Aria, the speech delivered by Quint about the USS Indianapolis tragedy is a true story, an actual historical fact. It really happened! His story relating the incident is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he was determined to personally secure the bounty and reward for killing the shark, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge (or perhaps redemption) for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by destroying the man-eating shark himself…

I remember seeing this movie in the theater when it came out in 1975. This movie shook virtually everyone all across the country, huge numbers of people stopped going in the ocean because of this movie! It took quite q long time to get over the fear for some people, years for some. Adding to the already heighten fear, a study came out that stating that the majority of shark attacks occur in 3 feet of water! Just when everyone was getting more comfortably going in the ocean, Jaws II came out!

G&D was butchered by its producer and co-star Michael Douglas. His part was supposed to be for Sean Connery (the age gap between the two leafs would have made the father/son kind if relationship more plausible) but when he red the script Douglas forced the director to give him the part. THEN he changed the editing to have him in more scenes, cutting most of the story where he wasn't in (causing many continuity errors along the way), that's how the great 2h30 dream project of the director became a slightly above average 1h45 adventure/thriller. Worst of all, Douglas made sure the film with the deleted scenes was "lost" to avoid any future director's cut that might prove he was wrong... and bruise is little ego.

That head scene (9.45) is one of the most iconic jump scares in history. Snuck in @15yo with a friend to watch half empty matinée & us two bold lads sat at back row in front of a passageway. Usherette (so called back in the day) was leaning on the partition wall behind us & got engrossed in the movie. John Williams' brilliant score which also shaped it into it's forever famous form. When the head popped out she screamed right into our ears & her torch went flying to smash into bits. We jumped so hard & that's as close as I ever want to get to evacuating my bowels! I think we were both traumatised & her screaming behind us brought the fear of death to within reach. She's probably still in therapy today & we figured it must have been her first day, at least at this movie. A brilliant bestseller on a topic that was only known, at the time, to a few fisherman, Marine scholars & victims - brilliantly directed by the up & coming legendary director.

Now we track Great Whites in real time off the coast of Massachusetts, I served there in the Army several years later, fished off of the coast, but never swam in anything that I couldn't see the bottom and the sticky things that had no slip in the bathtub. Live in Indiana now, we haven't had a shark attack in 2 Million years!

In 2002 Benchley wrote an informative non-fiction book called "Shark Trouble" which described the importance of sharks and their value to the ecology of the sea, and to us because of their roles as apex predators in the food chain (though many sharks are small and harmless and are not apex predators). It somewhat redeemed his writing of "Jaws" and eased his guilt about what he felt was his part in the over-killing of sharks. Every year a few dozen people may be killed or wounded by sharks, but people have killed thousands of times more sharks than sharks have killed us. But in the last few years shark attacks have been getting more frequent, and I wonder if it is a combination of our ever-rising population which results in more and more people getting into the water and climate change affecting the normal availability of shark prey so that they are more inclined to experiment on eating people.

Jaws was inspired by a series of fatal shark attacks that took place along the Jersey shore in July of 1916. Four people were killed by a great white shark including an 11 year old boy who was playing in a creek 16 miles inland (yes, the shark traveled upriver 16 miles, and killed someone). A fifth victim was attacked in the creek, but survived his injuries.

A lot of reactors to this movie always ask why people don’t swim away and get out of the water. You need to understand shark behaviour. Hooper explained that the reason the shark was coming to the beach was because there was a lot of movement in the water caused by the swimmers and it knows there is food in the water. The girl, the dog, Alex and the boatman were causing a lot of movement which attracted the shark. Michael went into shock thus didn’t move and that probably saved his life. Might sound weird but you actually can drown a shark. The barrels were to drag the shark down to stop the water from passing over its gills and extracting oxygen from the water. However they all underestimated the size of the beast and how smart it was. You can also attach a rope to the tail and drag it backwards to suffocate it.

If you want to watch a comedy, I'd suggest watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Movies are made for various reasons and one of the most basic reasons is to get an emotional response out of the viewing audience, and if killing off a good character is one way to do this, then that's why they do it. The character Quint, (the boat captain), was a likable character that takes time to discover and then killing him off pays dividends for the movie making business and possible future franchise.

@@TheRivrPrncess Not really. The single minded focus toward terrorizing humans isn't a thing. Great white sharks don't like the taste of people, but still can kill them accidentally (biting them to "test" their edibility, then having the victim bleed to death). I don't think there has ever been a shark who jumped up and crashed down on the transom of a boat so as to eat people on board the boat like this shark did, again the single-minded focus on killing/eating people is fiction. The attack in the shark cage... also not typical great white behavior.

Yeah after I saw this in theaters we went to the Pacific Ocean and i only went in up to my knees. Lifeguards had it easy that summer as they said no one went in. I go in the ocean today but not beyond the waves. Great whites are huge. They’re off the Pacific Ocean a lot as there are lots of seals out there and they’re showing up off Massachusetts and New York now which is a little more unusual. They can be huge. I wouldn’t surf that’s for sure. Attacks are rare but still….this movie scared me a lot.

As a kid in Australia l didn't think the movie was over when Roy blew up Jaws. I knew that all those pieces and blood would attract other sharks from miles away and they'd be in a feeding frenzy.

If you want laugh out loud comedy, may I suggest anything that Mel Brooks had a hand in. Two of my favorites are Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles.

Spielberg's debut film a few years prior to this, was a mean little ditty and absolute classic called "DUEL." The shark in this was in that a filthy nasty Big Rig chasing a guy out on the desolate highway.

I'd classify it as a "thriller" rather than "horror" movie.

I mean, just because it has blood and death, it exactly qualify as horror. I mean, war movies has blood and death, action movies have blood and death.

Jaws was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies or tv were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a scary surprise to a lot of people that while the shark in the movie at 25 feet long was bigger than the record it wasn't much bigger. And fisherman and surfers said that they had seen them that big.

Survivors of the Indianapolis were shocked but honored that their story made it into the film. Most hadn't even told their families of the incident

Robert Shaw was an amazing actor. No wonder you didn't like him. That was his job. Then he had his monolog. Changed your view a bit. Great review. Lived through this movie as a child at the time. Was afraid to swim in our pool let alone the ocean(Lived in San Diego, at the beach and bay every weekend) . Powerful cinema.

I saw Jaws when it first came out. Way more intense than I anticipated! For a comedy, I'd recommend Groundhog Day or When Harry Met Sally. Both are very funny and surprisingly full of heart.

Another one I'm late to lol I highly recommend the book version of Jaws. It gives greater story detail and even gives the shark its own point of views.

Jaws was intended to be very different from what was released. Initially the shark was much more visible throughout the film but the anamtronic shark "Bruce" repeatedly broke down whenever it was placed in the water so the entire film had to be reworked and many of the scenes reimagined.

Bit of an exaggerated myth that. Far more of the shark was supposed to be seen during the ocean hunt segment, but not the beach scenes. The shark was kept hidden by design. Those scenes were filmed May to beginning of July 1974. Bruce was never scheduled to be used for any scenes until mid July. It wasn't until September that Bruce finally worked properly.

I should add that the first shark incident scene filmed was actually the pier/pot roast scene. This was filmed in May, and was filmed purposely to keep the shark hidden. So even though that was the first shark incident filmed, it was the third shark incident in the story. It would make no sense to plan to show the shark during the first two incidents then regress to completely hiding it for the third incident.

That's a myth. The script never called for showing the shark early.

For as bad as Mayor Vaughn seems, he's in an unenviable position. Amity Island's council won't support Brody, the local businesspeople want the beaches open, etc. Everyone is pushing to keep tourists coming in, and for good reason. Amity Island's primary income is summer tourism; the town depends on that money for the whole year. Vaughn denies that there's a problem in large part because the island can't afford to have one. In fact, the sequel was supposed to show that Amity Island was still having serious financial problems from the loss of tourists years later. The opening of a Holiday Inn at the beginning of the film was the first new investment in the island's tourism. That part wound up not being included in the final film, as well a scene showing that Vaughn was the only person left on the council who supported Brody.

When I was a little kid I’d think twice before jumping in a swimming pool after just seeing commercials about Jaws movies. Yes, I like your rule: No kids and no dogs. Hahaha! Yes, you still need to learn to swim. When you have kids one day, you’ll need to teach them to swim too so you don’t ever need to worry they accidentally drown because they couldn’t swim. My suggestion for you: “Almost Famous” (2000). 😉👍
