It's made me smile that the final scene ends with Richard laughing and saying Cheers! - Remember him on tv all the time when I was just kid. Having being widowed recently myself in similar scenario with young children.. its comforting to have special things to remember your loved ones by and this must be a really nice one of those things for his family to watch.

No matter how short a life "fate" deals you, it's what you do with the time that counts. There are very few people in the world that accomplish many goals of this proportion, regardless of profession; certainly not in just a few, short, thirty-one years. He'd be proud of the daughters he left behind, and I'd like to think he and Ronnie Barker are having a fair firkin's worth of laughs at our expense............. Genuine pleasures in life are few; embrace them while you can, because the world is ugly these days........

Richard did have a rare congenital heart problem which 40 years ago would have been impossible to detect so it's not fair to blame doctors, even now people die with problems that only show up in a post mortem..

3:30 onwards he looks so ill. The other cast members said they were concerned because he was so tired and he became irritable which was so unlike him. What is odd though is that this was filmed in November/December 1978 but the Porridge movie was filmed in January 1979 and nobody from that cast noticed he looked ill at all? He was even playing football and running in that Porridge movie. There was a strike at the BBC so the 6th and final episode of Bloomers was meant to be filmed in March, obviously Richard died the day before that was meant to be filmed. Must have been a shock for the studio audience who had planned to go.

Three years earlier, Declan Mulholland, (O'Shaughnessy), portrayed Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars. His performance perhaps left something to be desired, and there were technical problems with the footage; his scene was cut and the part was eventually rewritten as an alien. George Lucas later claimed that Mulholland was intended to act as a placeholder for an alien, created with special effects. This seems unlikely given that a) Mulholland was in full costume and b) due to the way in which the scene was filmed, it would have been impossible to achieve this effect with 1970s technology.

Yes, apparently his 'Bloomers' co-star David Swift said Richard got 'greyer and greyer looking' as the filming went on. He was obviously in serious trouble by now - during recording of the first episode, he told his co-star Anna Calder-Marshall he had had some kind of blackout and suffered dizzy spells. This concerned him enough to see a doctor, but all the doctor diagnosed was slightly high cholesterol and an overactive stomach lining. Very frustrating that Richard did the right thing and sought a medical opinion, yet his heart defect was not picked up. Presumably today proper tests would have been done on his heart, and surgery undertaken? His condition deteriorated in the following weeks and towards the end of filming he was complaining of pains in his arms, a classic symptom of heart problems. On what was to be his last day of filming, he gave Anna Calder-Marshall a lift home and to her surprise, confided his fear of dying, and of being alone in the house. Sadly prophetic, as that's exactly what happened. Richard's wife actress Judy Loe was in hospital having a procedure to help them conceive another child, and their 5 year old daughter Kate was staying with friends. Arriving home late on the evening of Sunday 18th March to his home in Sunningdale, Berkshire, he phoned friends and repeated he was suffering pains in his arms and chest, but was in good humour and joked about it. When he did not arrive at rehearsals for the sixth and final episode of 'Bloomers' the next morning a member of the production team rang the house, and the phone was answered by a family friend. She had been staying at the house to help take care of Kate but was not there the previous night. she said Richard was still sleeping and left the phone to wake him up. When she returned she said she could not wake him and was advised to call a doctor.Shortly after it was confirmed he had died during the night of a massive heart attack. A post mortem confirmed he had a congenital heart defect. Tragic beyond words.

Yes so did I but the Nurses and medical staff were wonderful to me and got me better again. I am convinced that if the doctors had discovered Richard's heart defect he would still be alive now. No one knows for certain but it must have been a possibility.

Richard had a congenital heart defect which would have been almost impossible to detect at the time, I understand people's frustration but it's really not fair to blame the doctors sadly science and medicine wasn't advanced as it is today & it's worth remembering that even today people die from heart & other congenital conditions that haven't been diagnosed or detected until postmortem. Such a talented man gone far far too early RIP Richard

@@EM-yk1dw possibly but it's hard to know without knowing what the defect was. In 1979 they had bypass surgery but the long term success rate would not be what it is today

@glamdolly30

I agree, it really is dreadfully unfunny - hasn't stood the test of time at all and just reminds you how fortunate it was that the huge talent of Richard Beckinsale was partnered with not one, but two of the best TV sitcoms ever written - Rising Damp and Porridge. Without those two giant shows we may never have known what a massive talent Richard was.

+mk2dubster this is an excerpt from "Wiki", regarding Bloomers' 6th & final episode: "... At the time of his death, Beckinsale had almost completed Bloomers; writer James Saunders's original script, reveals that Beckinsale was due to attend the sixth & last rehearsal for the final episode of the series on the day he died, with the show to be recorded the following day ..." So, based on this, am I the only one thinking it's possible footage of blooper/practice tapes or perhaps someone has a copy of the sixth episode rehearsal - (unedited of course) ... Even though it's unfinished, I woukd love to view it or own a copy - #everything #Beckinsale😘
