while... Because it wasn't acting. It was true emotions from these MEN. What an outstanding piece of scene.
