You're 100% right about the bloomfield potentially making more sense with humbuckers. I got one when I just had a strat and kinda felt like I was swimming against the current to find a tone that made sense for my style. Then I got a PRS DGT and suddenly the amp made so much more sense.

Right! I struggled a bit with it for a while. I think for me it is that it isn’t that recognisable single coil sound, like a fender/classic reverb. But the hums or even p90s or hotter tele pickups really push it better!

He said it right at the beginning. The 100 watt BD uses 6L6 power tubes and is bound to be less interesting at lower volumes. The 40 watt CRS uses 6V6 power tubes and is bound to sound better at lower volumes... Use them both in stereo.

Fantastic comparison and analysis. Ultimately I feel that the Bloomfield offers a bit more of a unique sound, but also is quite versatile. The EQ shift switches really can get you closer to that glassy Fender sound. I've got a '66 Tele and while the Bloomfield is great for humbuckers, it seems made for the Tele. With a Strat on the clean channel, I counter-logically flip the highs boost on and push quite a bit of presence. This brings it back to that comfy familiar place, and really doesn't ice pick. A little roll off at the guitar is enough to manage things. On the flip side, pushing the mids and letting the gain side flex a bit is just amazing for a Strat - and pushes it right through a mix with lower gain than usually needed.

Thanks James! I have been trying for the longest to decide which two-rock would be best for me. In the end I decided on the CRS instead of the Bloomfield Drive; and your comments were very helpful to me. For me the the gain stages in the CRS in addition to making incredible clean tones; are also very desirable in creating WONDERFUL sounds with pedals. If you love blackface sounds (and those derived from said fenders) this is one amp you should seriously consider. Check out this TPS video around 8:19 to hear one example of what a CRS can do with pedals: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z5h7r3-lgGZoqo4 ... enjoy!

Really insightful video, James. I tend to gravitate towards Fender style amps and, on its own, I did prefer the CRS. However, the Bloomfield drive demonstrates the importance of a more neutral amp if you want it to work with a range of pedals. If I was in the market for a Two Rock, it'd be the latter I'd buy for that reason. Keep up the great work. :-)

Another sweet comparison video James thank you. When my 100w CRS arrived earlier this year, both the head and 2x12 cab were messed up in transit. I finally have another CRS and 2x12 cabinet together and they are glorious for the reasons you mention in this video. I'm using it with a Fryette PS100 and it does a great job retaining original character when you want to attenuate the volume. Much better than my 100w Ironman ii. Unfortunately it looks like my Bloomfield order won't be fulfilled until after I've moved back to blighty. But this video has got me thinking about all the possibilities and particular characteristics I can look forward to when I stack the heads through the Mesa HeadTrack. Cheers

Well done for making this. Pedal-wise, I thought the green side of the Protein sounded great through the BD and not great through the CRS. Blue side great with both. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that - currently owning both and various copies/homages - I’m more of an ODR person than a Klon person. To my surprise, as someone who generally likes the same stuff as Mick, I liked the Bloomfield more overall. I have a Trad Clean and love it (as I write, have it wet/dry with a Morgan JS12, Benson Ge preamp > Shanks > Magma57, and a Les Paul). but you have whetted my appetite for the Bloomfield. It’s a niche market but a nice one. Thanks again for putting this video together, with all the owner info.

I was attracted to them when a reviewer had mentioned that they are so responsive to touch and since i'm coming from an acoustic background, this really attracted me. Having just listened to Bill Frisell for half n hour (who i hadn’t heard of before) i’d say that something overly characterful like the classic reverb might get in your way. In its most simplistic form I prefer the CRS with any kind of push from the amp or pedal. I however definitely prefer the BD clean channel tone. What a quandary? The thing that was very interesting to my ear was how good they BOTH sounded with the LP irrespective of clean or gain. Tbh if you are getting this sort of amp, even for clean i would recommend a great attenuator. The 6l6 bigger amp tends to sound fatter and 6v6 thinner at lower volume - if you use an attenuator it won’t matter so much as you can dial it in well. I get what you're saying! I don't like 'blingy' guitars for a start and am a total Fender fanboy ;-) I have eight different Fender models, nothing high end, but love em all. Got all the tones covered! But once a year I convince myself I need a set-neck guitar with humbuckers (i.e. PRS, LP, 335) and inevitably then trade it in for another Fender after not liking a flatter fingerboard radius and comparative lack of clarity. I even upgraded a 335 with Montys PAFs and still couldn't bond with it. Never considered a Ricky. Saw this 360 in white (now yellow, with a wonderful crazed finish!) with black hardware. Totally changes the look! I'd heard that the narrow necks are an issue for some, but I find it as playable as a Fender, and it has more sustain and warmth than the 335, the bite of a Tele, jangle of a Jag and that 'vocal' tone of a Strat. I'm smitten! I think the neck pickups in the 80s models were higher gain than more recent models, but it's a blues beast!

I also have many friends who aren't major earners but gig on the side so they can buy nice gear like this. I'm not sure where this idea comes from that people have to be very wealthy to afford these amps, or other small production gear, if they live in a part of the world where it is realistic. There are many hobbies which I see all sorts of normal working guys do that cost loads more - car racing, watch collecting etc. If I assume you are somewhere that makes it a lot more difficult, then ok, that's understandable that you have that view. But, in the UK, western and northern Europe, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and many other places, luckily if you are careful with your disposable income then it is not quite so impossible.

Two Rocks are terrible amplification machines. They make your guitfiddle sound far too fine.
