This has been a long time coming! Bloom filters by Mr Bloom - it’s too perfect 😅 Snapped up the 82mm 1/8 and 1/4 filters. As someone who shoots at night in Tokyo frequently, I can’t emphasize how much of a difference diffusion filters make. Can’t wait to try them mate and congrats 🍻

I nabbed one of the early ones at a recent trade show and I've been really liking the effect of it. I went with the 1/4 because my primary use is inside my office and that seems like the right strength for that room. The added bling is a welcome improvement to my dull black camera setup 😄 Nice bonus being made in Wales too.

I'm sold. Purchased 1/8th for 82mm. Many years ago when I worked at a production house (I was an editor) our commercial directors shooting 35mm could be found in upmarket clothing stores looking through stretched silk stockings to make their own diffusion filters because they didn't like the Tiffen filters then available to them.
@chriscoveries

I was expecting absurd branded costs. But $140 USD for the 82mm? $87.5 for 49mm? That's doable. But then I see the factory is in the UK?!? WOW. sold

@jaredpalick
Жыл бұрын
@Philip, have you been able to compare these to the "Black Pro Mist" variety of diffusion? I'd be curious to know if these have comparable strength values when compared directly to other diffusion brands. We have 1/8 strength BPM filters that live on all our lenses for television production here in Hollywood, but I like the idea of having the added "gold warmth" as an option for our outdoor filming. I particularly loved the highlight contrast and subtle warm tinting in the sky shots you took. Thanks for the professional and thorough insights in your review. Cheers
@philipbloom
Жыл бұрын
Hi Jared, the strengths are indeed comparable. Much less loss of contrast. My filters aren’t just for outdoor but for indoor, night etc. The subtle warm halation is lovely and those good particles help maintain the contrast more.

I tried million ways to reproduce diffusion effect in post, and it looks like you cannot fully make the same look. DaVinci's diffusion+halation can make a pretty good job if you will spend a bit of time with tuning it. But recently i saw the Scatter plugin for DaVinci. To my eyes they getting pretty close to the look of real diffusion filters

I know you've been talking to Michael Andrews lately about filters (VNDs especially) and it could be too much of an ask, but I'd love to see a set of your new filters compatible with his Maven magnetic mount (which would basically automatically be compatible with Kase's mount, too). It would be awesome to use your filters as a supplement to his system as I've recently consolidated all my various filters over to just using his so now I can't stack screw on filters anymore 😆. Regardless, congrats on the release! These do really look so good! And I'm surprised how relatively affordable they are!

Matte box filters are being considered. As I said in the video as I don’t use them that’s why I wanted circular. I’ve a video on diffusion filters from 2 or 3 years ago if you want to see others. I didn’t want to make this a Bloom Gold Vs Others video as it would be massively too long. I wanted to showcase my filters as much as possible. Most people who have used diffusion filters know what to look for I would guess. I will find that link for you.
So when they manufacture these, are they using Vaseline or hairspray? I need to invent a diffuser to stick to my face. Or my bathroom mirror…🤔

The 1/2 then yes, as that’s much more like an effect filter. The 1/4 and 1/8 especially have such a beautiful and subtle effect depending on the lens/ subject/ lighting as I said and showed in the video. I don’t love obvious diffusion like you mentioned. The 1/2 is there for people who want more but I said no the 1 strength.

Since you are an ambassador for Sony, they need to create a Picture Profile blessed by you. Nobody understands color science as well as you do. You could earn a small royalty on each camera with it. Or perhaps Sony allows users to pay extra for a Picture Profile created by somebody like you and you receive part of the profits. I guarantee you it would be popular. Sony, I hope you’re listening!
